We focus on person-centred planning to help you grow and live a more independent and fulﬁlling life. Work and training When joining Magpies, you are linked with a personal key worker who will offer you support and guidance. We can help you gain independent living skills, access mainstream services and join employment programmes. Activities and wellbeing We host a range of fun activities to help you live an active and enjoyable life. As well as running sessions at our centre, we also enjoy spending time in the local community. Our variety of activities changes throughout the year, offering something to enjoy for everyone. Our activities include: • Art • Baking • Sports • Media • Dance • Music • Cooking • Radio • Independent Living • Woodwork Outreach Our outreach service involves supporting members at home and in the local community. Whether someone needs only a few hours a week, or multiple days a week, all outreach activities are focused on achieving positive outcomes for our members. The site displays a range of sedimentary features including faulting, massive to fine bedding, cross bedding and horizons of coarse quartz. Some sections illustrate the resistant qualities of this rock which make it a valuable building stone, particularly its grain size, structure and mineralogy. HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS: The quarries were standing (which presumably means that they were not being actively worked) in 1930, according to the Huddersfield and Halifax memoir p.199 (reference below), producing building stone. There is a comment, on p46 of the memoir, that the Rough Rock was largely used for road setts and curbs in the Halifax area at that time. The 1927 Rochdale memoir (details below) says on p155 that the Rough Rock was crushed to obtain sand and gravel for concrete. EDUCATIONAL VALUE: The quarry face to the western end of the site is especially suitable for geological parties.

A LARGE BRONZE AGE COLLARED URN FOUND AT MOUNT ZION CHAPEL OVENDEN NEAR HALIFAX, WEST YORKSHIRE By Raymond Varley The Bronze Age Collared Urn from Ovenden on display at the Tolson Memorial Museum, Huddersfield A LARGE BRONZE AGE COLLARED URN FOUND AT MOUNT ZION CHAPEL OVENDEN NEAR HALIFAX, WEST YORKSHIRE By Raymond Varley ABSTRACT In 1877, a large Bronze Age Collared Urn containing cremation remains was found in a stone cist by a labourer digging a grave in the grounds of Mount Zion Chapel. It was subsequently placed on display in the museum of the Halifax Literary & Philosophical Society. The urn was later donated to Bankfield Museum, Halifax and in 1969 the writer made arrangements for the urn to be loaned to the Tolson Memorial Museum, Huddersfield. ARCHAEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND The location of the discovery of this large Bronze Age Collared Urn was sited at Ogden by Watson1 in 1952 followed by the writer2 in a summary of the urn in 1968. Ling Roth3 reports that the urn was discovered in February 1877 by a grave digger in the grounds of Mount Zion Chapel, Ovenden. Jas Davis also gives an account of a large urn containing cremations remains discovered about a year prior to 18794. He records that the urn was found “in making an extension of the burial ground of St. John’s Church, above Mixenden, a few yards beyond the boundary wall”. The measurements and description of the urn, which “was placed with the mouth downwards on a slab of stone” and “the base is very narrow, and not being broad enough to support the urn” is identical to the one found at Mount Zion Chapel.

OVENDEN ARLFC Club Background Ovenden Amateur Rugby League Football Club is a non- profit making voluntary sports organisation and was founded in 1939. It prides itself in its ability to produce its own talented players and involve children and young people, from its local community, in rugby league. Ovenden ARLFC is based in the North of Halifax, West Yorkshire and serves the local areas of Ovenden, Illingworth, and Mixenden which are all within the metropolitan district of Calderdale. The wider membership, be they players, committee members or supporters are mostly from the local area, often spanning generations of local families who have played for the club or still bring their children to play for the club. Others come from all over Halifax as the club develops players in their early years and see them move on to play in many of the oetehr open age teams in the Calderdale area as mature and talented players. A succession of junior players moves onto the professional ranks and international honours, which makes Ovenden a grass-roots 'breeding ground' for local talent. The club has a long tradition and good reputation area and runs eight junior teams, from under 8’s to under 18’s, two open-age teams and an Under 15 and Under 13 girl’s rugby teams. The club has recently been awarded 'Clubmark' status and are moving into their third season since their return to the National Conference League. Volunteers are vital to prosperity and future of the club at all levels whether coaches, team managers, league representatives or helpers with match day arrangements or giving a hand in the social facility.
