Phil Nusbaum KM: Kim Monson MM: Mike Monson
Kim Monson and Mike Monson Narrators Phil Nusbaum Interviewer March 13, 2010 PN: Phil Nusbaum KM: Kim Monson MM: Mike Monson PN: What we’re trying to do is document Bluegrass in the state of Minnesota. You guys have been here for a pretty long time. I guess to me what matters is performance, and also the scene, the informal performance, people who hang around and play, and the socializing that goes along with it, because there’s a lot of performance that takes place that isn’t formal, that isn’t at a Bluegrass show. So all that’s really important to me and how all of this has changed over time. So, let’s just start by asking you where you’re from and how you came to this - Kim or Mike, whichever wants to start? KM: I grew up in Grand Rapids [Minnesota], born in 1959. My dad was a musician and best friends with Lloyd LaPlant, so we grew up with all the LaPlant kids, and Lloyd and my dad were musicians together. They did a lot of jamming when I was a kid, and my father played guitar, mandolin, and a little bit of banjo. I remember going over to the LaPlants at a very young age, and seeing guitars stripped out on the top of his freezer, ‘cause that’s where he made ‘em. He didn’t have a bigger workshop then, he did it out of his basement. So, from very early on I was listening to the music, not really thinking that I was going to ever become involved with it. -
Welcome to the 41St Tønder Festival Last Year’S 40Th Jubilee Was a Huge, Warm Celebration of 4 Decades of International and Danish Folk Roots Music in Tønder
Welcome to the 41st Tønder Festival Last year’s 40th jubilee was a huge, warm celebration of 4 decades of international and Danish folk roots music in Tønder. It also marked the launch of the Tønder Festival of the future. Hand-made music with roots in folk, country, blues, cajun, world and the rest has seen yet ano- ther massive renaissance these past few years. Tønder Festival has been part of this all the way. The rebuilding of the festival is a process that began in 2012, and 2015 sees the topping out. This year’s music programme reflects today’s genre-crossing artists, the bearers of the strong traditions and new, young names. International giants in the veteran class side by side with the top musicians of the future. This year again, Tønder Festival’s audiences will find a festival site alive with many different mu- sic venues, special thematic zones and a wide selection of restaurants, cafés and sales booths. Four days’ immersion in a unique festival atmosphere with its well-defined identity and audiences who love the music and the vibe. 2014 was also the year when the conductor’s baton changed hands. Tønder Festival’s artistic director Carsten Panduro retired and the new management took over. The new management team inherited a festival that turned loss to profit in 2014, a festival with huge and growing local and regional backing and enormous media attention. There have been digital changes, too. Tønder Festival has a new website and an intensified pre- sence on social media. Tønder Festival has as its main priority, as always, and more than ever, active contact with old and new audience members, those who buy wrist bands to participate in our unique, close fellowship centred on acoustic music of the highest calibre. -

In the fair city of Detroit, nestled among the garage- rock nooks and country crannies, lurks the music of Blanche. Husband and wife Dan and Tracee Miller trade intense and haunting vocals over an uneasy sea of pedal steel, banjo, raw guitar sounds, and sparse, driving drumming. The moods created in the songs seem to define Blanche. Some songs are sad and pretty, while others have a powerful, spooky feel. The melodies trick you into singing along with tales of superstitions, garbage picking, fading trust, and feelings of lost hope. The sound combines the intense desperation of the Gun Club, the sincere sadness of the Carter Family, and the creepy playfulness of Lee Hazlewood Intro taken from the biography on the Blanche website which is well worth a visit and a wonderful design. www.blanchemusic.com INTERVIEW BY STEVE RAPID | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RONNIE NORTON Tell us what the secret of Little Amber Bottles is? The Impact of Earl Scruggs on the Five String Banjo
The Impact of Earl Scruggs on the Five String Banjo Mikael Jonassen A technical and historical analysis of the banjo technique used in the bluegrass genre Master’s thesis University of Oslo Faculty of Humanities Department of Musicology November 2016 2 Abstract With its distinct sound and virtuoso playing style, the five string banjo is of central importance to bluegrass music, and most banjo playing in bluegrass is based on the style of the central individual Earl Scruggs. In this thesis, a technical insight to the playing techniques used on the banjo in bluegrass music is achieved using transcriptions, and both technical and musical analysis. Historical context for both the banjo as an instrument, bluegrass as a genre and Earl Scruggs as a musician and innovator is given through literature studies. Findings include technical intricacies not previously discussed in an academic context, discoveries about phrasing on the banjo through deconstructions of musical phrases, and dispelling of popular myths in this particular subset of American music history. 3 4 Foreword I would like to thank the Department of Musicology at the University of Oslo for accommodating me these past years, and enabling me to write this thesis about banjo playing. My supervisor Kristian Nymoen has played a crucial role for the whole duration of my writing of this thesis, and has supported and inspired me all the way even when my thoughts have been all over the place. I would also like to thank all the other people who have given me tips and pointers along the way, and enduring more intense banjo talk than usual. -
