GORDON, ELIZA HITTMAN, STEVE MCQUEEN, KUMAIL NANJIANI, KELLY REICHARDT, CHLOÉ ZHAO AND MORE LOS ANGELES (March 3, 2021) – Film Independent, the nonprofit arts org that produces the Film Independent Spirit Awards, has announced its panelists for the 20th annual Directors Close-Up (DCU). As an official part of the month-long ramp-up to the April 22 Spirit Awards ceremony, the upcoming online panel series features in-depth discussions with the most celebrated filmmakers of the past year. As previously announced, 100% of this year’s DCU panelists will be 2021 Spirit Award nominees – a first in the history of the long-running program. The DCU offers creators and enthusiasts of TV and film a unique opportunity to hear acclaimed filmmakers discussing specific aspects of their craft in-depth. The series will take place every Wednesday over the course of two months, featuring the Spirit Award nominated directors and creators from indie film, documentary and television—all streamed directly to viewers’ laptop, living room or mobile device.     Are Google’s A.I.-Powered Phone Calls Cool, Creepy, or Both? The biggest nonromantic tech news of this week came from a new A.I. tool introduced at Google’s annual developer conference. The program, known as Duplex, is an automated voice assistant capable of making hair appointments, booking restaurant reservations and conducting other tasks over the phone. It even inserts lifelike pauses and filler words like “um” and “hmm” for extra realism. At no point in the demo were the receptionists on the other end of the calls informed that they were talking to a computer rather than another human. The onstage demo of Duplex drew lots of oohs and aahs. Admittedly, it was an incredible piece of technological theater — reminiscent of the “one more thing” twists of golden-age Apple events. And it’s important to keep in mind that Duplex is just an experiment, and it may never be released publicly in its current form.     How The Big Sick reminded me of underlying bias and self- segregation photo by Caroline Tan Released on June 23 and hitting the big screen internationally, The Big Sick, earned a 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.1/10 on IMDb. The movie is written by and stars real- life spouses Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, although only Kumail plays himself. It isn’t your average indie romantic comedy. Although it is a true story about an interracial couple, it also addresses the cultural rifts that exist in more parts of America than people realize. Uber driver by day and a stand-up comedian by night, Kumail meets Emily, a white college student, during one of his performances. What starts as a complaint about heckling turns into a one-night stand and quickly evolves into a loving relationship. However, it was a relationship that was kept in the dark. Raised in a traditional Pakistani house, Kumail is proud of his cultural heritage. Using his one- man show, he educates people about the country’s history and culture, which draws in small, unenthused “crowds.” Despite this, he is never discouraged to spread the knowledge of his birth country. His parents are no different, insisting on an arranged marriage by inviting different Pakistani women as marriage prospects every time the family gets together for dinner. Despite his serious relationship with Emily, Kumail never takes a firm stand against this idea of an arranged marriage, knowing that his family will shun him. This fear of being ostracised from his family is the wedge that divides him from Emily.
