.363 Artigos Interdepartamentais . .401 5 anuário científico IPLeiria/ESTG 2007 Área Científica de Ciências da Linguagem anuário científico IPLeiria/ESTG 2007 Ciências da Linguagem INSTITUTIONAL WEB ADVERTISING OF PORTUGAL AS A TOURIST DESTINATION: A CORPUS-BASED STUDY Adonay Custódia Santos Moreira – Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão de Leiria, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria IV DICOEN - Discourse, Communication and the Enterprise IV Conference, School of English Studies, University of Nottingham - Reino Unido, 10-12 de Setembro de 2007 RESUMO In Portugal, tourism is an economic activity that generates significant income and which, therefore, increasingly relies on marketing strategies to reinforce “Portugal” as a tourist destination. Institutional web advertising has become a key factor in marketing Portugal beyond the national market, namely through the creation of multilingual websites. This paper sets out to investigate a corpus of institutional websites in Portuguese and their translations into English, so as to analyse how several lexical items are translated and distributed across the websites. This study aims at contributing to a better understanding of the language used in tourist advertising material and of the specific translation strategies which are used when translating/promoting Portugal abroad. The theoretical and methodological support is provided by Corpus Linguistics, which allows the investigation of large quantities of data with the help of computational tools. The parallel corpus for this study consists of texts in Portuguese and their translations into English, all of which sourced at the nineteen Portuguese Tourism Regions’ websites. 9 anuário científico IPLeiria/ESTG 2007 Ciências da Linguagem RETHINKING RATIONALITY: LOCATING THINKING IN GENDER Maria Carminda Bernardes Silvestre – Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão de Leiria, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria REVISTA Veredas, Vol. 10 (1/2). ISSN: 1415-2533 versão electrónica: http://www.revistaveredas.ufjf.br/volumes/veredas_portugal/artigo10.pdf RESUMO The specific objectives of this article is to show how the concept of rationality is tied up to old paradigms and to unpack media discursive practices in which text producers of The Economist use language when portraying male and female executives and present the internal world of the mind of the sensers to discriminate against women through the stereotypical semantic devaluation of a concept that people might think of neutral: rationality. 10 anuário científico IPLeiria/ESTG 2007 Ciências da Linguagem MAPPING EMOTIONS IN MULTIMODAL TEXTS Maria Carminda Bernardes Silvestre – Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão de Leiria, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria 34th ISFC - 34th International Systemic Functional Congress, University of Southern Denmark, Odense – Dinamarca, 16-20 de Julho de 2007 RESUMO Departing from the assumption that schools and universities must incorporate new tools to empower citizens and the need to incorporate new concepts and theories of language as an alternative way of making sense of the world, I shall focus my attention on the role of the teacher in constructing materials to develop the students’ abilities in multiliteracies. In order to show how written and visual language interact I shall analyse a book written for children to show how patterns of the different semiotic systems are co-articulated in meaning making in multimodal texts. The purpose of the present paper is to: (i) give some evidence that Social Semiotics and the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Grammar are essential tools to provide some readings for the co-articulation of the different semiotic systems used in our everyday life; (ii) map paths of development in literacy of reading images. Within these overall purposes, the following specific objectives were defined: a) to identify how the image locates entities in space; b) to identify the co-relation of the two semiotic systems (image and written language); c) to map emotions in images; d) to identify the co-relations of emotions in multimodal texts. 11 anuário científico IPLeiria/ESTG 2007 Ciências da Linguagem THE USE OF CONTACT CONTROL MARKERS IN BUSINESS MEETINGS IN BRAZILIAN AND EUROPEAN PORTUGUESE CORPORA Maria Carminda Bernardes Silvestre – Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão de Leiria, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria Leila Barbara – Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, Brasil IV DICOEN - Discourse Communication and the Enterprise Conference, School of English Studies, University of Nottingham - Reino Unido, 10-12 de Setembro de 2007 RESUMO This paper analyses two corpora of business meetings, one in Brazilian Portuguese and one in European Portuguese, in order to study the use of discourse markers. The analysis is developed in the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics using Corpus Linguistic tools. It aims at describing the types present as well as trying to explain the differences in use in terms of the contexts of situation (e.g. types of relationship between participants) and context of culture (Brazil versus Portugal) as well as other possible factors. The results seem to indicate that there are, at least, two types of markers and variants of both and that the difference between variants has to do mainly with the context of culture. 12 anuário científico IPLeiria/ESTG 2007 Ciências da Linguagem THE CONSTRUCTION OF PROFESSIONAL IDENTITIES AND GENDER-CODED ROLE MODELS IN A PORTUGUESE TEENAGE MAGAZINE Maria Carminda Bernardes Silvestre – Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão de Leiria, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria Inês Conde – Escola Superior de Educação de Leiria, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria IV DICOEN - Discourse Communication and the Enterprise Conference, School of English Studies, University of Nottingham – Reino Unido, 10-12 de Setembro de 2007 RESUMO This paper aims at deconstructing the contradictory gender representations which appear to be at stake in the portrayal of professional profiles of media figures as potential “role-models” for readers of teen magazines. Our study draws from a critical analysis of occupational messages, elicited by the discursive conventionality of the editorial section “Interview” in a three month corpus of Gente Jovem, a Portuguese teenage magazine, and is informed by the contributions of Critical Discourse Analysis. As a mediated and interpersonal social practice, the interview, together with the magazine’s ambivalent patterns of addressing a (gendered) audience, allows for a two-sided dynamic gendering process whose textual and ideological schemata is fabricated through verbal interaction. We define this gendering process as a moving phenomenon, that is performed directionally through lexicogrammatical choices and suggest that both the interviewer, as an institutional voice, and the interviewee, entangled as they are in the web of textual and extra-textual interaction, are led to adopt gendered motivated subject positions. More specifically, we argue that because feminist knowledge has become `common-sense' in many media narratives for young women readers, feminist ideas have been recurrently co-opted. This is to say that, within the selected data, texts are likely to establish their `politically correct credentials' by displaying apparent gender- neutral narratives of professional achievement. In this sense, textually construed subjectivities of young, independent and liberated women seem to encode subtle shifts from the public domain into the sphere of the private, towards the realm of collective stereotypical representations of
