Annual Report 2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 September 1, 2011 – August 31, 2012 IN-SCHOOL MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA) expanded its in-school music programs for underserved student populations with the mission to provide and promote the integration of music into the curricula of disadvantaged schools in order to enhance students' academic performance and creative and general development. Over 4,500 students received free yearlong music instruction during the school day in the following partner schools: Castelar Elementary, El Dorado Elementary, Foster Elementary, Madison Elementary, Norwood Elementary, Providencia Elementary, Rio Vista Elementary, St. Ignatius, St. Sebastian, and West Hollywood Elementary Schools. ETM-LA provided 45-min weekly music classes at each partner school on a yearlong basis with a variety of music disciplines– including violin, cello, guitar, recorder, general music, and chorus. The programs at each school were tailored to meet the needs of each population based on the vision of the Principal with guidance from ETM-LA. Students at all partner schools performed in two concerts to showcase their musical learning in the Fall and Spring semesters. To support the quality of instruction in the classroom and teaching artists’ ability to educate children, ETM-LA provided ongoing mentorship and evaluation of its music teachers by multiple staff (Field Supervisor, Program Coordinators, and Executive Director). In September 2012, ETM-LA held its weeklong intensive Summer Training Institute for its new and returning music teachers and guest teaching artists from other arts organizations. The institute focused on topics including Lesson Planning, Classroom Management, Integration, Creative Strategies, Assessment of Student Learning, Concert Preparation and Presentation, Singing Technique, Strings Methods, Teaching Copyright, and Pedagogy (Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, Suzuki, et al.). ETM-LA was grateful to have experts in the music education fields facilitate including Program Director Ryan Rowles, Composer Brendan McMullin, Musician Richard Scher, and Vocal Coach Karen Tobey. ETM-LA held additional workshops throughout the year on relevant topics such as Working with Student Populations with Special Needs, Music Technology, Student Assessment, and Songwriting and Arranging, and presented a joint training with USC Thornton School of Music Outreach and the Music Center, entitled Teaching Artist Dialogues. Professional development for academic teachers was held throughout the year through their participation in the music classes and learning alongside their students. By joining the music learning, teachers explore and develop: • Thinking skills and content areas common to music and other academic subjects that can support learning in a range of areas, • Value of teaching music inside and outside the academic classroom, and • Coordination of instruction to reinforce the identified skills and content. Recent Program Accomplishments: • January 2012 - ETM-LA students at Norwood Elementary performed for the President of the University of Southern California, Dr. C.L. Max Nikias, during his visit to the school. • February 2012 - ETM-LA held its third annual Principals’ Conference to provide leadership guidance from ETM-LA and sharing of best practices. The conference served as a leadership workshop where principals and school administrators of partner schools shared strategies in building a rewarding, self-sustaining music program in their schools. • March 2012 - Victoria Lanier joined state leaders and educators in San Diego for the California Arts Council’s Joint Arts Education Task Force in creating the next Blueprint for the Arts • March 2012 – ETM-LA students from Providencia Elementary were featured in the National Association for Music releases the IQ of the heart and not just the mind. ETM-LA and LA’s Best of the Mayor’s Office continued programming afterschool as further enrichment to provide 6 hours of musical training and orchestra at Castelar (60 students) and El Dorado (40 students) Elementary Schools. With USC Thornton Outreach and the USC Neighborhood Outreach Initiative, ETM-LA expanded its strings program at the Norwood Elementary School. ETM-LA continues its partnerships with YOLA (LA Philharmonic’s Youth Orchestra Los Angeles initiative), USC Thornton School of Music Outreach, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and other arts organizations to provide additional opportunities. In October 2011, we celebrated our 6th Year Anniversary with a Benefit Gala at the House of Blues featuring performances by Ed Helms (TV’s The Office) and his bluegrass band, the Lonesome Trio, and Michael Bearden (former Music Director for Michael Jackson) and Solace, along with Education Through Music-LA music students. In January 2012, our Providencia Elementary School students were treated to a visit by Academy Award-Winning Michael Giacchino to learn about the world of film-composing, and in May 2012, received a concert by Ed Helms and the Lonesome Trio. In the Spring 2012, 150 students from all 10 partner schools came together to perform at ETM-LA’s inaugural Music Unites the World Festival. ETM-LA has been fortunate to receive the support of many local artists and groups who host concerts and events to raise awareness for ETM-LA and its mission. Such events have included: • December 2011 – My Morning Jacket performed at the Gibson Ampitheater to benefit ETM-LA’s programs • April 2012 – Actresses Jane Kaczmarek and Kate Flannery (with The Lampshades) and Tim Davies’ Big Band presented a benefit event at The Raymond in Pasadena • May 2012 – Ed Helms performed at the LA Bluegrass Festival, inviting listeners to get involved and learn about ETM-LA’s programs • May 2012 – Got Music? featuring John Debney, Lisbeth Scott, Randy Spendlove, Nickelodeon’s Leon Thomas III performing with ETM-LA students • Music That Matters fundraiser, hosted by UCLA Extension Music Marketing students • John West and Mark Ballas, Dancing with the Stars These partnerships with community members expand the reach and depth of ETM-LA’s mission so more children’s lives can be positively impacted by music. ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS & PLANS FOR THE FUTURE ETM-LA welcomed four new board members and increased its music teacher staff to serve more partner schools. In addition, ETM-LA added two new partner schools: Foster Elementary in Compton and Providencia Elementary in Burbank. This broadened our reach from two to four school districts, as we now have partnerships with schools in Los Angeles, Future plans include reaching more students and strengthening ETM-LA’s visibility and marketing to be able to continue bringing music instruction to underserved Los Angeles children and communities. • One Neoliberalism, Many Resistances by Dennis R. Redmond
Copyright 2012 Dennis R. Redmond VIDEOGAME CULTURE AS TRANSNATIONAL MEDIA: ONE NEOLIBERALISM, MANY RESISTANCES BY DENNIS R. REDMOND DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Angharad Valdivia, Chair Professor Isabel Molina Professor Antoinette Burton Professor Paula Treichler, Emeritus ABSTRACT This dissertation analyzes two best-selling videogames, Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 4 (2008) and Square Enix' Final Fantasy 12 (2006), as sites of contestation between commercial media corporations on the one hand, and communities of artists, consumers and non-commercial digital users on the other. I argue that Metal Gear Solid 4 rewrites the stealth espionage thriller into a critique of neoliberalism's financial speculations and neocolonial wars, while Final Fantasy 12 rewrites the fantasy role-playing videogame into a critique of the colonial and neocolonial legacies of fantasy and role-playing fiction. Using the tools of critical communications theory, postcolonial media studies, and digital media scholarship, I argue that these videogames narrate the struggle between neoliberalism (i.e. the ideology of late 20 th century market fundamentalism which exerted global hegemony during the thirty years from 1975 to 2005) and a wide range of anti-neoliberal social movements, developmental states (especially those of the BRIC nations, i.e. Brazil, Russia, India and China), and non-commercial networks of digital production, distribution and consumption. I also argue that these videogames frame the politics of transnational media production and transnational audience reception in productive ways.

