ABSTRACT AN EERIE JUNLGE FILLED WITH DRAGONFLIES, SNIPER BULLETS AND GHOSTS: CHANGING PERCEPTIONS OF VIETNAM AND THE VIETNAMESE THROUGH THE EYES OF AMERICAN TROOPS MAY 2015 MATTHEW MARTIN HERRERA, B.A., HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY M.A., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST DIRECTED BY: PROFESSOR CHRISTIAN APPY This thesis examines the changing perceptions of Vietnam’s landscape and the Vietnamese in the eyes of American troops throughout the Vietnam War. Throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Vietnamese were depicted as a people misguided by the French and in need of political mobilization by the American media and government. Following heavy investment and a rigged election in 1956, South Vietnam was painted as a beacon of democracy in Southeast Asia and an example of what American aid is capable of. As an increasing American military presence was being established in South Vietnam in the early 1960s, American troops were reminded by pocket books and other forms of American propaganda that South Vietnam was a land of dignity and respect. At first, troops were shocked by the beauty of the landscape and recalled that Vietnam did not look like a war-torn country at all. Yet as the land became increasingly devastated due to defoliant and numerous bombings, the perceptions of the Vietnamese took a turn for the worst; eventually being subhuman and deceptive. Vietnam’s landscape became perceived as a land of death where youth was expendable. However, less than a decade after the United States had pulled out of Vietnam, veterans and those affected by the war vi begin to return in mass numbers constituting the largest population of Americans in Vietnam. "While the colorful space competition held the forefront of public atten- tion," Hohenberg remarks, "the trained diplomatic correspondents of the major newspa- pers and wire services in the West carried on almost alone the difficult and unpopular East- West negotiations to achieve atomic control and regulation and reduction of armaments. The public seemed to want to ignore the hard fact that rockets capable of boosting people into orbit for prolonged periods could also deliver atomic warheads to any part of the earth. It continued, therefore, to be the task of the responsible press to assign competent and highly trained correspondents to this forbidding subject. They did not have the glamor of TV or the excitement of a space shot to focus public attention on their work. Theirs was the responsibility of obliging editors to publish material that was complicated and not at all easy for an indifferent public to grasp. It had to be done by abandoning the familiar cliches of journalism in favor of the care and the art of the superior historian .. On such an assignment, no correspondent was a 'foreign' correspondent. The term was outdated.

Since Vietnam was the “living-room war,” played out on the nightly news, this documentary doesn’t show us the fighting with new eyes, the way “The War” did with its unearthed archival World War II footage.

In addition to a distinguished news- paper career, which itself merits this award, Betsy is enshrined in history as a leading member of the group of brave and intrepid women who challenged The New York Times for its treatment of female employees. That effort, which developed into a precedent-setting 1974 class action suit, Elizabeth Boylan, et. al. vs. The New York Times, reverberated far beyond the confines of the paper’s offices, then lo- cated on West 43rd Street. Publishers and editors around the country began thinking that if the august Times could be accused of treating its women staffers improperly, perhaps they had better re-evaluate their own behavior. Slowly, and sometimes painfully, the tide began to turn toward greater equality, a movement that still hasn’t been fully achieved. Betsy and her six other named plaintiffs deserve appre- ciation from the generations of women journalists past, present and future, who have benefited, and will benefit, from their courageous action.

    MWC Article Media, War & Conflict Media images of war 3(1) 7–41 © The Author(s) 2010 Reprints and permission: sagepub. co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav DOI: 10.1177/1750635210356813 Michael Griffin http://mwc.sagepub.com Macalester College, Saint Paul, MN, USA Abstract Photographic images of war have been used to accentuate and lend authority to war reporting since the early 20th century, with depictions in 1930s picture magazines of the Spanish Civil War prompting unprecedented expectations for frontline visual coverage. By the 1960s, Vietnam War coverage came to be associated with personal, independent and uncensored reporting and image making, seen as a journalistic ideal by some, and an obstacle to successful government conduct of the war by others. This article considers the idealized ‘myth’ of Vietnam War coverage and how it has influenced print and television photojournalism of American conflicts, skewing expectations of wartime media performance and fostering a consistent pattern of US Government/media collaboration. Upon analysis, pictorial coverage of US wars by the American media not only fails to live up to the myth of Vietnam but tends to be compliant and nationalist. It fails to reflect popular ideals of independent and critical photojournalism, or even the willingness to depict the realities of war.     West Page 1 Saigon Memories 1,905 words As a 1958 high school graduate without a firm grasp of a career, I decided to pass on college and cast my lot with Uncle Sam. I’d sent post cards of interest to all the services. Only the Marine Corps responded. I signed on the dotted line and went looking for adventure. During the next six years I found it - in spades. In February, 1962, I graduated with class number 1-62 at the Marine Security Guard School, Henderson Hall, Quantico, Virginia. The day we received our embassy assignments was memorable. As they called names off, I realized I wasn’t going to Lisbon, Paris, Stockholm, Athens, or anywhere else equally exotic and cool. Tom Mollick, LeRoy Vestal, and I were being sent to Saigon, and I didn’t even know where it was. I’d never heard of South Vietnam, though I was familiar with French Indo-China, a name which was offered as a reference point. I made a mad dash to the library and dug into whatever news magazines were available. What I read both chilled my spine and accelerated my pulse. “Holy s---,” I remember saying aloud, “there’s a shootin’ war going on over there!” Little did I know. After flying 9,003 miles, most of it by MATS (military air transport service and all of it facing the tail of the plane), with stopovers in San Francisco, Honolulu, and Guam, we landed at Clark AFB in the Philippine Islands. After a quick stopover in Manila to get our passports stamped with a Vietnam visa we boarded an Air France commercial airliner and continued.

Le Monde went to visit him and retraces the journey which led him from the gangs of London to his fame. Batcombe, Somerset (UK) - Special correspondents The photographer closes the door of his darkroom – the room of his “ghosts.” It is from there which they emerge, the “ghosts,” from a prefabricated cabin behind the house. They come from four immaculate white bins – developer, bath, fiXer and wash. Beside these are the enlargers, and on shelves there are reams of paper, all of which float in a putrid smell of potassium iodide. “You know that almost everything happens here, in this darkroom,” says Donald McCullin: siXty years of photography of which eighteen were devoted to war. “Soon, I’m going to get rid of all of it. I am at the end of my journey.” It is hard to believe. This man risked a thousand deaths in wars. In 2016 again, he was in Iraq. He was injured in Cambodia, beaten up in prisons in Idi Amin Dada. A price was put on his head in Lebanon. Rorabaugh, History This dissertation proceeds with two profoundly interwoven goals in mind: mapping the experience of women in the Vietnam War and evaluating the ways that ideas about women and gender influenced the course of American involvement in Vietnam. I argue that between 1954 and 1978, ideas about women and femininity did crucial work in impelling, sustaining, and later restraining the American mission in Vietnam. This project evaluates literal images such as photographs, film and television footage as well as images evoked by texts in the form of news reports, magazine articles, and fiction, focusing specifically on images that reveal deeply gendered ways of seeing and representing the conflict for Americans. Some of the images I consider include a French nurse known as the Angel of Dien Bien Phu, refugees fleeing for southern Vietnam in 1954, the first lady of the Republic of Vietnam Madame Nhu, and female members of the National Liberation Front. Juxtaposing images of American women, I also focus on the figure of the housewife protesting American atrocities in Vietnam and the use of napalm, and images wrought by American women intellectuals that shifted focus away from the military and toward the larger social and psychological impact of the war.
