PART I VENON/E TRIPONTIUM Preface THE following notes on the Roman Sites of South-West Leicester shire are of a somewhat fragmentary character. They will be found, however, to make some contribution to present day know ledge of the Midlands during the Roman occupation and will, the writer hopes, pave the way for excavation of a more ambitious character. The writer is convinced that systematic search and enquiry would reveal a number of other sites in this corner of the county at present unrecorded. Hinckley, Higham-on-the-Hill, Market Bosworth and Peckleton, where some evidence of Roman occupation has come to light, would possibly be found to be homesteads of the Roman-British farmer similar to Barwell and Sapcote. There is here every indication that in early forest clearings the land was tilled and stock raised for the important market town of Ratse Coritanorum. Owing to the lack of vigilance and to the superficial resem blance of Roman building material to what may be found on the site of any old cottage, there can be no doubt that much valuable evidence is often overlooked and for ever lost to us. Whatever historical interest these notes may afford to the antiquarian, their value has been considerably enhanced to the student by the descriptive and comparative notes on the coarse pottery contributed by Mr. B. H. St. J. O'Neil, of the Office of Works. His invaluable help in the examination of this material, and also in the revision of the complete type-script of this paper for the press, places the writer under a great debt of gratitude. -

E DEVELOPMENT CONTROL AND REGULATORY BOARD 12 TH OCTOBER 2006 REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY SERVICES COUNTY MATTER LAFARGE AGGREGATES LTD. – CONSTRUCTION OF AN EXTENSION TO THE EXISTING TILE WORKS OPEN STORAGE AREA AND ASSOCIATED DRAINAGE AND LANDSCAPE WORKS – LAFARGE AGGREGATES TECHNICAL CENTRE, SHAWELL QUARRY, GIBBET LANE, SHAWELL (HARBOROUGH DISTRICT) 2006/0333/03 – 7 March 2006 Background 1. Lafarge Aggregates Ltd. has submitted an application to extend an existing open stock ground relating to the roof tile factory at Shawell Quarry in order to overcome a shortage of storage space at the adjacent concrete blockworks site. The proposed extension area forms part of an area previously quarried for boulder clay which has since been restored to grassland. Location of Proposed Development 2. Shawell Quarry, operated by Lafarge Aggregates Ltd, is a sand and gravel quarry and landfill site located south of Lutterworth between the villages of Cotesbach and Shawell. The operations at the site include mineral extraction and a landfill operation to the north of Gibbet Lane, and a quarry processing plant, concrete block works, operational and restored silt lagoons and a roof tile factory to the south of Gibbet Lane. The M1 motorway is approximately 1200 metres east of the quarry, the M6 motorway 800 metres south and the A5 trunk road 200 metres to the south west. The line of the former Great Central Railway runs adjacent to the eastern boundary of the quarry and is located approximately 500 metres east of the application site. 3. The application site comprises part of an agricultural field, located south of the roof tile factory and north of the quarry silt lagoons, which has been restored to grassland following mineral extraction. -

TiEley Award 2003 Pruied Corley Services, M6, Wurwicks hire 'Puttifig- he brakes on m~torwayservice crime' Summary 'Welcome Break', Corley motorway services, M6, Warwickshire was typical of any service area catering to approximately 2.5 million travelling members of the public twenty four hours of the day every day of the year. And like other services crime and fear of crime issues hindered the business operation. The overriding concern was the scale of vehicle related offences, in pdcular theft of/from cars and seizure of high value HGV loads. The amenity building's presented a picture of shop theft and attacks on the games machines with some robbery related offences. Crime pattern analysis was undertaken and reflected 40% of all crime en site was vehicle related, in fact such offences accounted for 10% of all auto-crime offences in the Borough. The most notable item stolen from vehicles was a laptop computer which out of 170 such offences over 12 months accounted for some 99 theft from unattended vehicles. The lorry parks were also given 'unwelcome attention' with 40 such offences out of the stated 170 offences HGV related. Foreign lorry drivers were particularly vulnerable as they were not aware of the risk in leaving loads unattended. The principle partnership of Welcome Break and Warwickshire Police agreed to install access barriers to and from the minor road access off the services to reduce permeability. The car park benefited from 'Your car is valuable' advice signage as well as improved lighting and redefining of parking areas to improve natural surveillance. Laptop safes were also added to the north-bound to offer storage for such high value goods. -

Leicestershire Historian
the Leicestershire Historian 1991 7776 Leicestershire Historian, which is published annually, is the magazine of the Leicestershire Local History Council and is distributed free to members. The Council exists to bring local history to the doorstep of all interested people in Leicester and Leicestershire, to provide opportunities for them to meet from time to time, to act as a coordinating body between the various county history societies, to encourage and support local history exhibitions and generally to promote the advancement of local history studies. In particular the Council aims to provide a service to all the local history societies and groups throughout the county, by keeping in touch with them and offering advice. An Information Pack is sent to all groups who become affiliated to the Council and items are added to it from time to time. One-day Conferences are held in the spring and autumn, to which members (both individuals and groups) are invited, to meet and compare notes about their activities. An up-dated list of groups, many of them affiliated as members of the Council, is published in the magazine. There are summer outings and the AGM is held in May, kindly hosted by one of the affiliated groups. The different categories of membership and the subscriptions are set out below. If you or your group wish to become a member, please contact the Membership Secretary, who will be pleased to supply further information about membership and future activities.
