  • Known As One of the Most Charismatic Umpires of Major League Baseball, Kenneth Kaiser Lived a Lifetime of Following His Passion for America’S Greatest Pastime
Known as one of the most charismatic umpires of Major League Baseball, Kenneth Kaiser lived a lifetime of following his passion for America’s greatest pastime. Regarded as one of the best ‘balls and strikes’ umpires of his era, Ken was proud of his twenty-three-year long journey following the American League. Despite his years of rubbing elbows with some of baseball’s greatest legends, nothing brought him greater joy than traveling with Cheryl and spending time with his children. Ken cherished driving his Corvette to Lake George each summer reflecting on a life well lived. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and will always be revered as the funniest guy in the room and a larger than life figure on the baseball diamond. Growing up on the corner of Arnett Boulevard and Genesee Street in the city’s 19th Ward, the Gates Chili High School graduate never dreamed of becoming a man in blue. It was only after Ed O’Hara, an ex-boxer, stopped by the Kaiser family’s television repair store announcing he was going to umpire school in Florida that an inspirational spark was lit in Ken. His expectations were small and little did he know at the time that long ago trip to Daytona Beach would change the course of his life forever! His career began in the Florida State League in 1965 where he faced his share of adventures on his way to the major leagues. By his second year, he and his partner were chased across the South Carolina state line by irate fans with a barrel of hot tar after blowing a pair of calls and punching out the third baseman and manager to boot! These early years included roughing it on the back roads of small-town America during a 13-season stretch in the minor leagues.

  • Umpire Stories
So, You Want to Be an Umpire? David Vincent Modern umpires like to be invisible on the field and consider it a good day when no one remembers them after a game. There have been days, though, that are memorable ones. Here are some of those days. *** In 1882, National League Umpire Dick Higham, a former player, was expelled from the game for colluding with gamblers. He had been the first umpire to wear a mask on the field. Higham umpired his last game on June 22, 1882 in Buffalo. *** On June 19, 1896, the Chicago Colts (now Cubs) were in Cleveland to play the Spiders. The latter team was well known around the league for acting in a rowdy manner. In the seventh inning, Umpire Tom Lynch fined and ejected Cleveland Captain Patsy Tebeau, who refused to leave. Tebeau instead rushed at Lynch to assault the umpire but the two were separated by other players. Lynch refused to work the rest of that game and left the field. After a long delay, the game resumed with Chicago player Con Daily calling the pitches and Cleveland player Cy Young making the calls on the bases. Tebeau remained in the game and Chicago’s Cap Anson protested the game because Tebeau remained in the contest even though he had been ejected. Chicago won the game, 8-3, so the protest was not lodged. After the game, Lynch told a reporter: “I suppose I should not have permitted my indignation to get the better of me, but after all there are things that pass human endurance, and one of them surely is to be called vile names.” Lynch refused to work in Cleveland after that and did not until 1898.

Bang! Bang! You're Out! He may not have been the model of a major league umpire. But in 17 tumultuous years, Ron Luciano had more fun and "shot" more players than anyone in blue. by Ron Luciano and David Fisher / Sports Illustrated magazine excepted from The Umpire Strikes Back by Ron Luciano and David Fisher, © 1982 Bantam Books. I was born in Binghamton, NY in 1937. My father and his 2 brothers had emigrated to America from the tiny Italian village of San Giovanni about 20 years earlier. They split up when they got here and bought train tickets to wherever their money would take them because they couldn't believe that any one town would be large enough to have 3 jobs available. My father's ticket took him to the small town of Endicott, 10 miles from Binghamton in upstate New York. His brothers ended up in Pennsylvania. I had a normal childhood except perhaps for having a ringside seat at the largest gangland bust in history. When your name is Luciano and you're living in a community of 15,000 Italians, there's no such thing as a gangster. The Mafia was considered a local fraternal organization. There were perhaps 50 families in Endicott thought to be "connected" and they were among the most respected people in town.
