At three locations in the lows between linear sand banks o¡ the French coast an un-described small Chaetopterus sp. occurred with small Lanice conchilega as an enriched sediment stabilizing biotope. This biotope was distinct though having similarities to other tide swept sub-tidal biotopes dominated by L. conchilega. Using cameras and side-scan sonar it was seen to overlay heterogeneous cobbles and shell hash with intermittent rippled sand veneer. The patchiness of this enriching biogenic feature contributed to the variability in trawl catches of ¢sh. Sea bottom was found muddy with high similarity in animal community between stations. Animal community found at Eyrarhlíð was predominantly made of common species found in fjord ecosystems in the Westfjords. Polychaetes were the predominant species with Levinsenia gracilis most abundant and good presence of species from the Maldanidae family (Euchone sp. and Galathowenia oculata). Shannon-Wiener diversity index (loge) resulted under 3 for all stations. AMBI classified the site as slightly disturbed. Considering farming was never done in proximity to this site we assume other natural conditions affect the diversity in this area. Visual and chemical parameters did not show any signs of organic impact. -

Husemann* * Biologische Anstalt Helgoland (Meeresstation); D-27483 Helgoland, Federal Republic of Germany ABSTRACT: The purpose of this work is to provide the means of identifying the planktonic larvae of the polychaete species appearing in the plankton around the island of Helgoland (North Sea). During a three-year survey in this area, the larvae of 54 species out of 24 families belonging to the orders Orbiniida, Spionida, Capitelhda, Phyllodocida, Oweniida, Terebelhda, Sabelhda and the former Archiannelida have been recorded. Illustrated keys to the families, genera and species are presented. To facilitate the identification, additional descriptions and information about the seasonal appearance of the species are given. INTRODUCTION More than 13 000 species of polychaetous annelids take part in the marine benthos communities worldwide. Their distribution, species composition and population density are monitored within various benthos surveys. For the North Sea, especially the German Bight and the Wadden Sea, much information about the benthic polychaete fauna is available (Caspers, 1950; Stripp, 1969; DSrjes, 1977; Rachor & Gerlach, 1978; Gillandt, 1979; Salzwedel et al., 1985; Rachor, 1990; Bosselmann, 1991; Kr6ncke, 1991). In contrast, the holoplanktonic polychaete species and the meroplanktonic polychaete larvae, which are only part of the plankton during a more or less expanded phase of their ontogenesis, have never received much attention. Meroplanktonic polychaete larvae are seldomly recorded during studies monitoring the North Sea plankton (Smidt, 1951; Giere, 1968; Fransz, 1981; Bosselmann, 1989; Belgrano et al., 1990). -

The specimens are small, with a body length of 6.4 mm to 15.4 mm. Among a total of 10 described species of Lagis, L. crenulatus sp. nov., and L. abranchiata (Fauvel, 1932) are the only two without thoracic branchiae. Lagis crenulatus sp. nov., can be distinguished from L. abranchiata by having crenulated rather than knobbed margins in the scaphe, and lacking a pair of dorsal elongated pads on the third segment. Key words: Taxonomy, polychaete, Lagis crenulatus, new species, Hong Kong Introduction Pectinariids are commonly found in soft-bottom samples around the world. They are a family of polychaetes with several unique morphological characteristics. They live in a cone-shaped sandy tube made by them, therefore are often called “ice-cream cone worms”. Their first segment bears two bundles of stout golden chaetae (paleae) and a cephalic veil. Their posterior body section, the scaphe, bears spine-like chaetae forming an arch on both sides (Fauvel 1953; Ushakov 1955; Imajima & Hartman 1964; Day 1967). There has been some confusion in the generic designation in this family (Hartman 1941; Hutchings, 2000). -
