the Prez Sez...Bob - Grouch - Klawitter

I hope to be in Minnesota, Lutsen with a lot of you. I'm sure the trip leader will write a complete re- cap of the fun. If you didn't go on this one, you missed out on a great place.

The next two months are the best time to ski and play in the . I hope you all partake of some winter fun not to mention some partying with us. Our trips were planned with you in mind!

As a serious note (Yes, I have a serious side) I would like to ask you to give some thought to events or places (all seasons included) you would like the club to set up for the enjoyment of the members. Maybe a road trip to a weekend away from town or participation in an event for charity. Anything you would like to do with your friends. We're all in this club for the friends, aren't we?

The board is going to be considering other activities besides skiing. We need some summertime events. Camping?? Canoeing?? A weekend bike ride?? A few days at a spa?? A walk in the wilderness??

Give this some thought and send us your ideas. Don't worry, we'll not ridicule them. We want to become a more full time club. After all it's really your club and it can be whatever you make of it.

Thanks for the ideas. -

Lutsen Trip Leader report Happy New Year, Nomads! Thursday, 20 Nomads and 9 Dunelanders set out for the first trip of this ski season at Lutsen, MN. Yes, it is colder and snowier than our neck of the woods. Everyone has been anticipating the New Year’s Eve party at Papa Charlie’s and today’s club dinner at the Cas- cade Lodge. In fact, there’s plenty of music up here for those who want to listen or dance. The mountain is nearly 2,000 feet high overlooking . And some of the longer runs go about 2 miles. Plus the high speed gondola is the only one in the entire Midwest. Lutsen is 4 times larger than Indianhead, so there is a lot of skiable acreage. We want to welcome our 10 new members along with Duneland, especially Charlie Cleek, who is the group leader for the club. Without them, this trip could not have taken place. When you receive this newsletter, we will still be in Lutsen, probably skiing, socializing, or toasting the New Year. If you come to the January social meeting, you are sure to get a recap of the trip from one of us. Otherwise, you may have to wait until the next newsletter in March. Happy 2016 and see you soon! Wish you were here! Chris Oldanie

4 Boyne Trip Leader report

Hello Ski and Snowboard Enthusiasts,

Allow me to introduce myself to those who don't know me. I'm Heather Seger and I will be your trip leader to Boyne Highlands, Feb 19th - 21.

On Friday, Feb 19th we will meet at Stadium Bank Stadium, 14011 Kenton Ave., Midlothian, IL I will have bagels and coffee at 9:00am in the parking lot. Please arrive before 9:45am at the latest to load. We leave promptly at 10:00am. We will drive 42 miles to the Indiana Dunes Visitors Center to pick up a fellow CMSC club /Duneland Ski Club members who are sharing the coach bus.

From there it is 325 miles, approximately 5 and a half hours. I suggest you either eat a big breakfast or take a sand- wich on the bus because there will not be a lunch stop. When we get to the resort you can either have open menu in the main lodge restaurant or have sandwich fare at the Slope Side Lounge. This particular weekend Boyne Highlands is hosting Indiana Ski Counsel Race Weekend. It is also the Nascar Daytona 500. Therefore this trip's theme is "Racing". We will celebrate Nastar and Nascar. To participate you could wear any race shirts. I will have decor on the bus to set the mood. The Nomads will have a club race for $5 on the hill on Saturday afternoon. If you race and would also like to participate in the Indiana Ski Counsel races and amenities, there is an additional cost of $20. See me for details. Whether you race or not, there is still fun for all.

The Nomads members are staying in the Main Lodge. This Lodge is ski in/ski out. The cost of the trip includes break- fast Saturday and Sunday and a dinner on Saturday night. The Nomads dinner is currently located at the Heather High- lands. This Lodge is across the parking lot from the main lodge. Lift tickets are for Saturday and Sunday. Boyne High- lands resort no longer offers a shuttle to Boyne Mountain. You have the option to ski Boyne Mountain on either day by taking a taxi. The coach bus will not be going to Boyne Mountain. On Sunday check out time is 1:00pm. The bus will be outside the door to load at 2:00pm and leave at 3:00pm. The front desk will know by that time whether or not your room will be occupied for Sunday night. If it's not going to be occupied, arrangements can be made to check out before load- ing the bus. If your room will be taken later that day, the front desk will let you know and you can share another No- mad's room for changing/showering. You are free to ski up until loading time and take a sandwich on the bus or come in to change and eat lunch before departure. Again the bus will not stop until we get to Indiana Dunes Visitors Center to drop off our guests.

