It has been extraordinary to see our Lord at work through this ministry. We are indeed part of a God-inspired mission. He has provided us with more Scripture funds than ever before. As a result, over 91.8 million people have received God’s Word — a record number reached in one year. Often, that Scripture a man, woman, or child received was accompanied by a word of witness from the Gideon or Auxiliary providing it. A LIFE OF Sharing Scriptures is an integral part of what we do; however, we strive to do much more. We must stay focused on our primary goal and objective of reaching a lost and dying world with the glorious news that Jesus — and only Jesus — saves. In addition to sharing God’s Word, we need to be associating together with MINISTRY one another to serve and more effectively support this unique calling. Most importantly, we each should pray for boldness to personally witness at every God-given opportunity.     360° DEALS: AN INDUSTRY REACTION TO THE DEVALUATION OF RECORDED MUSIC SARA KARUBIAN* I. INTRODUCTION In October of 2007, Radiohead released In Rainbows without a record label. The band’s contract with record company EMI had been fulfilled in 2003, and Radiohead did not bother finding a new deal as they began recording their seventh album.1 Radiohead then made the album available at www.inrainbows.com, where fans were instructed to “pay-what-you- want” for the digital download.2 Shortly after the album’s release, the band’s front man, Thom Yorke, said “I like the people at our record company, but the time is at hand when you have to ask why anyone needs one. And, yes, it probably would give us some perverse pleasure to say ‘F___ you’ to this decaying business model.”3 It was no surprise that Radiohead received critical acclaim for the artistic merits of the album,4 or that millions of fans found a way to acquire the music. Its financial success, however, was less predictable. Radiohead declined to release statistics related to its pay-what-you-want model, but a conservative estimate suggests that the band’s profits from this digital release exceeded six and a half million.5 Furthermore, when Radiohead contracted with iTunes and a distributor to sell the album on iTunes and in stores, its high sales pushed it to the top of traditional album charts6 in early * J.D.     To: Morning Edition From: Mark Seeley Re: Topics for MPR's Morning Edition, Friday, January 2, 2004 Topic: A Brief History of Snow Shoveling Bernard Mergen in his recent book, "Snow in America" recounts the history of the snow shovel. As early as 1870, a patent was granted to William Wentworth of Seneca Falls, NY for a snow shovel with a riveted metal tip for scrapping. In 1889 a Lydia Fairweather applied for a patent on a snow shovel that had both attachable scrapper and scooper. The snow scooper, sometimes called a yooper scooper, is a large bucket shaped shovel with sides. It is a common snow removal device in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and in Maine, where 100 to 200 inches of snow occurs most winters. The first plastic snow shovel patent was granted to a Robert Smith of New Jersey in 1939. These are by far the most popular sold today, many with metal tips for scrapping. Often times, shorter handle versions are carried in the trunks of cars for emergency use. In the past three decades, snowblowers and snow throwers have replaced the use of snow shovels for many areas of the country. As a result perhaps the number of heart attacks has been reduced, but on the other hand there are still the occasional serious accidents with these snow removal machines.
