The aim and mission of the document is to give a full representation of the 1993 and 2005 child sexual abuse allegations against Michael Jackson. I felt it was much needed because there is still a lot of misinformation circulating about these cases and people often make judgements about them based on out of context cherry-picked half truths, incomplete information or even complete lies. Accordingly, the document consists of three main sections. The 1993 Allegations section, The 2005 Allegations section and a Frequently Asked Questions section that deals with questions that are not specifically in the realm of either the 1993 or the 2005 allegations but generally are related to the molestation allegations against Michael Jackson. (A separate PDF document about the posthumous Wade Robson allegations can be downloaded here.) If you truly want to understand these allegations you will have to invest a bit of time in reading. There is no real understanding of these cases in five minutes from media soundbites, out-of-context bits of information, inflammatory tabloid articles or Internet gossip, no matter how tempting it may be to jump to conclusions based on such. This document was created with the purpose of commentary, news reporting, education and research. It is not sold commercially, I do not have any income from it, I do not make any profit of it. My first language is not English, so please be lenient about grammatical or stylistic errors. Hopefully that will not spoil the content. September 1, 2018 3 The Michael Jackson Allegations The 1993 Allegations 4 The Michael Jackson Allegations Key players Michael Jackson – The accused. Jordan Chandler – The accuser. Evan Chandler – The accuser’s father. June Chandler – The accuser’s mother. David Schwartz – June Chandler’s second husband. The accuser’s step-father. Ray Chandler – Evan Chandler’s younger brother. He published a book about the allegations in 2004, entitled All That Glitters: The Crime and the Cover-Up. Since the Chandlers never appeared in Court to testify about their allegations I use this book in this paper to represent the Chandlers’ story. Barry K. Rothman – Evan Chandler’s first attorney during the case. Larry Feldman – The civil attorney the Chandlers hired after Rothman stepped back from the case. (In fact, before hiring Feldman they shortly hired Gloria Allred, but they fired her again only after a couple of days.) Thomas Sneddon – Santa Barbara District Attorney. Gil Garcetti – Los Angeles District Attorney. Bertram Fields – Michael Jacksons first attorney during the case. Anthony Pellicano – A private investigator working for Bertram Fields. In 2002 in a case completely unrelated to Jackson Pellicano was jailed for illegal wiretaping and the possession of illegal weapons. This does not affect our arguments here with regards to the child molestation allegations against Michael Jackson, because most of the things I say about Pellicano or the events he was involved in are either taken from the Chandlers’ own accounts or are supported by evidence. Howard Weitzman - Attorney for Michael Jackson. Johnnie Cochran - Attorney for Michael Jackson. Victor Gutierrez – Freelance journalist. Michael Freeman – Attorney for June Chandler. 5 The Michael Jackson Allegations The Timeline On August 17, 1993 the Los Angeles police department opened an investigation against Michael Jackson based on an allegation that he had sexually molested a 13-year-old boy called Jordan Chandler. In this section of the paper I will discuss the Chandler case in- depth. I will first present a timeline which hopefully will make it easier to follow the events as they unfolded and to put them into a context. While you go along with the timeline you will find links to longer articles. These articles make up the chapters of our paper. You may opt to read the timeline first then go to the articles, like when you read a book, or you can click on the links in the timeline which will take you right to the relevant article, like on a website. These articles explain the events listed in the timeline in-depth and they are essential for understanding the Chandler allegations against Michael Jackson. In the timeline one article may be cited several times if it is deemed relevant to several events. The sources are listed at the end of each article. *** May 1992 – Michael Jackson meets his later accuser Jordan Chandler and his family at a

I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity by Sara Tenenbaum B.A. in American Studies, May 2006, Brandeis University A Thesis submitted to The Faculty of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences of George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the degree of Master of Arts May 15, 2011 Thesis Directed by James A. Miller Professor of English and American Studies © Copyright 2011 by Sara Tenenbaum All rights reserved ii Abstract of Thesis "I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity" This thesis addresses the cultural phenomenon surrounding Michael Jackson's 1982 album Thriller and uses it as a lens through which to view and analyze the development of a distinct American, primarily youth, identity in 1983 and 1984. It is structured using a three-prong approach that first analyzes the sonic work of the music of Thriller, second explores the characteristics of Michaelmania and the youth identity being constructed within the Michael Jackson pop explosion, and third analyzes the backlash from both the white and African American communities against Jackson in that time to illuminate his subversion and danger to the status quo. I argue that Jackson's act of profound crossover during the Thriller era triggered within the American youth an equally profound act of identity formation that transcended racial stratification in America's past and created a foundational part of our contemporary identity that moves slightly beyond America's troubled racial history. Using both the voices of his fans and his critics to tease out the work his person and his music did in the early 1980's, I advocate we keep Jackson and his work foregrounded in our study of popular culture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as his pop explosion fundamentally and permanently effected how Americans understand ourselves and our relations with each other.

