#HELLOSPRING “THE VICTORY”

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that celebrates the date of the ’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Cinco de Mayo 2018 occurs on Saturday, May 5. A relatively minor holiday in , in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is widely interpreted as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with substantial Mexican- American populations. Chicano activists raised awareness of the holiday in the 1960s, in part because they identified with the victory of indigenous (such as Juárez) over European invaders during the Battle of Puebla. Today, revelers mark the occasion with parades, parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing and traditional foods such as tacos and mole poblano. Some of the largest festivals are held in Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston. Many people outside Mexico mistakenly believe that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican independence, which was declared more than 50 years before the Battle of Puebla. Independence Day in Mexico (Día de la Independencia) is commemorated on 16, the anniversary of the revolutionary priest Miguel y Costilla’s famous “Grito de Dolores” (“Cry of Dolores”), a call to arms that amounted to a declaration of war against the Spanish colonial government in 1810.

HISTORY OF MOTHER’S DAY Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. However, the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.” Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service. Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.

Averaging a weight loss of 4-5 pounds a week, Wayne has been rocketing through Weight Watchers. Everyone is in awe not only of his progress, but also his determination. But what really urged him to finally join the second batch of Weight Watchers?

Wayne has been struggling with diabetes for quite a while now. He was a slave to his insulin shots, having to do it thrice a day everyday. Some Weight Watchers vets started to sell him on the idea of doing Weight Watchers and how beneficial it could be for him. After a lot of convincing, he finally decided to give it a shot.

When he decided to join Weight Watchers he promised himself he would take it seriously. Maybe it was all the discipline he learned from years serving our country in the U.S. Navy, but Wayne has never cheated on tracking his points. He doesn’t use his bonus points either. He actually consistently goes under his daily points, going to bed with 6-8 points still unused.

All this discipline has led to his A1C levels going from 11 to 6.5. Nowadays, the insulin shots he used to give himself 3 times a day has gone down to 5 insulin shots from when he started Weight Watchers to now.

A typical day for Wayne? A bacon, egg & cheese croissant for breakfast, grilled chicken breast with sautéed vegetables for lunch, and a chicken fajita pita or Weight Watchers pizza for dinner. That doesn’t sound bad at all.

So what is his end goal? To get off of insulin altogether and get his A1C to normal. His tips for anyone looking to be successful at Weight Watchers?
