Page 2 Igbo Educational Lecture Series Brochure 2019 WELCOME CONVENER'S MESSAGE It is really exciting that the University of Winnipeg Global College “Igbo Educational Lecture Series” (IELS)whose inaugural was featured on March 24, 2006 celebrates its 13th birth-day this March 2019. This serves as true testimony of the calibre of experts who have endowed the past 16 events in the IELS with the benefit of their top quality lectures. We are sincerely grateful to them all. Sincere thanks go to Dr. Annette Trimbee, UofW President and Vice-Chancellor for giving us the honour of her speaking in our forum; to Dr. Jan Stewart (Deputy Provost and As- soc. VP Academic) who is also the current Executive Director of the Global College. We remain indebted to the originators: Hon. Dr. , theFounding Director of the UofW Global College [IELS inaugural Speaker; currently Igbo Chieftain “Ochendo”], and the then President and Vice-Chancellor of the UofW, Hon. Dr. [IELS 4th Speaker], who created the Global College. We applaud Dr. Neil Besner [IELS 6th Speaker; UofW Provost and Vice-President Academic], and Dr. Alaa Abdel-Aziz [IELS 2nd Speak- er; then UofWVice-President Research, International & External Affairs; and subsequently President, Univ. of Prince Edward Islands]. Our gratitude also goes to the successors in the management and grooming of the Global College namely: Rev. Dr. James Christie [3rd IELS Speaker, and currently Igbo Chieftain “NwanneDinamba”], Dr. Geoff Scott [Professor of Geography, and Global College Principal], Senator Prof. MarilouMacPhedran [7th IELS Speaker], Dr. Dean Peachey [Speaker, Event Creator and Leader in both the 14th and 15th IELS Events], plus the other distinguished experts who helped to sustain and nurture the College to its present notable status. The life wire of the lecture series has been strengthened by the support from all the UofW experts and icons: Dr. Ken McClus- key [Dean of Education and IELS 12th Speaker]; Dr. Claudia Wright [Assoc. VP Research; IELS 5th Speaker (now of blessed memory)]; Dr. Sandy Kirby [Assoc. VP Research and Dean of Grad Studies; 11th Speaker]; Dr. John Corlett [VP Academic and Provost; 10th Speaker]. It is even the more profound to realize that the Series is being specially endowed today by the fact that a globally relevant topic is the theme of the Lecture this evening. We are all aware that there is need for Indigenous thought and Indigenous en- gagement of various kinds to be explored as part of the human rights campaign, as we work towards transforming the world into the global village of our dreams. The grounds lost by Indigenous peoples through colonization are in the process of being reclaimed through the advocacy of individuals genuinely working selflessly for same. The situation in Manitoba is worthy of emulation, and Dr. Annette Trimbee as President and Vice-Chancellor of the UofW is a notable champion: her bold steps at the UofW stand as a clear testimonial. We are grateful for the support from all: The Manitoba Premier Hon. has demonstrated his support by sending a designate in the person of Hon. Colleen Mayer. This is appreciated. The Messages of Goodwill in this brochure from our Chieftain, Larry Vickar (Onwa-Netirioha); Hon. (MP Winnipeg South); Mayor Brian Bowman; Acting Deputy Mayor Vivian Santos; RCMP “D” Division Commander, A/Commissioner Jane MacLatchy; Hon Andrew Smith, MLA for Southdale; and the Manitoba Liberal caucus – Dr. (MLA River Heights), (MLA St. Boniface and Leader of MB Liberal Party); (MLA Burrows); and (MLA Kewatinook) are greatly ap- preciated. Dr. Lloyd Kornelsen, Flavio Fonseca and Nivin Abdalla, your invaluable assistance in the Global College is hereby gratefully acknowledged. Kevin Rosen, Jennifer Cox, and Naniece Ibrahim at UofW Communications, and Lynn Jones, Alexis Morham and Christine Payne of the President’s Office have been particularly generously helpful. The UofW faculty, staff and students, as well as the general public, you all deserve our fervent appreciation for all your support and attendance and participation at the various editions of the IELS. We remain grateful for the diligence and commitment of our IELS committee members, and all our Umunna membership all through these many years. May I place on special record here the untiring and selfless efforts invested by Mr. Ernest Anamalu (IELS committee member, and Umunna Assistant Secretary) for the success of this event. Please enjoy this evening as you participate in the lecture “Indigenization as a Pathway to Resiliency.” Da-alu nu (Thanks to you all). Dr. Michael O. Eze Convener IELS

Dr. Trimbee’s presentation including those which have preceded it is a tremen- dous opportunity to improve knowledge and exchange views on a subject of considerable importance to our province.

I join all Manitobans in thanking the University of Winnipeg and the many volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure that this evening’s presentation and the Igbo Education Lecture Series, is both informative and stimulating.

The Honourable Brian Pallister

Mayor’s Message

It is my pleasure to extend warmest greetings to everyone attending the 17th event in the Igbo Educational Lecture Series featuring Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg with her topic Indigenization as a Pathway to Resiliency.

I believe that Winnipeg is uniquely positioned to act as an international leader in human rights. Our city has significant assets to support this goal from the University of Winnipeg Global College with its goal to build global citizenship and engagement in human rights through interdisciplinary teaching, research, dialogue, and action, to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights which serves as a beacon nationally and internationally, to the skilled and talented community members who are playing a role every day in advancing human rights and multiculturalism. Here in Winnipeg, where we are on a path to reconciliation with Indigenous people, it is so important that key partners in the community like the University of Winnipeg — are engaged in supporting, bringing forward, and championing Indigenous perspectives in the provincial, national and global human rights discussion. I want to recognize the work that the University has done to embrace a plu- rality of world views and build an educational institution where Indigenous students are welcomed and are successful.

I hope that everyone will enjoy their evening with Dr. Trimbee. On behalf of the City of Winnipeg, I want to recognize the work of the organizers and volunteers whose efforts make events like tonight’s IELS discussion possible. Thank you for all the work you do to make Winnipeg a richer, more resilient city and our world a better, more understanding and more peaceful place.

Warmly,

Mayor Brian Bowman City of Winnipeg

Message from the Manitoba Liberal Caucus

To all attendees of “Indigenization as a Pathway to Resiliency” by Dr. Annette Trimbee,

Highlighting and acknowledging Indigenous success is a foundation for Manitoba and Canada’s brighter future. For our future to be a positive one, we must fully engage and support Indigenous students in their educational endeavours.

It is truly amazing to see our educational institutes taking steps to facilitate and develop the latent talent within our In- digenous communities. It is encouraging to see academic leaders such as Dr. Trimbee dedicate their time to Indigenizing the University of Winnipeg campus to make it more welcoming and supportive to future and current Indigenous students. These are ideas that we can implement, not only in education, but in government and other places as well.

We wish you great success in your endeavours!
