The Liturgy of the Word

A Reading from the Book of Jonah Jonah 3:1-5, 10

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it

The Gospel Mark 1: 14-20 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark. The people respond Glory to you, O Christ.

After John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

Gospeller The Gospel of our Savior. The people respond Praise to you, O Christ.

4 The Prayers of the People

Shine in your Church, O God; embolden us in a dark world to speak truthfully and to act with the courage of love. (The intercessor pauses for the congregation to add prayers). This day and always, Christ, be our Light.

Shine on your world, O God; hear the warring of nations and the wounding of the earth and give us peace at last. (The intercessor pauses for the congregation to add prayers). This day and always, Christ, be our Light.

Shine for your people, O God; make us one human family as we clothe each other with mercy and feed each other with justice. (The intercessor pauses for the congregation to add prayers). This day and always, Christ, be our Light.

Shine in our hearts, O God; help us to reach to the heavens and deep into our souls to seek you, to find you, and to know you. (The intercessor pauses for the congregation to add prayers). This day and always, Christ, be our Light.

Shine for the afflicted, O God; remind them of your deep compassion and how you tenderly bear all our sorrows. (The intercessor pauses for the congregation to add prayers). This day and always, Christ, be our Light.

Shine in the saints and the departed, O God; teach us to follow their lead to steadfast faith and eternal love. (The intercessor pauses for the congregation to add prayers). This day and always, Christ, be our Light. Celebrant O God, who sent your son Jesus to us as the light of the world, accept the prayers we offer in this joyful season and help us to follow Jesus as children of the light. Glory to you for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Table

Offertory Will you come and follow me Text: John J. Bell (b.1949) Music: Scottish traditional melody, arr. John J. Bell

5 Gathering Hymn WLP, #550, vs.1,2&5

The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant: God be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to God. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to God. People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Savior.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus Wonder, Love & Praise, #858

6 Holy and gracious God: in your infinite love you made us for yourself, and when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Creator of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and made himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect offering for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper, he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it do this for the remembrance of me.”

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption O God, in this offering of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the ever-blessed Mary, the blessed Holy Innocents, blessed Francis, blessed Clare, and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons; through Jesus Christ our Savior, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the church, and the author of

our salvation.

By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. Amen

The Lord’s Prayer As our Savior Christ has taught us we now pray:

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, On earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours. Now and for ever. Amen

Invitation to the Table

Jesus, we believe that you are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. We desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving as we proclaim your resurrection. We love you above all things, and long for you in our souls. Since we cannot receive you in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, come spiritually into our hearts. Cleanse and strengthen us with your grace Lord Jesus, and let us never be separated from you. May

we live in you, and you in us, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.
