THE IMPACT OF THE OREGON CULTURAL TRUST iii Preface and Acknowledgments Faculty in the University of Oregon’s Arts and Administration Program and its affiliated research center, the Center for Community Arts and Cultural Policy, have had a long professional affiliation with cultural agencies and organizations throughout the state. Preliminary discussions with Oregon Cultural Trust (OCT) leadership began in fall 2016 to explore whether the OCT Partners might be interested in engaging a study on the cultural policy ecology of the state. A subsequent preliminary conversation took place with the Trust executive director and manager regarding development of this year-long professional project (comprised of a faculty member and team of graduate students) to study the Oregon Cultural Trust throughout the 2017-2018 academic year. This study was designed to take place as a complementary – but not duplicative – process to the advocacy-focused impact report commissioned by the Trust, which took place in the same time period as this University of Oregon study. -

The Art of Ceremony: Regalia of Native Oregon September 28, 2008 – January 18, 2009 Hallie Ford Museum of Art Willamette University Teachers Guide This guide is to help teachers prepare students for a field trip to the exhibition, The Art of Ceremony: Regalia of Native Oregon and offer ideas for leading self-guided groups through the galleries. Teachers, however, will need to consider the level and needs of their students in adapting these materials and lessons. Goals • To introduce students to the history and culture of Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribal communities • To introduce students to the life ways, traditions, rituals and ceremonies of each of the nine tribal communities through their art and art forms (ancient techniques, materials, preparation, and cultural guidelines and practices) • To understand the relevance of continuity to a culture Objectives Students will be able to • Discuss works of art and different art forms in relation to the history and culture of Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribal communities • Discuss various traditional art forms as reflected in the objects and performances represented in the exhibition • Identify a number of traditional techniques, including weaving, beadwork and carving • Discuss tradition and renewal in the art forms of the nine tribal communities and their relationship to the life ways, traditions and rituals of the communities • Make connections to other disciplines Preparing for the tour: • If possible, visit the exhibition on your own beforehand. • Using the images (print out transparencies or sets for students, create a bulletin board, etc.) and information in the teacher packet, create a pre-tour lesson plan for the classroom to support and complement the gallery experience. -

HISTORY FIGHTING ILLINI HISTORY ILLINOIS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS 1914 Possibly the most dominant team in Illinois football history was the 1914 squad. The squad was only coach Robert Zuppke’s second at Illinois and would be the first of four national championship teams he would lead in his 29 years at Illinois. The Fighting Illini defense shut out four of its seven opponents, yielding only 22 points the entire 1914 season, and the averaged up an incredible 32 points per game, in cluding a 51-0 shellacking of Indiana on Oct. 10. This team was so good that no one scored a point against them until Oct. 31, the fifth game of the seven-game season. The closest game of the year, two weeks later, wasn’t very close at all, a 21-7 home decision over Chicago. Leading the way for Zuppke’s troops was right halfback Bart Macomber. He led the team in scoring. Left guard Ralph Chapman was named to Walter Camp’s first-team All-America squad, while left halfback Harold Pogue, the team’s second-leading scorer, was named to Camp’s second team. 1919 The 1919 team was the only one of Zuppke’s national cham pi on ship squads to lose a game. Wisconsin managed to de feat the Fighting Illini in Urbana in the third game of the season, 14-10, to tem porarily knock Illinois out of the conference lead. However, Zuppke’s men came back from the Wisconsin defeat with three consecutive wins to set up a showdown with the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium on Nov. -

82nd annual convention of the AFCA. JANUARY 9-12, 2005 * LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY President's Message It was an ordinary Friday night high school football game in Helena, Arkansas, in 1959. After eating our pre-game staples of roast beef, green beans and dry toast, we journeyed to the stadium for pre- game. As rain began to fall, a coach instructed us to get in a ditch to get wet so we would forget about the elements. By kickoff, the wind had increased to 20 miles per hour while the temperature dropped over 30 degrees. Sheets of ice were forming on our faces. Our head coach took the team to the locker room and gave us instructions for the game as we stood in the hot showers until it was time to go on the field. Trailing 6-0 at halftime, the officials tried to get both teams to cancel the game. Our coach said, "Men, they want us to cancel. If we do, the score will stand 6-0 in favor of Jonesboro." There was a silence broken by his words, "I know you don't want to get beat 6-0." Well, we finished the game and the final score was 13-0 in favor of Jonesboro. Forty-five years later, it is still the coldest game I have ever been in. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] No one likes to lose, but for every victory, there is a loss. As coaches, we must use every situation to teach about life and how champions handle both the good and the bad. I am blessed to work with coaches who care about each and every player.
