Not only do our courses give students the practical skills to care for livestock and crops, but they also look at agriculture as a bigger picture, exploring the environmental impact of farming and ways to improve farming techniques for the future. We have invested heavily into our farm resources across our Colleges in Yorkshire and Cumbria, and offer students the opportunity to put theory into practice and gain practical experience on both arable and livestock farms, in both upland and lowland terrains.

“ I’ve always wanted a career in Agriculture and the access to the resources and qualifications offered at the college stood out for me. My course has allowed me to explore new skills that are specifically industry related, while also gaining much wider skills that help set you up for life. It has made me realise that you can learn and enjoy yourself at the same time, even if the work is hard! My highlights include receiving 2nd place in the Stockmanship competition with my dairy heifer, an amazing experience that gave me loads of confidence. The Paris trip to the SIMA Agricultural Show and the various off-site farm visits to compare and contrast operations really help bring the course alive. The Summer Ball is a fantastic way to end the year and I’m really proud to be involved in the Student Union as the U18s Events Officer, helping to arrange and take part in a host of fun and interesting student activities. I would describe my time, so far, as a life changing experience that anyone

would be crazy to miss! My next stop is to stay at the college and“ study for a Degree in Agriculture.

32 Askham Bryan College HIGHER EDUCATION NEIL FELL Foundation Degree Agriculture with Land Management “ I first completed the Advanced Apprenticeship in Agriculture by attending Askham Bryan's Thirsk Centre once a week, thus allowing me the flexibility to work on my family farm in Durham the rest of the time. I was fortunate enough to win a place on the Cattleman’s Academy sponsored by ASDA and ABP. This brought me into contact with some of the country’s finest beef producers spending time on their farms and learning valuable ideas to bring back into my own operation. My determination to learn more about the industry, and with expansion of my own business in mind for the future, I embarked on the Foundation Degree in Agriculture with Land Management. This course has added direct value to my business by the use of higher level ICT skills and the ability to manage finances more effectively. I also gained knowledge of producing precise mixed ration for the animals enabling a far more efficient operation. Askham Bryan College is a fantastic place to study, especially with recent expansions into Cumbria and the Newton Rigg site to enable students to compare farming techniques. “ I was fortunate enough to leave school with good GCSE grades, but decided not to go down the A-level route, compared to many of my friends. I have always loved animals and to be able to study them as part of a college course, was a dream come true! I enjoyed everything about the course; the tutors and technicians, the course content and all the new people I met, who will be the greatest friends for years to come. I undertook my work placement at the Coniston Falconry Centre in the Yorkshire Dales and thoroughly enjoyed acquiring new skills and experiencing the expectations involved with maintaining birds of prey. Seeing those magnificent birds fly in such surroundings as the Yorkshire Dales was thrilling. Askham Bryan College I would recommend highly as it’s a great place all round with a fantastic range of animals and a well thought out course covering a host of specialist topics. 48 Askham Bryan College HIGHER EDUCATION TIMOTHY CONNORS BSc (Hons) Degree Animal Management and Science “ I joined the College after completing my A-levels. In particular, my Biology A-level really equipped me for the Degree study and animal science elements involved. The Animal Management programme opened my eyes to a new world of experiences including the trip to South Africa to take part in conservation work, followed up by an 8 week research expedition to Indonesia involving small primates with an organisation called Operation Wallacea. These were incredible, inspiring and awesome career defining moments. Askham Bryan College’s link with Flamingo Land allowed me to gain great insight in to the zoological industry and created the opportunity for me to be employed as an Animal Keeper at Longleat Safari and Adventure Park. It’s incredible applying my animal collection knowledge from College, my days now entail coming face to face with Giant Anteaters, and Coati and a whole host of other fascinating species. Beyond the studies I found the tutors, my friends and of course the animals awe inspiring. My wider experience included learning archery, climbing, shooting and film

clubs. Living in the halls was invaluable for independence and the “ Summer Ball was not to be missed!

