DRESS LIKE A PILGRIM A Procurement Guide SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 THE MAYFLOWER GUARD General Society of Mayflower Descendants Dress Like a Pilgrim A Procurement Guide By Mayflower Guard As James Baker, noted Pilgrim historian, points out in his recent article in the Mayflower Journal 1 there is a major image problem associated with what clothing and apparel Pilgrims wore. The image of black clothing, buckles and blunderbusses persist in the public mind. To overcome this misperception and to assist in this effort to change public perceptions, the donning of appropriate garments representing what the Pilgrims actually wore should be a major objective for the commemoration of the 1 Baker, James W., Pilgrim Images III, Mayflower Journal Vol. 2, No. 1 [2017], pp 7-19 1 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Mayflower. We the Mayflower descendants need to Dress Like a Pilgrim and wear Pilgrim Appropriate Apparel (PAA). So, what did Pilgrim men and women wear? Fabrics In 17th Century England and in the Netherlands, there were two basic fabrics that were used for clothing, wool and linen. There was combination of wool and linen know has fustian corduroy that was also used, however finding this fabric today is almost impossible. Cotton while available was very rare and very expensive in the early 17th century. Colors We know that the Pilgrims wore a variety of colors in their clothing from probate records where the color of various clothing items were mentioned including the colors violet, blue, green.1,2 The color red was also listed. However, the reds that were used in the early 17th century were more of a brick red and a matter red which is a little more orange in nature than modern reds. -

Introduction to European Women’s Short Cloaks of the 16th and Early 17th Centuries Annaka Poznanska Dragon’s Laire Scholar 2021 mka: Anita Taylor [email protected] 206.369.2231 EUROPEAN WOMEN’S 16TH AND 17TH CENTURY SHORT CLOAKS 2 Abstract The purpose of this paper is to introduce the short cloak as worn by 16th and early 17th century women. The paper begins with a brief history of the short cloak prior to the 16th century. It continues with an overview of short cloaks by selected geographic region, comparing visual characteristics from period art and period tailor’s patterns, for both women and men. This paper does not contain information about ecclesiastical cloaks or other cloak-like vestments worn by priests, nuns, and other members of religious orders during this time period. EUROPEAN WOMEN’S 16TH AND 17TH CENTURY SHORT CLOAKS 3 Introduction My goal for this research was to learn about women’s short cloaks in this time period, and to start adding them to my SCA wardrobe. I was inspired by a class that I took: Master Charles de Bourbon’s Fur Master Class, as well as my desire to reproduce this stunning Hungarian 16th century silk fur-lined short cloak and matching gown. Passion for Fashion (103) Mon, 20th Nov 2017 GMT/BST Lot 101 Estimate: £40000 - £60000 + Fees A rare crimson velvet jerkin, circa 1610-25, short-waisted with slight graduation to front, the shoulder wings and hem with tabbed edges adorned with wine silk and gold thread plaited braid, the graduated stand collar interlined with heavy buckram, the main jerkin interlined with natural un-bleached linen, curved back seams and two lines of braid to the back, silver-gilt wrapped acorn shaped buttons, the hem tabs and collar lined in crimson silk, chest 102cm, 42in; together with purpose-made mount (2) An additional 5% VAT is payable on the hammer price, this can be refunded if proof of export outside the EU is provided within 6 months of the sale date. Provenance: The Helen Larson Private Collection Published: The Journal of the Costume Society, no 5, 1971, 'A Study of Three Jerkins' by Janet Arnold - the renowned scholar of early dress. Few specimens of late 16th or early 17th century costume survive. The jerkin as a garment was worn to protect the rich doublet worn below, and to provide extra warmth or protection. Utilitarian or military examples were made in leather - but this example in the finest Italian velvet must have belonged to a man of great wealth and importance. The shortness of the waist and slightly curved silhouette served to emphasise the well-rounded belly of its owner - a desirable fashionable attribute in the early 17th century. Records suggest that the piece was acquired by Helen Larson from a dealer in Connecticut in 1968 but no earlier provenance has been found.. -

The Details of English Fashions of the Sixteenth Century: Men’s Clothing Examined by Decade by Margaret Roe Also published online at http://www.margaretroedesigns.com/fashions.html © 2010 1 Overview 1500s Shirts, cuffs and collars The shirt of the 1500s was full in the body, gathered into the neckline, sometimes with a narrow collar and sometimes into a scoop-neckline. The sleeves are unseen, but are probably either gathered into a small cuff or simply hemmed. Blackwork is not yet seen at the edges of men's shirts. Breeches Breeches of this decade continued to be the joined hose and codpiece of the fifteenth century. Doublets and jerkins Both doublets and jerkins are worn at this time. The doublet usually had a narrow standing collar, no more than 1" high, whereas the jerkin had a low, round neckline. Both had long skirts, extending to the knees, and both were simplify trimmed. Sleeves Sleeves are often difficult to see under the overgown, but appear to be of two common styles: either narrow but loose sleeves, or narrow to just above the elbow and full to the shoulder, possibly stuffed or padded to maintain a full shape. Sleeves usually matched the doublet or jerkin and were probably sewn into it. Over garments Finally, overgowns are seen in most portraits. These gowns fall either to mid-calf or to the ankles. They most often have very full, long sleeves, but occasionally, the sleeves are only elbow-length or are turned back over the elbows. The collar is turned back around the neck to reveal a different colored lining, which was sometimes fur. -

Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center.
