HBO Leads With Four TV Wins at 2020 Golden Globes

Although host Ricky Gervais kicked off the 77th annual Golden Globes Awards by saying everyone should just thank Netflix and call it a night, it was HBO and Amazon Prime that took most of the key TV awards on Sunday night.
HBO, which was the night's leading platform with four total wins, won best drama and best limited series for Succession and Chernobyl, respectively, with Chernobyl repeating its Emmy win in this category and Succession likely beginning its run of many TV awards-show victories. Succession star Brian Cox was named best actor in a drama while Stellan Skarsgard, and his eyebrows, was named best supporting actor in a TV series, limited series or made-for-TV movie for Chernobyl. (The Golden Globes puts all TV supporting actors and actresses into a single category.)
Following in Emmys' footsteps, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave best comedy and best actress in a comedy honors to Fleabag and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who wrote, executive produced and starred in the series. Amazon tied Hulu as the second-most winning platform with two wins each.
Olivia Colman, who was part of the Fleabag cast, won the Golden Globe for best actress in a TV drama for playing Queen Elizabeth in season three of Netflix's The Crown. Colman won the best-actress Oscar in 2019 for playing another queen, Queen Anne, in The Favourite. Colman's win was Netflix's only one of the evening.
After winning the Emmy for this role, Michelle Williams took home the Golden Globe for best actress in a limited series for FX's Fosse/Verdon. Patricia Arquette won best supporting actress in a TV series, limited series or made-for-TV movie for Hulu's The Act.
Hulu took home another trophy for best actor in a comedy series for Ramy Youssaf's performance in Ramy, which Youssaf created as well. Youssaf charmingly told the star-studded crowd at the Beverly Hilton, "look, I know you guys haven't seen my show. Everyone's like 'is this an editor?'"
Russell Crowe was named best actor in a limited series for playing Roger Ailes in Showtime's The Loudest Voice. Crowe did not attend the ceremony but sent along a note read by The Morning Show's Jennifer Aniston saying he was remaining in Australia to protect his home and family during the continent's horrific and historic brush fires.
On the movie side, Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood led all comers with three wins: best comedy or musical, best original screenplay and best supporting actor for Brad Pitt. Sam Mendes' 1917 upset in two categories-director and best drama-even though the movie doesn't open in wide release until Friday.
Bong Joon Ho's Parasite was named best foreign-language film.
Joaquin Phoenix was named best actor in a drama for Joker, while Taron Egerton won best actor in a comedy or musical for Rocketman. Rocketman also won best original song for Elton John and his writing partner Bernie Taupin, while Joker won best original score for Hildur Gudnadottir.
Renee Zellwegger won best actress in a drama for Judy. Awkafina won best actress in a comedy or a musical for The Farewell, becoming the first Asian to ever win in this category. Laura Dern won best supporting actress for playing a ruthless divorce attorney in Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story, which came in with six nominations but only won once.