“ When I was younger, I was lucky enough to live in New Zealand for 6 months, whereby, we had the opportunity to go into the ‘Bush’ and spend loads of time enjoying the outdoor life. In my spare time on leaving school, I volunteered for the Wildlife Habitat and Protection Trust in Church Fenton. I really enjoyed the opportunity to make a difference in the environment and help conserve and look after nature, consequently, speaking to various people, it led to me considering my future career options linked to the countryside and the outdoors. The course at Askham Bryan offered the subject areas that really interested me. We regularly went on field trips to explore and study various habitats such as wetlands, moorlands, urban and even coastal habitats enabling us to learn and apply a series of practical skills. I found the science elements of the course really useful and engaging as they were more practically based than at school. It was also great to have the opportunity to gain further qualifications in chainsaw operations, brushcutter, spraying and tractor driving, which are all useful for the future. Askham Bryan is a great practical college where you’re treated more like an adult. I’m continuing at the college to study for a Foundation Degree in Countryside Management to help realise my ambition

to travel and work in different environments around the world, and in particular“ to return to New Zealand as a Ranger.

56 Askham Bryan College HIGHER EDUCATION ALEX RIPPON Foundation Degree in Countryside Management (1st year)

“My strongest subjects at school were geography and science, but when considering my options beyond sixteen I really wasn’t sure of the next step. I came across the Countryside and Environment courses in the prospectus and it was obvious the course content matched my subject interests and strengths, while the practical elements made it even more appealing. The highlight at College so far has been the opportunity to visit Scotland to go deer stalking in the Caringorms, an experience that I can only describe as unbelievable. I also enjoy the field trips and particularly the regular visits to the North York Moors to perform surveys and carry various environmental and habitat related tasks. I’ve gained many new skills, especially on my work placement at Escrick Park Estate with over 10,000 acres of land, where, I’ve experienced various roles and responsibilities; it has given me a great insight in to the possible careers linked to practical estate management. One of the best decisions I made was to go residential and live in at the College. The independence is fantastic and you see your friends all the time, while meeting many more people from across the different subject areas of the College. After 2 years on the level 3 programme, I decided to progress to the Foundation Degree, I never realised how a practical course can still open up the door to higher education and combine the more academic

route. I hope my degree will help me towards moving into advisory or consultancy“ roles within the industry in the future.

“ Large machinery has always fascinated me from a young age after accompanying my dad to work on various occasions. I achieved well at school, but after a year of A-levels I decided it wasn’t the right route for me and looked for an option that suited my interests. The land based technology course gave me loads of great experiences particularly working on the off-road vehicles and having access to the college off-road track to test out our technical skills and mechanical set-ups. The trips really brought the course to life, for instance getting on-board the Eurostar across to Paris for the SIMA show and then visiting the John Deere engine factory were real highlights. We also had the opportunity to enter the IAgrE Young Engineers Vehicle Performance Competition to construct a remote control vehicle to handle challenging terrains, which was showcased at the Aston Martin factory. I found the course to be taught at an incredibly high standard and it has allowed me to specialise my studies

further at Harper Adams University where I’ll be studying for a“ degree in off-road vehicle design.

72 Askham Bryan College HIGHER EDUCATION HARRIETT BOWDEN Foundation Degree in Equine Sports Management “ After completing sixth form and my A-levels, I wanted to progress to higher education, I chose Askham Bryan College because when I came to look around it seemed really friendly, and the staff made a big effort with each individual student. My equine degree provided me with both the practical side of horses, which I love, and also enables me to learn the theoretical aspects of the industry, which I feel will open up my choices and chances of related careers. I was lucky enough to be awarded the Brenda Whitbourn Memorial Scholarship. This has been an incredible opportunity as it has allowed me to spend the summer competing at affiliated British Eventing. The scholarship will also allow me the means to complete the BHS Stage 4 and Intermediate Teaching exam thus increasing my career options further along with the degree study. I love the practical session and the riding lessons alongside helping out around the yard and stables. The highlight is putting all the hard work together and competing as part of the College equine team. You have so many opportunities and support at the

College and you really get loads out of the experience if you’re willing to put “ the effort in, not to mention lots of fun!

