Exciting Offerings Coming to Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea in Fiscal Year 2019 URAYASU, CHIBA— Tokyo Disneyland® Park and Tokyo DisneySea® Park announced their annual schedule for fiscal year 2019 (April 1, 2019 – March 31, 2020). The two Parks will continue to offer Guests distinctive, Disney-style experiences over the upcoming year with a variety of new entertainment, special events and programs. Please see below for more details. Opening July 23, 2019 New Attraction at Tokyo DisneySea Soaring: Fantastic Flight This major attraction will open at Logo for Mediterranean Harbor in Tokyo DisneySea. Soaring: Fantastic Flight at Tokyo DisneySea Based on the popular attraction, Soarin’ Around the World, which has been enjoyed by Guests visiting the Disney parks outside Japan, the attraction at Tokyo DisneySea will feature original scenes and the newest visual images. Guests who visit this attraction overlooking Mediterranean Harbor will be able to go on a journey soaring over famous landscapes of the world, while experiencing the breezes and Exterior of scents that match the various scenes. Soaring: Fantastic Flight at Tokyo DisneySea Note: Soaring: Fantastic Flight is presented by SHINRYO CORPORATION. Through April 26, 2019 Nighttime Spectacular at Tokyo Disneyland “Celebrate! Tokyo Disneyland” This nighttime spectacular, which premiered on July 10, 2018 as part of “Tokyo Disney Resort 35th ‘Happiest Celebration!’” will come to an end on April 26, 2019. With Cinderella Castle as the stage, Mickey Mouse takes Guests on a magical, musical “Celebrate! Tokyo Disneyland” journey around Tokyo Disneyland. © Disney © Disney/Pixar © & TM Lucasfilm Ltd. This show features an original story in a rousing live performance with impressive projection “Song of Mirage” mapping. at Tokyo DisneySea Note: With the introduction of this new show, “Out of Shadowland,” currently presented at Hangar Stage, will close on March 31, 2019. From October 14, 2019 New Dance Program for Kids at Tokyo Disneyland “Jamboree Mickey” This new dance program in front of Cinderella Castle invites younger Guests to learn some new moves with Mickey and Friends. Participating children can have fun dancing around with the Disney Pals to music based on the well-loved “Mickey Mouse March.” “Jamboree Mickey!” Tokyo Disneyland Through March 25, 2020 Nighttime Entertainment at Tokyo DisneySea “Fantasmic!” This nighttime entertainment, which premiered on April 28, 2011 will come to an end on March 25, 2020. Taking place on the waters of Mediterranean Harbor, this spectacular entertainment features Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice who creates a fantastic world of Disney through his powers of imagination. “Fantasmic!” Tokyo Disneyland Note: “Fantasmic!” is presented by NTT DOCOMO, Inc. July 9 – September 1, 2019 Special Event at Tokyo Disneyland “Donald’s Hot Jungle Summer” This exciting summer event will be presented with a brand new theme of a colorful jungle, and will feature a stage show after dark in front of Cinderella Castle for the first time in six years. Donald Duck and the Disney Friends entertain Guests in this thrilling performance enhanced with tons of spraying water and fire. “Donald’s Hot Jungle Summer” at Tokyo Disneyland Special Event at Tokyo DisneySea “Disney Pirates Summer” This special event brings the world of the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean film series to Tokyo DisneySea. At Mediterranean Harbor, Guests can enjoy a show featuring Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Barbossa and their motley crew of pirates, as well as a variety of atmosphere entertainment presented throughout the Park. The pirate theme is also the inspiration for special merchandise, menu items and decorations, transforming Tokyo DisneySea into a swashbuckling world of pirate “Disney Pirates Summer” fun! at Tokyo DisneySea September 10 – October 31, 2019 Special Event at Tokyo Disneyland / Tokyo DisneySea “Disney Halloween” Each Park will offer in its own unique way a “Disney Halloween” event. At Tokyo Disneyland, the special event will be themed to a “ghost version of Tokyo Disneyland.” Halloween ghosts will welcome Guests to their spooky version of the Park. The special event at Tokyo DisneySea will feature a brand new theme, presenting a cool, but eerie Halloween atmosphere throughout the Park. The Christmas event at Tokyo DisneySea will feature a splendid, colorful revue presented at Mediterranean Harbor. Guests will be enchanted with live performances that create a wonderful holiday mood unique to Tokyo DisneySea. Note: “One Man's Dream II － The Magic Lives On,” currently presented at Showbase, will close on December 13, 2019. Special Event at Tokyo DisneySea “Pixar Playtime” This special event will give Guests a variety of experiences themed to the world of DisneyPixar films. Guests of all ages will be able to enjoy their favorite DisneyPixar Characters in entertainment programs around the Park.     