32 2011-12 Duquesne women’s record book HEAD COACH SUZIE MCCONNELL-SERIO

Women's Basketball Hall of Famer and native Suzie McConnell-Serio, one of the most highly-decorated players in the history of women's bas- ketball, owner of over 300 wins as a high school head coach and former WNBA Coach of the Year, was named the ninth head coach in the history of the Duquesne women's basketball program in April of 2007.

AT DUQUESNE (2007-PRESENT)

In McConnell-Serio's fi rst season, the team who the coaches and media picked to fi nish 13th in the , surprised everybody by fi nish- ing tied for seventh place in the A-10 with a record of 6-8 and 15-15 overall. Inheriting a team coming off its worst since 1993 (7-20 in 2007) McConnell- Serio guided the Dukes to their second most improved season in school history (6.5 games). Additionally, DU improved 79 positions in the RPI, which was the most since 2001. McConnell-Serio's success on the fl oor was recognized by league offi cials as Kristi Little was named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year as well as being named to the A-10 Third Team All-Conference and All Defensive Team. SUZIE MCCONNELL-SERIO PERSONAL In McConnell-Serio's second season, Duquesne recorded its fi rst-ever 20-win sea- son. AS A COACH AT OAKLAND CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL (1991-2003)

McConnell-Serio took the reins of the Oakland Catholic program in 1990-91 and won her fi rst of three Class AAAA State Championships in 1993. In 13 years, McConnell-Serio averaged over 24 wins per season. She added additional state titles in 2001 & 2003 and runner-up fi nishes in 2000 & 2002. Nearly a dozen of her former players went on to earn NCAA Division I scholarships.

AS A PLAYER AT PENN STATE (1985-88)

In four seasons at PSU (1984-85 through 1987-88), McConnell-Serio helped the Nittany Lions to a 95-33 record and four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In the process, she was named the school's fi rst First-Team All-American while setting NCAA Division I records for career assists (1,307), assists in a season (355 in 1987) and season assist average (11.8 in 1987). Her assist total and assist per game average led the nation in both 1986 & 1987.

AS A PLAYER AT SETON-LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL (1981-84)

A two-sport star at and Parade All-American Seton-La Salle high school, McConnell-Serio was a four year starter and led the Lady Rebels to a 35-1 record and PIAA Championship her senior season. She led the Seton-LaSalle team the 1983 WPIAL Championship while hitting at a .500 clip. while being named Pittsburgh Post-Gazette AA Girl’s Player of the Year as well as Female Athlete of the Year.

AWARDS AND HONORS

McConnell-Serio was named to the USA Today All-Time Women's Basketball Team and was also named one of Sports Illustrated's Top 50 Pennsylvania Athletes of the Century. She was a member of the 10-person USA Basketball Executive Committee from 2001-04 and was inducted to the Western Penn- sylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. She was also the fi rst Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year winner in 1999 and repeated the honor in 2010. The October 29, 2007 issue of Sports Illustrated listed McConnell-Serio as the best 5-4 basketball player, male or female, of all-time.

FAMILY

McConnell-Serio and her husband, Pete - who along with Suzie was born and raised in the Brookline area of Pittsburgh - are the parents of four children: Peter (21), Jordan (17), Mandy (15) and Madison (14).

Her brother Tom played two seasons at Davidson and was the head coach for Saint Francis, Pa. from 1992-99 and has been an assistant coach at Wake Forest, Marquette and Dayton as well as assistant women’s coach at the University of Colorado with sister Kathy. He currently is an assistant women’s coach at Old Dominion.

Her sister Kathy, who was her teammate on the 1984 PIAA Championship team, was the head coach at Tulsa (1999-05) and the University of Colorado (06-10) before accepting her current position as an assistant coach with the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock. She was also an assistant coach at the University of Illinois (1996-99) and Rutgers (1994-95). Her fi rst coach job out of college was at the University of Pittsburgh as a recruiting coordinator during the 1991 season. Kathy played in four NCAA Championships while at the University of Virginia.

Her brother Tim played at Waynesburg and has served as the boy’s coach at Chartiers Valley since 1992 and has won over 80 percent of his games while earning his 400th career win in 2010.

Her sister Maureen played at the University of Pittsburgh and her nephew T.J. (Tim’s son) is currently on the Duquesne men’s basketball team. .

Assistant coach Dan Burt brings 14 years of Division I experience to the Duquesne bench. A native of nearby Washington, Pa., Burt came to Duquesne DAN BURT PERSONAL from Bucknell where he was an assistant for three seasons (2004-07). He was also an assistant for three seasons at both West Virginia (1998-2001) and UNC Birthdate: August 12, 1970 Wilmington (2001-04) prior to Bucknell. Birthplace: Washington, Pa. Burt has also facilitated roundtable discussions at the WBCA National Coaches Convention. He was one of 15 assistant coaches selected from around the country to lead the discussions in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. He also coordinated a roundtable meeting for the entire athletic department at UNC Wilmington during 2003-04 that focused on recruiting for all sports at the school.

In 2002, Burt worked with YES, Youth Education through Sports, Basketball Clinic as part of the Final Four Festivities.

Burt graduated from Trinity High School in Washington, Pa. prior to earning a bachelor's degree in physical education from West Liberty State College in 1993. While a Hilltopper, Burt was a scholar-athlete award winner as a member of the men's basketball team.

Following graduation, Burt worked as an admissions counselor at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va. for fi ve years. He was an assistant coach with the men's team during the 1994-95 campaign and was also a women's college basketball referee in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland.

Burt is married to Kata Katanich-Burt. The couple has two sons - Soma, born Dec. 3, 2004 and Milan born May 6, 2011.