HANNAH READMAN Level 2 Diploma in Floristry “ I discovered my interest for creative design and creating displays using flowers when I had the opportunity of a placement, as part of my school work experience, at a shop called The Rainflorist’s in Nether Poppleton. It was a really nice place to work and thoroughly enjoyed my time there, particularly the ‘hands on’ nature of the tasks involved. On leaving school I was given the opportunity to undertake a Summer School at Askham Bryan College that involved all things surrounding Horticulture and a great introduction to the types of activities that students can do on such courses and it really helped me make up my mind on what course I wanted to do. So far my time has been an exciting and fun experience, getting involved in creating displays and entering competitions like at the Harrogate Flower Show is really rewarding. On completion of this course, I’m looking forward to continuing and progressing on to the Level 3 Diploma in Floristry. My own specialist interest surrounds

wedding displays and working with brides on their wedding day, something I would like to pursue in the future and“ hopefully one day run my own floristry business.

“After leaving Millthorpe School in York, I decided to undertake a Public Services Diploma with the initial thought of joining the Police, however, after two years my ambitions changed. My real passion was sport and in particular playing golf. While talking to people at my local golf club it became clear that opportunities did exist linking up the outdoors and sport into a career path. I enrolled at Askham Bryan College on the Foundation Degree in Sports Surface Management, whereby I managed to receive the ‘Best Student Award’ for the course, subsequently; I then progressed to the BSc (Hons) in Applied Horticulture. I combined my studies with a work placement as a Greenkeeper at my local golf club, which proved invaluable experience. The course also involved being part of the team that designed and constructed the College’s new 3 hole golf course including a solar powered irrigation system, seeing it transform from a field into a completed course really inspired my own career aspirations. Since completing my studies, I’ve been offered a short term placement in Holland before heading over to Trinidad and Tobago to work as a Head Greenkeeper. My ultimate ambition is to work at top sporting venues around the world. Overall studying at the College was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and the

qualifications seemed like a bonus in comparison to the wealth“ of experience and opportunities gained.

“ After a gap of 6 years since completing my Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture, I wanted to boost my existing knowledge and returned to academic study through the Foundation Degree to increase my career aspirations, in particular the ambition of setting up on my own one day. I have directly utilised the theoretical elements and study skills gained on the course within my current job thus ‘bridging a gap’ on my existing knowledge and increasing my overall effectiveness. The bonus of vocationally related outdoor activities the College provided, coupled with the opportunity to access a range of specialist equipment and resources, added invaluable skills and experience. I now regard myself as a highly organised, well informed professional tree specialist. Accessing higher level studies have given me the confidence to consider roles I would never previously have

dreamed of applying for. Next stop for me is the ‘Top Up’ option“ on the BSc (Hons) Degree.

“ The decision to become a Veterinary Nurse didn’t occur until I was 18, while studying a Natural Resource programme in Stockholm, Sweden. One of the modules on a course focused on Veterinary Nursing and at that point I realised my career ambitions. My options to study veterinary nursing to a higher level were limited in Sweden due to demand, so I started thinking about programmes abroad. The Askham Bryan College homepage and the course description appealed to me and I came to England for the first time in September 2010. My placement at End Cottage Veterinary Clinic in Howden, East Yorkshire was very supportive and helpful, I became quickly part of the team and a great experience overall. One of my colleagues noticed a position for a Vet Nurse based back in Sweden, and upon applying I managed to secure an interview, while I was home at Christmas. After a two hour interview they

asked me if I would come and work for them after I qualified - I signed“ the contract two weeks later.
