The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves. McLaughlin earned his second straight AFCA First-Team All-America honor as a sophomore by leading the nation in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and scoring. He has 2,190 yards, 28 rushing touchdowns and 13.8 points per game on the year and has helped lead Notre Dame (Ohio) into the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs. McLaughlin broke his own Mountain East Conference record with his 28 rushing touchdowns in 2019. Harris led the nation in punt return yards with 436 and finished second in combined kick return yards with 1,007. He broke the school record for single-season and career punt return yards. (Blue Springs South) *-2018 AFCA All-American Team Background: The five teams now chosen for each AFCA division evolved from a single 11-player squad in 1945. From 1945 until 1967, only one team was chosen. From 1967 through 1971, two teams – University Division and College Division – were selected. In 1972, the College Division was split into College I and College II. In 1979, the University Division was split into two teams — FBS and FCS. In 1996, the College I and College II teams were renamed Division II and Division III, respectively. In 2006, the AFCA started selecting an NAIA-only team. From 1965-81, a 22-player (11 offensive, 11 defensive) team was chosen. In 1982, a punter and placekicker were added to the team. In 1997, a return specialist was added, giving us the current 25-player team. The return specialist position was replaced by an all-purpose player in 2006. In 2016, the AFCA added a second team All-America. Selection Process: The AFCA’s Division II All-America Selection Committee is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA’s seven districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a confer- ence call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the teams are chosen. The Award: Members of the AFCA Coaches’ All-America First Team will receive a plaque commemorating their selection to the team, while members of the Second Team will receive a certificate. Consecutive Years: Texas A&M-Kingsville had at least one player named to the AFCA Division II Coaches’ All-America Team for 18 straight seasons, from 1986 to 2003, the longest streak by any team in Division II. Northwest Missouri State is second, having had 16 straight selections from 1996 to 2011. Pittsburg State has the third longest streak at nine straight selections from 1988 to 1996. The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves. Watson finished 2014 as the leading rusher in Division II with a career-high 2,153 yards on 319 carries while scoring 29 rushing touchdowns, which also lead the nation. His 195.7 yards per game was also tops among Division II players. Fradi was No. 1 in the nation with 28.5 tackles for loss, tied for No. 9 in solo tackles with 73, and finished with 8.5 sacks. The list of candidates was announced Monday morning by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee. The list includes players from each of the four Division II Super Regions. Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information National Sponsors directors at the 171 NCAA Division II football-playing institutions. The 42 initial candidates will be placed on regional ballots and the top two players from each of the four NCAA regions will advance to the national ballot when regional voting concludes on November 28. There are seven nominees from Super Region 1, 10 from Super Region 2, 14 from Super Region 3 and 11 from Super Region 4. The winner of the 2016 award will be announced on Friday, December 16 via a webcast and the winner will be honored at a luncheon on the University of North Alabama campus on January 6, 2017. The Hill Trophy is sponsored by the City of Florence, Ala., Herff Jones and the Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa.     HARLON HILL FINALISTS ANNOUNCED HARLON HILL FINALISTS ANNOUNCED EIGHT NAMED AS FINALISTS FOR HARLON HILL TROPHY AS DIVISION II FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Following regional voting, the Little Rock Touchdown Club, in conjunction with the Great American Conference, revealed the eight finalists for the 2019 Harlon Hill Trophy, the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year. The NCAA Division II sports information directors selected the finalists through a round of regional voting. The eight finalists will now be placed on the national ballot where all 184 of the division’s school and conference SIDs will select the award’s 34th winner. The top two players from the four Super Regions advanced to the national ballot. Three quarterbacks, three running backs, one wide receiver and a defensive end comprised the list of 2019 finalists. Notre Dame College sophomore running back Jaleel McLaughlin and Slippery Rock senior quarterback Roland Rivers III advanced from Super Region #1. Lenoir-Rhyne senior defensive end Jaquan Artis and Valdosta State junior quarterback Rogan Wells moved on from Super Region #2. From Super Region #3, Central Missouri quarterback Brook Bolles and Harding junior running back Cole Chancey earned spots on the national ballot from Super Region #3.
