Chanson des cueilleuses de lentisques Tout gai! Programme Bernadette Johns - mezzo-soprano Alexandra Standing - piano Franz Schubert (1797-1828) Die junge Nonne The young nun Wie braust durch die Wipfel der heulende Sturm! How the wild storm roars through the treetops! Es klirren die Balken, es zittert das Haus! The rafters clatter, the house shudders! Es rollet der Donner, es leuchtet der Blitz, The thunder roars, the lightning flashes, Und finster die Nacht, wie das Grab! And the night is as dark as the grave. So tobt’ es auch jüngst noch in mir! And so, as the storm rages, Es brauste das Leben, wie jetzo der Sturm, Not long ago a storm raged within me Es bebten die Glieder, wie jetzo das Haus, My limbs trembled like the house now, Es flammte die Liebe, wie jetzo der Blitz, Love flamed like the lightning now, Und finster die Brust, wie das Grab. And my heart was as dark as the grave. Nun tobe, du wilder, gewalt’ger Sturm, So rage on, you wild, powerful storm, Im Herzen ist Friede, im Herzen ist Ruh, In my heart is peace, in my heart is calm, Des Bräutigams harret die liebende Braut, The loving bride awaits her bridegroom Gereinigt in prüfender Glut, Purified in the testing flames, Der ewigen Liebe getraut. Wedded to eternal love. Ich harre, mein Heiland, mit sehnendem Blick! I wait, my Saviour, with a longing gaze! Komm, himmlischer Bräutigam, hole die Braut, Come, heavenly bridegroom, claim your bride, Erlöse die Seele von irdischer Haft. Release her soul from earthly ties. Horch, friedlich ertönet das Glöcklein vom Turm! Listen, the bells ring peacefully from the tower! Es lockt mich das süsse Getön I am drawn by the sweet sound, Allmächtig zu ewigen Höh’n. Alleluia! So powerfully to eternal heights. Alleluia! Jakob Nicolaus von Craigher de Jachelutta (1797-1855) Frank Bridge (1879-1941) Come to me in my dreams Come to me in my dreams, and then Or, as thou never cam’st in sooth, By day I shall be well again! Come now, and let me dream it truth; For then the night will more than pay And part my hair, and kiss my brow, The hopeless longing of the day. And say: My love! why suff’rest thou? Come, as thou cam’st a thousand times, Come to me in my dreams, and then A messenger from radiant climes, By day I shall be well again! And smile on thy new world, and be For then the night will more than pay As kind to all the rest as me. The hopeless longing of the day. Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) from: Rückert-Lieder Blicke mir nicht in die Lieder Don’t look at my songs! Blicke mir nicht in die Lieder! Don’t look at my songs! To watch them grow. Deine Neugier ist Verrat! Your curiosity is betrayal! Bienen, wenn sie Zellen bauen, Bees building their cells, Lassen auch nicht zu sich schauen, Don’t let anyone watch them either, Schauen selber auch nicht zu. Don’t even watch themselves. Wenn die reichen Honigwaben When the rich honeycombs Sie zu Tag gefördert haben, Have been brought out to the light of day, Dann vor allen nasche du! Then you can have the first taste! Um Mitternacht At midnight Um Mitternacht At midnight Hab' ich gewacht I was keeping watch Und aufgeblickt zum Himmel; And gazed up to heaven; Kein Stern vom Sterngewimmel No star from the throng of stars Hat mir gelacht Smiled down on me Um Mitternacht. At midnight. Um Mitternacht At midnight Hab' ich gedacht I sent my thoughts Hinaus in dunkle Schranken. Out through the barriers of the dark. Es hat kein Lichtgedanken No thought of light Mir Trost gebracht Brought me comfort Um Mitternacht. At midnight. Um Mitternacht At midnight Nahm ich in acht I became aware Die Schläge meines Herzens; Of the beating of my heart; Ein einz'ger Puls des Schmerzes One single pulse of agony War angefacht Was kindled Um Mitternacht. At midnight. Um Mitternacht At midnight Kämpft' ich die Schlacht, I fought the battle, O Menschheit, deiner Leiden; O Mankind, of your suffering; Nicht konnt' ich sie entscheiden I could not gain victory Mit meiner Macht By my own strength Um Mitternacht. The RECORDING Navigating, Coping & Cashing In Maze November 2013 Introduction Trying to get a handle on where the recording business is headed is a little like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall. No matter what side of the business you may be on— producing, selling, distributing, even buying recordings— there is no longer a “standard operating procedure.” Hence the title of this Special Report, designed as a guide to the abundance of recording and distribution options that seem to be cropping up almost daily thanks to technology’s relentless march forward. And as each new delivery CONTENTS option takes hold—CD, download, streaming, app, flash drive, you name it—it exponentionally accelerates the next. 2 Introduction At the other end of the spectrum sits the artist, overwhelmed with choices: 4 The Distribution Maze: anybody can (and does) make a recording these days, but if an artist is not signed Bring a Compass: Part I with a record label, or doesn’t have the resources to make a vanity recording, is there still a way? Its history spans 200 years and, like its meandering path through the countryside, there have been many twists and turns along the way. Super Slow Way: A Rhapsody to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is a celebration of the history, people and stories of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal through music, using a series of poems specially written by celebrated Yorkshire poet Ian McMillan. The canal was ofcially opened in Blackburn in October 1816 when, for the frst time, the journey could be made from the coalfelds of Yorkshire, through the weaving mills of Lancashire to the port of Liverpool, bringing work and industry to the towns along the way, making them centres of the Industrial Revolution and the towns we see today.
