The Church of St Mary the Virgin Enville,

From Reverend Deborah Walton July and August I am just approaching the end of my second year with you. I was ordained deacon on 1 July 2017, and we moved to Enville about a week later – how time flies!

This season of new beginnings at the end of June and beginning of July continues for many who are ordained at this time of year. It was with great joy that Revd Nicki Caines, our Benefice OLM Curate, was ordained priest at St Michael’s Church in Lichfield on Saturday 22 June, having been ordained deacon at Lichfield Cathedral last July. Do pray for her as she enters this new season in her life and ministry. We are very much looking forward to her celebrating her first Holy Communion at St Mary’s this summer.

We also look forward to celebrating new beginnings for our couples getting married and those being baptised in July and August. Congratulations to you all!

Since the last edition of our magazine we have set up a St Mary’s website – another new beginning this summer! Please do take a look, as the site is still a work in progress, we would really welcome your feedback and ideas. Do let us have any photographs of St Mary’s that we could include. In due course we will be looking for a willing volunteer who will be able to keep the site up to date, if you’d like to do this please let me (or one of the Churchwardens) know. The website address is: https://stmarysenville.wordpress.com

This season of new summertime beginnings puts me in mind of a few verses from Song of Solomon (chapter 2 verses 10-12) which has become very popular as a Scripture reading at weddings: “My beloved speaks and says to me: ‘Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away; for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the is heard in our land.”

I hope and pray that for each one of us these next two months will be a time of singing with perhaps a little less rain than we have seen in June!

From Lynn Other, Pastoral Care Co-Ordinator for Enville:-

Whilst away in Alaska recently, my thoughts constantly turned to the greatness of our God, his abundant provision and the perfection and balance of Nature. The stunning scenery and vast areas of unspoilt wilderness left me speechless with awe.

You can’t go anywhere in Alaska without hearing talk about salmon. In fact the whole region seems to hold its breath, waiting for the salmon to arrive with their run starting in the middle of July and lasting until September. Small, quite isolated communities have sprung up around the arrival of the salmon, with canning factories on the shores of pristine rivers overlooked by towering mountains and wildlife such as bears, whales, bald eagles slowly making their way to the rivers, checking daily whether their precious food has arrived.

What struck me was how like Christian life the life of the salmon is. They live an extraordinary life and there’s much that isn’t understood about them. At a certain point in a salmon’s life, tiny metal shards in its brain activate and from that moment on its only purpose is to return home to spawn in the lake or river where its’ life began. Then it will die.

When we hear the call of God, something deep in our souls activates and responds and we fix our eyes on the goal of reaching our heavenly home and leaving this world. There are many hurdles to overcome. We, like the salmon, must swim against the flow of life in the world, often confounding the world as to why we do it. The fish must struggle constantly between seeking fresher water where its work will end on reproducing and the exhaustion from life’s struggles and the search itself. They swim up rivers, leap up waterfalls and defy odds stacked against them to reach home. Maybe that sounds familiar?

Satan, just like a bear or an eagle, is always fishing along the way. He is the crafty fisherman with enticing lures, shining in the sun. Just as the salmon must face these risks and challenges, so must we. It is at the headwaters where the freshest water runs fast and shallow, the places where the greatest risks are, that the greatest growth takes place.

Are we prepared to swim against the flow in the fast and shallow waters, face the risks, in order to spawn new Christians? This is what we are called to do, it is our God given purpose in the cycle of our life. Let’s keep swimming!

TRYSULL DEANERY

On Thursday the 13th June Trysull Deanery had their summer meeting at St Mary’s Church Enville. It was the last meeting for Maureen Hobbs’ as she was retiring as Dean of Trysul, so we laid on an extremely good spread with cake for her. Forty people attended including the Archdeacon of Stoke- on-Trent making it an enjoyable and successful evening. My big thank you to Sue Morley, Pat Barron, Jan Harris, Rev Debs and Eileen Jones for providing such beautiful food. I know Maureen was very pleased.

Reverend Julia, from church, attended the meeting and was introduced to us as the replacement for Maureen and she was made welcome.

Many thanks again. Lin Hingley.

