27 June 2013 Mr John Brouder Chief Executive of NELFT Trust Head Office Goodmayes Barley Lane, IG3 8XJ Dear Mr Brouder, Heronwood and Galleon Wards at Wanstead Hospital At the 7 March Redbridge Health Scrutiny Committee meeting, we requested information about what was happening about the two rehabilitation wards named above. At their 30 May visit, the Health Scrutiny Committee was told that 14 of the 46 beds were planned for closure. We also gather that 4 or 5 beds have been closed recently, while the Wanstead and Woodford Guardian states that the Redbridge CCG spokesman said that a shake-up of rehabilitation services was under consideration.

As you know, no beds can be closed without a formal public consultation being held before any action is taken. Therefore we are asking for details of the current rehabilitation model,

particularly bed allocations and how this would affect Wanstead Hospital in order that our community can be involved. At the 12 June Redbridge Health Scrutiny Committee John Powell, Director of Adult Social Services and Housing, said that beds could be closed as part of “efficiency saving” without having a consultation. We refute this argument: if this were so then all cuts could be included in this way and consultation would cease. Temporary closures were also discussed at the meeting. While we recognise that it is sensible to close beds on occasions if demand falls, this is not the same as permanent bed closures. If it is felt that temporary bed closures ought to be made permanent, then a public consultation is needed. A similar letter will be sent Mr Connor Burke, the Accountable Officer for Redbridge CCG.

Yours sincerely,
