Kings County Recreation Guide - Summer 2014 | 5 IT’S SUMMER TIME ...NOT SIZZLE TIME BY: SUN SAFE NOVA SCOTIA

Get the most enjoyment from your summer recreational activities by practicing sun safety. Nobody enjoys getting a sun burn! In the short term – it can be painful and really takes the fun out of your day. In the long- run, over-exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can put you at risk for developing skin cancer.

Research shows that over 50% of Canadians get their worst sunburn while watching or PROTECT participating in outdoor recreational activities. Source: National Sun Survey Highlights YOURSELF BY: Report (July 2008)

• Knowing the UV Index and planning accordingly • Wearing sunglasses that protect your eyes • Seeking shade • Wearing clothing that covers your arms and legs and a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck. • Applying a broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) on all exposed skin 20 minutes before going outdoors. Reapplying every 2 hours, especially after swimming or perspiring.

6 | Kings County Recreation Guide - Summer 2014 BOAT & WATER SAFETY For many families, summer includes activities such as boating and swimming. Use these tips to have a fun, cool, and safe summer when around water.

Drownings are Preventable! Keep your children within arms’ reach when you are in or near the water. Never underestimate the power of currents! Someone who underestimates the power of currents can be swept away instantly. Open water is very different than a swimming pool- deceiving distances, undertows, cold water, waves, currents and drop offs are all possible hazards. Swim in guarded and marked areas to avoid these hazards! Wear a PFD or lifejacket! A proper fitting PFD or lifejacket is key for being water smart this summer. Find one that fits your and your child’s height and weight. To ensure the best fit, raise the shoulders of the device: if it goes over your ears it’s too big!

Always swim with a buddy! When going swimming or boating, make sure you bring a friend. It’s more fun with someone, and you will have someone there if something happens. It is also important to make sure you tell a friend or family member when you are going somewhere and what time you will be back. Check the weather before going out! Winds and wave frequently come up suddenly. It helps to check the weather forecast before going out to make sure you are prepared for the day! Alcohol and Boating Do NOT Mix! Just like you wouldn’t drink and drive a car, do not drink and drive a boat. Lifejackets or PFDs are needed for everyone on the boat. Make sure you have some of the following on the boat: first aid kit, drinking water, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, snacks, rope, knife.
