Legislation we supported:

Our endorsed candidates introduced many bills which would have protected students from harassment, required pharmacies to fill valid prescriptions for contraception, and improved sex education and parental consent regulations. Our forward thinking members of the legislature also promoted legislation that would have limited deceptive practices of so- called crisis pregnancy centers, allowed nurse practitioners to perform critical women’s health procedures and all practitioners to utilize telemedicine. Finally, champions of women’s health care also tried to improve regulations related to waiting periods and rape victims.

Sadly, none of these bills even received a hearing, due to our current legislative leadership’s intransigence on any issue related to women’s sexual and reproductive health. The current leadership of our legislature is dominated by extreme ideological groups pursuing a narrow social agenda. They do not reflect the will of most Arizona citizens. Our endorsed candidates represent courageous leadership and commonsense compromise to create better health outcomes for Arizona women and their families.

Legislation we opposed: × SB1062 – Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) – Senator Yarbrough Proponents argued that this bill would provide two much-needed updates to Arizona’s RFRA statute. The bill provided that the definition of “person” include all types of businesses and legal entities. The bill also ensured that a government enactment is not permitted to infringe on religious belief merely because the enactment allows for enforcement by a private individual. Vetoed by Governor Brewer 2-26-2014

× HB 2284 – Women’s Health Protection Act – Representative Lesko Proponents maintained that this bill put the safety standards that apply to abortion clinics on the same level as all other health-care institutions by allowing for potential violations to be inspected by the Department of Health Services or a designee without a warrant. Additionally, this bill made it a misdemeanor to help a minor avoid Arizona’s parental consent requirements and obtain an abortion. HB2284 requires that abortion clinics report whenever an infant is born alive during the abortion process and report what steps were taken to save that child’s life. Signed into law 4-15-2014

× HB 2196 – Election Law Amendments, Repeals laws 2013, chapter 209 - Representative Farnsworth The amendments:  Added strict compliance to requirements for initiatives, referenda, and recalls  Prohibited the collection of early ballots by a political committee or volunteer  Assessed a criminal penalty for a violation  Removed registrants for the Permanent Early Voting List under certain circumstances  Amended the number of signatures required for nomination petitions Signed into law 2-27-2014
