  • The Big Sick- Review
The largest language academy within Vallès Oriental is pleased to provide you with this review, crosswords and contest. The Big Sick– Review Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, The Big Sick tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he's never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart . A powerful and emotional film that touches upon topics not normally seen in romantic comedies. The assimilation of culture and what the meaning of family and love can mean to a person, what pursuing your dreams can do to your relationships to both family and significant others, finding out who you want to be despite everyone telling you you're wrong. Thus is a hugely enjoyable, lovable comedy. Even in the darkest and most dire of moments, The Big Sick never stops being a comedy. In the film – as is the case in life – humor can still stand out and get you through the most difficult of times. Eamed with Michael Showalter’s direction, producer Judd Apatow, and a top notch cast , Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V.

  • THE BIG SICK by Emily V
THE BIG SICK by Emily V. Gordon & Kumail Nanjiani 1 OVER BLACK. We hear audience laughter. ANDY DODD (V.O.) Give it up for my man, Mr. Kumail Nanjiani! KUMAIL (V.O.) Hello. I grew up in Pakistan. And people are always asking me, what was that like? Really not that different from here. I mean we played cricket, which is just a spicer version of baseball. And we prayed a lot. Well not a lot, just five times a day. And we marry someone our parents find for us. Arranged marriage, you know. For me, it was probably that we got episodes of the A-Team a little bit later. And by a little bit later, I mean we just got episode two. But other than that, it was exactly the same. A CREDIT SEQUENCE PLAYS. Kumail drives an Uber around Chicago with VARIOUS PASSENGERS in the backseat. INT. TRIPLE DOOR - PRESENT DAY - NIGHT Kumail walks into the comedy club as MARY is doing a set on stage. CHRIS intercepts Kumail as he walks backstage. CHRIS There's no bad crowds dude. Only bad comedians. KUMAIL You complain about the crowd like all the time. CHRIS Yeah, but that's when they're really bad. KUMAIL So like ninety percent of the time, they're really bad? 2 CHRIS Will you just watch and give me notes tonight? If we both give each other notes, I think it would be helpful. KUMAIL Your notes are just to add more "fucks" into the bit. CHRIS Fuck's a funny word.

  • AI Google Article
Are Google’s A.I.-Powered Phone Calls Cool, Creepy, or Both? The biggest nonromantic tech news of this week came from a new A.I. tool introduced at Google’s annual developer conference. The program, known as Duplex, is an automated voice assistant capable of making hair appointments, booking restaurant reservations and conducting other tasks over the phone. It even inserts lifelike pauses and filler words like “um” and “hmm” for extra realism. At no point in the demo were the receptionists on the other end of the calls informed that they were talking to a computer rather than another human. The onstage demo of Duplex drew lots of oohs and aahs. Admittedly, it was an incredible piece of technological theater — reminiscent of the “one more thing” twists of golden-age Apple events. And it’s important to keep in mind that Duplex is just an experiment, and it may never be released publicly in its current form. But the demo — which amounted to a series of extremely high-tech crank calls — raised a lot of hackles. Zeynep Tufekci, a professor and writer, called Duplex “horrifying,” and said that Google’s willingness to use A.I. to fool humans — and to brag about its ability to do so on stage at a public event — showed that “Silicon Valley is ethically lost, rudderless and has not learned a thing.” Matt Haughey, the creator of the internet forum MetaFilter, tweeted, “How Google did that Duplex A.I. voice demo without anyone flagging it internally is beyond me.” The company, he added, “needs a V.P.

  • Reminded Me of Underlying Bias and Self-Segregation
How The Big Sick reminded me of underlying bias and self- segregation photo by Caroline Tan Released on June 23 and hitting the big screen internationally, The Big Sick, earned a 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.1/10 on IMDb. The movie is written by and stars real- life spouses Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, although only Kumail plays himself. It isn’t your average indie romantic comedy. Although it is a true story about an interracial couple, it also addresses the cultural rifts that exist in more parts of America than people realize. Uber driver by day and a stand-up comedian by night, Kumail meets Emily, a white college student, during one of his performances. What starts as a complaint about heckling turns into a one-night stand and quickly evolves into a loving relationship. However, it was a relationship that was kept in the dark. Raised in a traditional Pakistani house, Kumail is proud of his cultural heritage. Using his one- man show, he educates people about the country’s history and culture, which draws in small, unenthused “crowds.” Despite this, he is never discouraged to spread the knowledge of his birth country. His parents are no different, insisting on an arranged marriage by inviting different Pakistani women as marriage prospects every time the family gets together for dinner. Despite his serious relationship with Emily, Kumail never takes a firm stand against this idea of an arranged marriage, knowing that his family will shun him. This fear of being ostracised from his family is the wedge that divides him from Emily.