I will complete later details by the day of the trip. I will have buttons with your name and a trip itinerary Friday Feb 19th morning. We will have some fun games on the bus get to know each other on the way there. There will be 2 large cool- ers on the bus that each take two seats. One is with water, pop, and ice. 5 TRAVEL TIPS for Skiers Over 50

Don't Trust Over-the-Counter Drugs Overseas Drugs obtained overseas are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. So always carry these basic over the counter drugs when you travel. Some suggestions is: Antacids, anti-diarrheal, sunscreen, cough and cold medicine, hydrocortisone cream, motion sickness medicine, antihistamines, and insect repellent.

If You Are Going to a Sunny Locale Be sure to ask your doctor if any of your prescription medicines cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Many do.

Create a Simple Medical Information Form to Carry with you. Your form should include: Your name, address, and phone number Friends and relatives who should be contacted in an emergency including needed contact information Personal physician contact and Dentist contact Current medications, both prescription and OTC Known drug and food allergies Name and number of medical insurance company (NO 1-800 numbers)

Insurance Medicare will not cover you outside the US, Mexico or Canada. But a lot of insurance policies such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield do. Check with your carrier prior to departure about what documentation they require for reimbursement and payment. In addition, some insurance carriers maintain offices overseas. Check with them. Last but not least, consider purchasing an insurance policy from your tour operator.

Even in the United States, Medicare and most insurance plans only pay to get you to the nearest hospital. If you need to be evacuated to a more appropriate facility it can be at your own expense. This is another rea- son to purchase trip interruption and cancellation insurance from your tour operator.

Take More Prescription Medicine Than You Think You Will Need An extra week’s worth is a good rule of thumb. You never know when your trip will be interrupted.

Put your Pills in Your Carry On You never know when your luggage may be lost or stolen

The Top Triggers of Travelers Diarrhea custards, pastries, and other desserts, raw vegetables, cold platters, and crudités, raw eggs or unpasteur- ized cheeses, tap water and ice cubes made of tap water, leafy green vegetables, raw shellfish and raw meat World's best medicine for traveler's diarrhea: IMODIUM AD

Bug Bites and Stings Applying meat tenderizer like Accent is one of the best ways to avoid pain and swelling. Make sure you take along an antihistamine if you are allergic to bug bites and stings. An EpiPen may also be a necessary.

Sunstroke Secret Eat bananas, tomatoes, and oranges which are rich in electrolytes to avoid dangerous dehydration.

Insulin Carry a prescription for your syringes. Many states and countries will not sell them to you over the counter.

Hi Nomads!

We are ending a year and beginning a new one. By the time this is article is read, a new year will be upon us. I remember my mother saying, time goes by faster and faster the older you get. So true! It’s a good thing we are part of a great group of people that stay active. Looking back at this past year, there are so many things we’ve done together. It was a pleasure organizing some of the events. For those of you who were able to join us, thank you. It is very much appreciated.

A quick run down of some of the fun we had: Of course, our great ski trips, spring and fall pic- nics, a scavenger hunt (Debbie D was the awesome organizer of this one), Christmas party with a Rockn Band, Casino trip, concerts in the park, fests, Bears games (thanks Heather!), Hawks games, and Balmoral Race track where 22 Nomads joined us to bid farewell to a classic race track, and many other things.

So to start the new year, let’s stay with a classic: The Original Aurelio's Pizzeria in Homewood. We need 25 people to prepay to make the deal happen, please pay by January 17th.