Essay Te x t Celia Pearce NARRATIVE ENVIRONMENTS From Disneyland to World of Warcraft In 1955, Walt Disney opened what many regard as the first-ever theme park in Anaheim, California, 28 miles southeast of Los Angeles. In the United States, vari- ous types of attractions had enjoyed varying degrees of success over the preceding 100 years. From the edgy and sometimes scary fun of the seedy seaside boardwalk to the exuberant industrial futurism of the World’s Fair to the “high” culture of the museum, middle class Americans had plenty of amusements. More than the mere celebrations of novelty, technology, entertainment and culture that preceded it, Disneyland was a synthesis of architecture and story (Marling 1997). It was a revival of narrative architecture, which had previously been reserved for secular functions, from the royal tombs of Mesopotamia and Egypt to the temples of the Aztecs to the great cathedrals of Europe. Over the centuries, the creation of narrative space has primarily been the pur- view of those in power; buildings whose purpose is to convey a story are expensive to build and require a high degree of skill and artistry. Ancient “imagineers” shared some of the same skills as Disney’s army of creative technologists: they understood light, space flow, materials and the techniques of illusion; they could make two dimensions appear as three and three dimensions appear as two; they understood the power of scale, and they developed a highly refined vocabulary of expressive techniques in the service of awe and illusion (Klein 2004). Like the creators of Disney- land, they built synthetic worlds, intricately planned citadels often set aside from the day-to-day bustle of emergent, chaotic cities or serving as a centerpiece of es- cape within them.

Theoretically building upon such works regarding utopian visons (Bregman, 2017, e.g., Claeys 2011;) and Disney studies (Garlen and Sandlin, 2016; Fjellman, 1992), this work combines historiography and speculative essays as its methodologies. In addition, this project explores how schools must do the hard work of working toward building a better future (Chomsky and Foucault, 1971). Through tracing the evolution of EPCOT as an idea for a community that would “always be in the state of becoming” to EPCOT Center as an inspirational theme park, this work contends that those ideas contain possibilities for how to interject utopian thought in schooling.

    Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World Resort Fact Sheet Description: Cinderella Castle pays homage to the beloved story and characters from Disney’s 12th full-length animated feature film, “Cinderella,” which was released in theaters in 1950. Painted in traditional colors of grey, blue, and gold, the castle represents a romantic conception of a French palace-fortress. While the base of the castle resembles a medieval fortress typifying the Romanesque architecture and castles of the 11th through 13th centuries, the upper portion of the castle reflects the stately Gothic forms that were prominent in later centuries. Opening Date: October 1, 1971 Castle Height: 189 feet (tallest structure in Magic Kingdom Park) Construction: Cinderella Castle took approximately 18 months to build and was completed in July, 1971. The castle is made of concrete, steel, cement, plaster, and fiberglass. No bricks were used in the construction. The inner castle is structural steel covered with fiberglass. The foundation is concrete filled with foam for weight conservation Cinderella’s Royal Table: A circular stairwell or a themed elevator transports guests to Cinderella’s Royal Table, the elegant restaurant located on the second level of the castle where guests can meet Cinderella and some of her princess friends. Hosts and Hostesses address younger guests as “princes” or “princesses,” while adult guests are addressed as “lords” or “ladies.” Fun facts: For inspiration, Walt Disney Imagineering researchers turned to the famous palaces of Charles Perrault’s France, still showplaces of Europe. Their design took the form of a romanticized composite of such courts as Fontainebleau, Versailles, and a dozen famed chateaux of the Loire Valley.