There are film music fans all over the world tonight who wish they could be occupying the seat you are currently in, but you are the lucky ones. What a night this is going to be! The forces that have come together for the show you are about to see are remarkable. There is so much more history represented in tonight’s program than merely the last 35 years. This evening is really about the entire history of film music. We’ll be enjoying the performances of a select few … some of my best friends, who just happen to the masters of modern film music. And we’ll hear the music of those I dearly miss … legends of the art form — the immortals. As I’ve said before, the great thing about celebrating Varèse Sarabande history is that, for us, the spotlight is always on the composers. Tonight is, without question, about them. All of them! We could never represent everyone. That’s been the hardest part about putting together this programme. I started with a list of well over 1500 scores — closer to 2000, actually.

Robert Townson ADONIS ALETRAS 13TH OCTOBER 2017 https://perspectiveforum.net/2017/10/13/robert-townson/ 1) ROBERT, AFTER PRODUCING OVER 1400 FILM MUSIC ALBUMS FOR VARESE SARABANDE, YOU HAVE ESSENTIALLY COLLABORATED WITH SOME PHENOMENAL COMPOSERS PAST AND PRESENT. CAN YOU PINPOINT SOME SHIFTS AND TRENDS IN FILM MUSIC? HOW ARE THINGS DIFFERENT YET SIMILAR NOWADAYS? Oh my goodness, that is an absolutely epic question. The world of film music is constantly evolving on all fronts. In every nook of our industry. Let me just reign this one in to the biggest shift in what I do. On one hand I am still producing almost as many CDs as ever (40 to 50 a year) but there is definitely a huge difference in the way things sell. The idea of selling a million and a half copies of Ghost, half a million Terminator 2, or two or three hundred thousand copies of a few various titles every year is now a distant memory. The challenges of how you earn money from the albums produced have never been greater. The answer to how I have come to terms with that reality and keep doing what I like to do is that I have been putting much more time into producing live events and developing a synergy between the growing demand that audiences have for hearing live film music in concert halls and arenas all over the world. I have been producing live concerts since the 90s, when I was travelling to Scotland two or three times a year with Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Joel McNeely, John Debney, Cliff Eidelman and others.

Stuart Rosen Senior Vice President General Counsel November 20, 2015 Chief, Litigation III Section Antitrust Division U.S. Department of Justice 450 5th Street NW, Suite 4000 Washington, DC 20001 Re: Justice Department Review of the BMI and ASCAP Consent Decrees To the Chief of the Litigation III Section: BMI recently alerted its community of affiliated songwriters, composers and publishers to the profound impact 100% licensing would have on their careers, both creatively and financially, if it were to be mandated by the U.S. Department of Justice. In a call to action, BMI provided a letter, one for songwriters and one for publishers, to which their signatures could be added. The response was overwhelming. BMI received nearly 13,000 signatures from writers, composers and publishers of all genres of music, at all levels in their careers. Some of the industry's most well- known songwriters added their names, including Stephen Stills, Cynthia Weil, Steve Cropper, Ester Dean, Dean Pitchford, Congressman John Hall, Trini Lopez, John Cafferty, Gunnar Nelson, Lori McKenna, Shannon Rubicam and Don Brewer, among many others. Enclosed you will find the letters, with signatures attached. On behalf of BMI, I strongly urge you to consider the voices of thousands of songwriters and copyright owners reflected here before making a decision that will adversely affect both the creators, and the ongoing creation of, one ofAmerica's most important cultural and economic resources.
