Melbourne Vs Richmond BIG BASH LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL MELBOURNE STARS V JANUARY 22, 2016 PERTH SCORCHERS FACT SHEET LIBRARY Twenty20 Big Bash League (BBL) The Twenty20 Big Bash League (BBL), comprising eight city-based franchises, replaced the previous state- based domestic Twenty20 competition in 2011/12. Season 2015-16 marks the fifth staging of the tournament – otherwise known as BBL5. The inaugural winner was the Sydney Sixers, the Brisbane Heat won in 2012/13 and the Perth Scorchers have won the two most recent tournaments. Final BBL Table for 2015-16 Team M W L N/R Pts NetRR The Melbourne Stars opened their BBL5 Adelaide Strikers 8 7 1 - 14 0.544 campaign in stuttering fashion; losing their first two Melbourne Stars 8 5 3 - 10 0.366 matches to ultimate ladder leaders the Strikers in Perth Scorchers 8 5 3 - 10 0.181 Adelaide and to the Thunder at home. After Sydney Thunder 8 4 4 - 8 0.375 occupying a position in the lower half of the table Melbourne Renegades 8 3 5 - 6 -0.041 prior to the Christmas break the Stars then staged a Brisbane Heat 8 3 5 - 6 -0.204 strong recovery to win the next four matches Hobart Hurricanes 8 3 5 - 6 -0.955 comfortably and a finals berth looked assured. A Sydney Sixers 8 2 6 - 4 -0.330 surprise home defeat by the Hurricanes again threatened the Stars’ season but a comprehensive win in Perth against the champions of recent years, the Scorchers, lifted them to second position. The Scorchers began their season with a home loss to the Strikers but wins in five of the next six matches put them into the top four in early January. They seemed assured of a home semi-final until a batting collapse in their last home match for the season contributed to a heavy defeat by the Stars and a loss of net run rate to leave them in third position in the table. For the Stars none performed better with the bat than the two overseas players Luke Wright (250 runs, average 41.7 and strike rate of 137.4 runs per 100 balls) and Kevin Pietersen (187, 31.2 and 146.1). Next best was the mercurial Glen Maxwell (151, 37.8 and 142.5 from five matches). Ben Hilfenhaus was the most impressive performer with the ball 9 wickets, average 17.7 and strike rate of 12.7 balls per wicket from six matches). Others to impress were spinner Adam Zampa (9, 23.9 and 20.0) and John Hastings (8, 21.3 and 15.0 from five matches) Michael Klinger (241, 40.2 and 128.2) and Shaun Marsh (218, 72.7 and 128.2 from five matches were the outstanding batsmen for the Strikers. Most impressive with the ball were Andrew Tye (13, 15.8 and 13.9) and Jason Behrendorff (10,16.8 and 14.4 from six matches). The Sydney Sixers were the next most successful with one championship and a runner up. The Melbourne Stars, often one of the tournament’s favoured teams, have made the finals each season but have yet to proceed beyond the semi-final stage. At the other end of the spectrum, the Sydney Thunder which has three “wooden spoons” and a seventh placing in previous years has enjoyed a much improved season and has made the semi- finals for the first time. • Beware Milestones
DECIDE: How to Manage the Risk in Your Decision Making Beware milestones Having convinced you to improve your measurement of what really matters in your organisation so that you can make better decisions, I must provide a word of caution. Sometimes when we introduce new measures we actually hurt decision making. Take the effect that milestones have on people. Milestones as the name infers are solid markers of progress on a journey. You have either made the milestone or you have fallen short. There is no better example of the effect of milestones on decision making than from sport. Take the game of cricket. If you don’t know cricket all you need to focus in on is one number, 100. That number represents a century of runs by a batsman in one innings and is a massive milestone. Careers are judged on the number of centuries a batsman scores. A batsman plays the game to score runs by hitting a ball sent toward him at varying speeds of up to 100.2 miles per hour (161.3 kilometres per hour) by a bowler from 22 yards (20 metres) away. The 100.2 mph delivery, officially the fastest ball ever recorded, was delivered by Shoaib Akhtar of Pakistan. Shoaib was nicknamed the Rawalpindi Express! Needless to say, scoring runs is not dead easy. A great batting average in cricket at the highest levels is 40 plus and you are among the elite when you have an average over 50. Then there is Australia’s great Don Bradman who had an average of 99.94 with his next nearest rivals being South Africa’s Graeme Pollock with 60.97 and England’s Herb Sutcliffe with 60.63.

  • Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection
Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

  • 371 – March 2018 (2)
THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Shaun Udal James Tomlinson NEWSLETTER No. 371 – MARCH 2018 (2) Wednesday 28 March 2018 – Meeting The society extends a warm welcome to this evening’s speaker, Adrian Aymes, on his return to the Society. He first addressed members in September 2000, during his benefit year. ADRIAN NIGEL AYMES was born in Southampton on 4 June 1964, and attended Bellemoor School. He came late to first-class cricket. He joined the Hampshire staff when 21 years of age in 1986 but did not gain a regular place until he finally displaced Bob Parks some four years later. He gave notice of what was to follow on his first-class debut against Surrey at The Oval in 1987. With Hampshire in trouble, he battled to 58 not out. Subsequently, no player in the first-class game during the 1990s sold his wicket more dearly. He was undefeated in a high proportion of his innings, which spoke volumes for his technique, temperament and sheer cussedness. With Robin Smith, he became the beating heart and consciousness of the Hampshire batting. If he took root and dug in, Hampshire were generally assured of a competitive total. All of his eight centuries were made in adversity. Of all Hampshire’s wicket-keepers, only his successor, Nic Pothas, has a higher batting average. He was a passionately proud professional, and never gave less than his best. He was fortunate to keep wicket to two of the genuinely great bowlers in the history of the game. At the start of his career, he stood back to the incomparable Malcolm Marshall; latterly, he kept to the unique Shane Warne.
