On Friday, October 22, 1999, the Art Gallery opened a new exhibit consisting of pieces from Edward and Natalie Coleman ' s collection. Mr. Coleman graduated in 1949 from the Pennsylvania Military College (the pre cursor to Widener). Many alumni and old friends of the Colemans were pre sent at the gala. The collection of art is eclectic. Lithographs, oils on canvas, wood engravings, and drawings from the likes of Ben Shahn, Max Weber, Salvador Dali, Georg Grosz, and 'Alexander Calder adorn the walls of Widener's Art Gallery. This lifelong compilation con tains examples from many schools of 20th century art; there are works by American and Mexican painters as well as examples of French Impressionism and German expressionism. The Colemans began purchasing art during the 1950s in New York City, and they continued collecting until the 1970s. Along the way, they became familiar with many different artists and l/lIempt.oved, George Grosz (German! 1:.{lj3-! 959) auctioneers, and they developed an acu ity for art.