It has been accepted for inclusion in University of Chicago Legal Forum by an authorized editor of Chicago Unbound. For more information, please contact [email protected]. The Rules of #MeToo Jessica A. Clarke† ABSTRACT Two revelations are central to the meaning of the #MeToo movement. First, sexual harassment and assault are ubiquitous. And second, traditional legal procedures have failed to redress these problems. In the absence of effective formal legal pro- cedures, a set of ad hoc processes have emerged for managing claims of sexual har- assment and assault against persons in high-level positions in business, media, and government. This Article sketches out the features of this informal process, in which journalists expose misconduct and employers, voters, audiences, consumers, or professional organizations are called upon to remove the accused from a position of power. Although this process exists largely in the shadow of the law, it has at- tracted criticisms in a legal register. President Trump tapped into a vein of popular backlash against the #MeToo movement in arguing that it is “a very scary time for young men in America” because “somebody could accuse you of something and you’re automatically guilty.” Yet this is not an apt characterization of #MeToo’s paradigm cases.

PROLOGUE 2005 THE BATHROOM MIRROR AT A LITTLE hotel in Santa Maria, California, is fogged with condensation, and there is so much steam from my morning shower that my refl ection is rendered invisible. As I stand at the sink, dripping wet and wrapped in a towel, the opaque glass is now nothing but an inviting canvas of mist on which to log a thought I have been repeating in my head. ‘MICHAEL JACKSON 1,000% INNOCENT’, I daub with my fi nger, ending with a full-stop that I convert into a smiley-face. Believe in the happy ending. I stare at this message and focus on a visualised outcome: victory, justice and vindication. It is 10 March 2005: day 11 of the courthouse circus that sees my brother accused of child molestation. ‘MICHAEL JACKSON 1,000% INNOCENT’, I read again. I continue to stare at the top left corner of the mirror, watching the smiley-face start to run. Transfi xed, I fl ash back to Michael’s bath- room at the Hayvenhurst estate in Encino, outside Los Angeles – his home prior to Neverland – and know that I am mimicking in 2005 what he did in 1982. Back then, in the top left corner of his ix YYouou AArere NNotot AAlone_UK.inddlone_UK.indd ixix 110/08/20110/08/2011 15:0715:07 YOU ARE NOT ALONE mirror, he took a black felt permanent marker – to match the black marble – and scrawled: ‘THRILLER! 100 MILLION SALES … SELL OUT STADIUMS’. • Michael Jackson's Gesamtkunstwerk
Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 5 (November 2015) Michael Jackson’s Gesamtkunstwerk: Artistic Interrelation, Immersion, and Interactivity From the Studio to the Stadium Sylvia J. Martin Michael Jackson produced art in its most total sense. Throughout his forty-year career Jackson merged art forms, melded genres and styles, and promoted an ethos of unity in his work. Jackson’s mastery of combined song and dance is generally acknowledged as the hallmark of his performance. Scholars have not- ed Jackson’s place in the lengthy soul tradition of enmeshed movement and mu- sic (Mercer 39; Neal 2012) with musicologist Jacqueline Warwick describing Jackson as “embodied musicality” (Warwick 249). Jackson’s colleagues have also attested that even when off-stage and off-camera, singing and dancing were frequently inseparable for Jackson. James Ingram, co-songwriter of the Thriller album hit “PYT,” was astonished when he observed Jackson burst into dance moves while recording that song, since in Ingram’s studio experience singers typically conserve their breath for recording (Smiley). Similarly, Bruce Swedien, Jackson’s longtime studio recording engineer, told National Public Radio, “Re- cording [with Jackson] was never a static event. We used to record with the lights out in the studio, and I had him on my drum platform. Michael would dance on that as he did the vocals” (Swedien ix-x). Surveying his life-long body of work, Jackson’s creative capacities, in fact, encompassed acting, directing, producing, staging, and design as well as lyri- cism, music composition, dance, and choreography—and many of these across genres (Brackett 2012).

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens and Academy Award-winning actor, environmental activist and U.N. Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio, BEFORE THE FLOOD is a riveting account of the dramatic changes now occurring around the world due to climate change, as well as the actions we as individuals and as a society can take to prevent catastrophic disruption of life on our planet. Fisher Stevens, director says: “We can no longer turn a blind eye to the issue of climate change; we are at a crucial moment where if we don’t act now, we will forever pay the price. I’m looking forward to sharing BEFORE THE FLOOD with the BFI London Film Festival this October. London is one of the greatest cities in the world and my hope is that this film provides a global wakeup call about our inevitable fate should we fail to act." Clare Stewart, Director BFI London Film Festival, says: “We are thrilled to be presenting the European premiere of BEFORE THE FLOOD, a film that is both an urgent and illuminating update on climate change and a passionate clarion call from Leonardo DiCaprio and Fisher Stevens.” National Geographic presents with Ratpac Documentary Films an Appian Way production in association with Insurgent docs and Diamond docs.