Place: Aurelio's Pizzeria in Homewood Address: 18162 Homewood Ave, Homewood IL When: Saturday, January 23 at 7:30pm Cost: $15.00 includes all you can eat pizza with choice of 5 varieties, salad and soda. Alcohol and other food and drinks are pay on your own.

Plan on attending? Please send a $15 check payable to the Nomad Ski Club to my address, or see me at a meeting. Call or text with questions. Send checks in promptly- no dilly dallying

Thank you, Mark

I was thrilled with the number of people we had at the Christmas Party. Based on what I saw, a great time was had by all. Everyone was generous with toys for An Angel’s Touch and gifts for the Manteno Veteran’s Home. An Angel’s Touch assists families in need for the Holidays by providing toys, clothing, food and decorations. They reach out to family and friends to help by adopting a child. Over 20 years ago, Don and I began adopting one little girl every year and I have continued that tradi- tion. The toys donated by the Nomads are used for children who have not been adopted or fam- ilies who have experienced a tragedy. It is not unusual for them to receive a call on Christmas Eve to help a family and our donations help them respond. And as usual, we also collected a lot of gifts for the Manteno Veteran’s Home. It is so nice to know that we are helping those that have served our Country. We had our first annual Ugly Sweater Contest and the winners received certificates for Rokwelz Bar and Grill. First Place: Pat Brayley SecondPlace: Vicki and Ed Mullarkey Third Place: Bob Ballard

Thanks to those who helped with the set up and clean up. And thanks to Full Circle for keeping us on our feet dancing with great music. A special thanks to Pat Monahan who delivered the toys to An Angel’s Touch and Pam Bremer for delivering the Veteran’s gifts. Mark your calendars for the Nomad’s 55th Anniversary dance which will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, 2016. It seems like only yesterday we had our 50th anniversary dance. The party will be held at the Chateau Del Mar. We are going to be limited on the number of tickets we sell as we have a smaller room so keep your eyes out for more details. That’s it for now. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please email me at [email protected] . Debbie

Benches on the Avenue Call to Artists

For the past 12 years, Tinley Park’s Benches on the Avenue public art project has been well received by the community; has generated local resident and tourist interest, and has promoted an appreciation of the arts. For the 13th year, we will once again be placing 20 handcrafted wooden benches along Oak Park Avenue in Downtown Tinley Park. They will be on display from mid- May to September 30th. Each bench will be sponsored by a local business or individual who will take possession of the bench on September 30th.

Heather is looking for Nomads who are interested in getting together to make a bench for downtown Tinley Park. She would submit the application once there is a commitment from volunteers to help with this project. The Nomads could get their name out to hundreds of people who come out to see all the benches. It's free advertising if our club gets picked. We could reach out to all ages. This is a great way for our artistic and not so artistic members to get together and have a great time while supporting the club and community.

If interested, contact Heather at #708-439-6258 or email [email protected] The website with all the details is: http://www.tinleypark.org/DocumentCenter/View/3028

Best Wishes for a Happy Healthy New Year

13 A Little News from the Webmaster I have been working hard on our Nomad shirts. As we enter the 2015/16 ski season I wish I would have start- ed this process in September. With that said, I plan to have a tight deadline on shirt orders. The shirts will be made through Underground Printing in Evanston, IL. There will be a lot of different styles of shirts with the same logos available. There should be something for everyone. The logos are the same so we can meet our minimum order of 25 shirts. I can’t see any reason we should not be able to meet that with the interest I have seen. In addition I plan to buy 2 myself. Please spread the word to fellow Nomad’s who may not use the com- puter. All orders will be done through the computer . The store Underground Printing is putting it together for us. For those that do not use the computer, I hope that friends and family can help them order Nomad gear.

The store will be open on the web January 5st 2016 and will be open until January 11, 2015. Watch for an email from [email protected] with the “how to order” information on or before Jan 5th. After that week the store comes down and there will be no more orders taken. Payments will be taken via credit card through the underground printing website. Rest assured we have permission to use all these logos on our shirt. The logos will be similar to this on all shirts both front and back.
