• In light of the very strong flu strain which is hitting our area, Bishop Arthur Serratelli recently communicated to us the following liturgical guidelines and suggestions for the duration of the flu season. First, the Bishop has suspended the distribution of Holy Communion under the form of wine for the duration of the flu season. In addition, the Bishop makes the following suggestions: a) If you are feeling sick, stay home. There is no obligation to attend Mass if you are sick; b) the most sanitary way of receiving Holy Communion is in the hand, rather than on the tongue; c) if you are uncomfortable shaking hands at the Sign of Peace, you are under no obligation to do so - a nod of the head or a wave of the hand is sufficient; d) no one is under any obligation to hold hands during the Our Father.

• Women of high school or college age are welcome to An Evening with Sisters - an evening of conversation, prayer, food and fun on Friday, February 23 from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Morris Catholic High School, 200 Morris Avenue, Denville. To RSVP attendance, please contact Sister Bernadette McCauley at [email protected].

• This weekend we offer the Blessing of Throats in honor of Blaise (whose feastday is Saturday) after all the Masses. is one of those early about whom we know very little. He is said to have been Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia at the beginning of the fourth century, and to have been martyred under the persecution of Diocletian around the year 316. There is virtually no historical information about him, but two long-standing legends explain his invocation by those suffering from ailments of the throat. One story has Blaise, while in prison, curing a young boy with a fishbone struck in his throat. The other story involves a woman, in gratitude for his having rescued one of her animals from a wolf, visiting him in prison with food and tapers to alleviate the gloomy darkness. Hence, the traditional use of candles during the blessing. In the Middle Ages, especially in , Blaise became part of a group of saints - the - who were invoked as a group against many various forms of common ailments and afflictions (e.g. St. Barbara against lightning, St. against epilepsy, etc.). Of these, only Saint Blaise remains popular today - perhaps because of the persistence of sore throats and the common cold, especially around his feastday. If you ever have the chance to visit the beautiful medieval city of on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, Saint Blaise is the patron of the city, and the blessing of throats is offered continuously in the cathedral there.

• Monsignor Martin McDonnell, who served as Saint Anthony's ninth Pastor in 2009-2011, will be celebrating his 50th Anniversary of Ordination this Spring. There are two identical celebrations planned, both featuring a 12:00 Noon Mass followed by a reception in the parish hall. The first is Sunday, June 3 at Good Shepherd Church in Andover, and the second is Sunday, June 10 at Saint Ann's Church, Parsippany. For questions or more information, contact [email protected].

• February 2 in the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, commemorated in the fourth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary, as well as in a window on the Washington Avenue side of our church. The day is also known as Day, because of the medieval custom of blessing candles for use in the church throughout the year on that day.

3

For many years now, the feast has also been observed as World Day of Prayer for those in Consecrated Life. It is a day for men and women in religious vows to renew their commitment. Perhaps we might join them in prayer over these days.

God our Father, we thank you calling men and women to serve in your Son's Kingdom, as sisters, brothers, and religious priests, consecrated virgins and hermits, as well as members of Secular Institutes.

Renew their knowledge and love oj you, and send your Holy Spirit to help them respond generously and courageously to your will.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, ever and ever. Amen.

God bless you all,

Father Ray

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said: ‘Everyone is looking for you.’ He said to them, ‘Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come’. So he went into their synagogues preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.”

Jesus the healer, Jesus the pray-er, Jesus the preacher and teacher. A few verses capture His ministry and message that He offers. Fast forward and the need is the same: ‘everyone is looking for you.’

Many are looking for fame, comfort, riches, but not for what Jesus has brought. We are called to help them find the Lord who means so much to us. Who is it that has fallen away from the church? They are still loved by the Lord. Who do I know caught in a bad habit, a vice, or depression? They are still loved by the Lord.

What they need is someone who looked for the Lord, has found Him and wishes to share that same positive experience with them. As I live my conviction and faith, I bring Him to them, and they to Him.
