Aspirations for the Future From wide discussion and the results of the Parish Audit, we would sum-up our aspirations as follows:

† We are a spiritual congregation and want to put God first and centre stage. We want to worship Him in many ways from the energetic, lively and outward expressions of faith to the more contemplative and reflective opportunities for prayer and discernment. We see ourselves as valuing a Gospel and Bible-centred ministry supported by intellectually stimulating and thoughtful sermons accessible to our various congregations. Our choirs and music are an important part of our worship and outreach. † We want parishioners to enjoy church life and have fun and we want to be seen as an optimistic and exciting Parish. We would like an increase in numbers of those going forward for lay and ordained ministry to reflect this. † Our active parishioners have a spread of ages and we want to encourage the young, build the families’ involvement and retain our older members. There is funding for a half-time lay or ordained youth and families pioneer post to assist this. † We wish to respond to the need for mission and pastoral support, both within our community and with the wider world and want to encourage more action in this area, especially within the new housing developments within our boundaries. † The five denominations of Christians Together in Emsworth work well together and meet regularly throughout the year. They are a potentially strong and influential group and we hope to strengthen relationships. † We want to maintain the diversity of our services, recognising their appeal also to people outside the confines of the Parish. † We will continue to bring together the congregations of our two churches, St Thomas à Becket and St James, both socially and in worship. † In general terms, there is little appetite for major change to present structures or routines described elsewhere in this Profile at least initially. † We hold the door always open to those who have left us.

We hope that candidates will be able to discern what personal attributes are necessary to advance the aspirations listed above and measure themselves accordingly. We do not intend to produce a list of characteristics for the ‘ideal’ incumbent, but only to say that it is the ability to achieve which is the measure of success

7. Our Buildings

St Thomas à Becket Church Lane, Warblington, Hampshire, PO9 2TU

Warblington Church of St Thomas à Becket stands alone in the fields with a farm and a council cemetery adjacent to it. It has the remains of Saxon stone and tiles in its spire and was originally a small building holding perhaps 50 people. It was extended westwards in the 13th century and now holds 150 comfortably in the ‘new’ nave. It was renovated in the 19th century and the stained glass dates from then; it is of high quality and remarkable. The churchyard is closed to new burials.

The organ is in good condition, and the church was reroofed in 1997. In 2011 the church suffered a fire caused by faulty wiring, which resulted in the destruction of the pulpit and one pew. There was extensive smoke staining and complete redecoration was needed.

The story of the fire can be found here: http://warblingtonwithemsworth.org/wp- content/uploads/2014/06/RestorationSum mary1.pdf

There is no chancel repair liability. The quinquennial of 2015 highlighted the need for relatively minor and routine repairs to the structure now, with the prospect of some stonework and heating upgrades in about five years. There is an induction hearing loop installed. The interior is not modernised; the traditional pews remain and there is no screen/PowerPoint capability although the audio system is effective.

Work planned for the near future includes an upgrade to the and PPPeeettt S SSeeerrrvvviicicceee the installation of a toilet in the grounds.

The church is open every day except Fridays and is visited for reflection and interest by many walkers and cemetery visitors. Its setting makes it popular for weddings from within and without the Parish and many funerals are held here prior to burial in the cemetery. Churchyard Teas in July and August are popular. CCChhhuuurrrccchhhyyyaaarrrddd T TTeeeaaasss Parking is available and free but the space is also used by farm vehicles, hearses and the previously mentioned walkers and visitors.

Altogether, it stands in a peaceful location and exudes a traditional, gentle and comforting ambience whilst people ebb and flow around it, engaged in countryside pursuits. It is a magnet for those desiring a traditional venue for baptisms, weddings and funerals and its average Sunday congregation over two services is 80. The BCP sits easily with CCChhhrrriisisstttmmaaasss L LLuuunnnccchhh this culture.

St James Church Path, Emsworth, PO10 7DP

The Church is in the northwest of Emsworth Village. The foundation stone was laid on St James’s day in 1839, hence it is many centuries younger than the church of St Thomas à Becket at Warblington. It seats about 400, which occurs a number of times a year. In 1985, to conform to contemporary liturgical practice, the altar was moved to the west end of the chancel enabling the celebrant to face RRRaaadddiioioo 4 44 A AAnnnyyy Q Quuueeessstttiioioonnnsss the congregation. Recent improvements have included the installation of new Audio Visual systems with an induction loop.

In addition to its use as a place of worship, St James is regularly used for a variety of church, Parish and secular activities including bible study and prayer groups, worship committee meetings and concerts. It is also used for public Parish meetings of a non- political nature and recently provided the venue for Radio 4’s ‘Any Questions?’ The churchyard is closed and no longer a burial ground.

The roof has recently been refurbished and work is planned for the west elevation and the open octagonal spires. The cast iron gutters and down pipes need refurbishment and the height of the balustrade in the gallery needs to be increased

9. Who Are We Looking For?

We hope you feel moved to apply for the post as our Rector of this Parish and its two congregations, so different in style but united in aim. When completing the application form, we would wish you to be enthusiastic in your approach and sympathetic to our aspirations shown in “Aspirations for the Future” in section 2 of this Profile. Perhaps by using those as a basis, you will discern the qualities we are looking for and indicate in your application form how your individual strengths, background and experience might be brought to bear in the appointment.

We appreciate that our recent history has resulted in a challenging environment, but we are thankful that we have been able to cope. The people of this Parish have an inner strength, a wealth of potential and a keenness to prove to themselves and to others just what they are capable of. We have an urge to move forward and upward, growing ourselves and our Parish to the greater glory of God.

We look forward to hearing how you might help lead us into our future.