NEW CHURCH WARDEN.

I am delighted to announce that Richard Barron has been sworn in as a Church Warden of St. Mary’s, Enville. He is ably supported by his wife Pat and is already proving to be a most sensitive and thoughtful Church Warden who will bring his many skills to bear for the well being and future of St. Mary’s Church.

Richard and Pat live in Grassmere Drive, Norton, and can be contacted on 01384 832530.

Stephen Morley. Why is fund raising so important?

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is responsible for the financial affairs of the church. Church finances and fund raising are discussed at every PCC meeting throughout the year. At the last PCC meeting on the 3rd June, the PCC decided that more information should be given about the challenges it faces in ensuring that our church is able to discharge its financial responsibilities.

Income, mainly, comes from Church collections, the Gift Aid Scheme, donations and fund-raising events. Besides the usual local Church expenditure such as heating and lighting and insurance, which is £5,000 and £2,500 per annum respectively, the biggest element of annual expenditure is the payment of the Parish Share which is the amount of money requested, on an annual basis, to cover the cost of Mission and Ministry across the Diocese of Lichfield which is, primarily, the cost of clergy. The Parish Share is paid into the diocesan Common Fund which, in turn, covers the cost of a priest including monthly stipend, housing costs, clergy training and pension contributions. The diocese also provides a wide range of services for parishes and clergy.

The Parish Share for Enville for 2019 is £18,274 which has been adjusted down for the year from £21,650 due to the absence of a Rector. We have so far paid £4,000 leaving a balance of £14,274. The Diocese has invited Enville to pay the remaining Parish Share by monthly instalments, but we are not in a position, currently, to put a monthly direct debit payment in place!

Needless to say, St Mary’s income is invariably insufficient to cover its costs and Parish Share. This is why fund-raising is so important to the ongoing well- being and availability of our Church. Whilst we have always been able to meet our financial obligations in the past, it has often been as a result of the hard work that people have put in to raise funds by organising events throughout the year.

It is, perhaps, a timely reminder that we have a standing order payment scheme in place enabling those who choose to support the work of St Mary’s to do so by setting up a standing order for either a weekly, monthly or annual payment direct to the Church’s bank account. Please contact one of the Wardens for further information about setting up a standing order payment. We would be delighted for people to come forward to help with ideas for fund- raising, organising an event or helping others to stage an event.

If anyone is interested in supporting our Church in any element of funding raising, then please contact one of the Church Wardens whose contact details are below.

DISCOVER LICHFIELD CATHEDRAL

Now is a great time to come and visit your Cathedral at Lichfield. There is so much going on that there is not enough space in this short article to tell you all. Cathedrals in Britain are booming. The latest Church of statistics for 2018 confirms that cathedral services are continuing a trend begun 20 years ago and attracting greater numbers of people every year. Cathedral congregations are larger than at any time since the millennium. But this is only part of the success story. Many more visitors come to Lichfield and other cathedrals attracted by an ever-widening range of liturgies, exhibitions, theological presentations and attractions. The national statistics of Cathedral visitors show that they number 10-11 million averaged over the last 5 years. The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has commented very favourably on the Cathedral’s programme of events and exhibitions and called them imaginative. Add to this the recent announcement that Lichfield Cathedral volunteers have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and you will see that your Cathedral is a thriving and vibrant place attracting 155,000 visitors annually.

This year 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the first Moon Landing and so the theme in the Cathedral is “Journeys: Through Space, Light and Time”, with services, concerts and special events. The first Moon Landing captured the world’s attention and imagination, opening up new perspectives on space and how we see Earth in the vast expanse of the universe. This summer from July to September “One Small Step” created by Peter Walker, the Cathedral’s Artist-in-Residence will transform the Cathedral floor into a lunar landscape, giving you the opportunity to walk on the Moon and watch the galaxies emerge above you while standing there. The theme of The Great Exhibition 2019 in August is “Space: God, the Universe and Everything”. This will take you on a journey through stunning sound, light and art installations revealing the Universe, Space and Creation. It is an experience not to be missed. Tickets are available at www.lichfield-cathedral.org/space
