Materials include fiction and non-fiction and are mostly English language titles. Books listed have generally been published since 1977, although classic titles distinguished by literary or artistic merit are included, asare bibliographies published before 1977. Arizona heritage that is recorded in Spanish and Native American language materials is listed in the bibliographies cited. Materials are arranged alphabetically by author within each section. A tentative grade level of primary school, intermediate grade, and junior high school is indicated for each resource. The following sections are included:(1) literature for kindergarten through grade 3;(2) literature for grades 4 through 6; (3) folktales;(4) biographies and personal accounts;(5) Arizona environment, wildlife, and plants;(6) geography and travel; (7) politics and government;(8) history;(9) native American history and culture;(10) Hispanic history and culture;(11) magazines;(12) bibliographies; (13) storytellers, authors, and illustrators; and (14) publishers and vendors specializing in the Southwest. A total of 525 print materials are listed.     Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

    I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956).     For a long time I wondered why I was unable to accept Hollywood’s premise that the Germans in World War II were either misunderstood boys (Marlon Brando in ’"The Young Lions") or really nice guys (Vari Heflin in "Under Ten Flags") while the Americans were deserters or draft dodgers (Montgomery Clift and Dean uartin, respectively, in "The Young Lions") and the British were bumbling, incompetent blowhards (Charles Laughton in "Under Ten Flags"). I was far too young, born in 1955, to remember much of the war and I lost no relatives or friends. Although two of my brothers served in the Navy in the Pacific, my family never told me much about the war. So what could I have against the Germans and Japanese? I think I have finally found the answer: the total propaganda saturation reached me through the comic books, especially through the adventures of the Sub-Mariner, the Human Torch, and Captain America, and subsidiary characters in the magazines featur­ ing them. 'hen you were raised on these, you learned to hate the enemy. All of these characters got their start in or around 1 959, two years before America got involved in the war, but they really came into their own when Pearl Harbor was attacked, for several reasons. Captain America, of course, was a patriotic hero-figure of a type which couldn't fully flower in peacetime when patriots are "flag-wavers," It took a full-scale war to release the unabashed patriotism which shot him to the top. The Sub-Mariner started out by marauding all shipping, with some emphasis on Amer­ ican vessels.

Philip Mann, Music Director and Conductor of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra grew up in Durango, Colorado. He attended school on an Indian reservation and lived on a ranch with horses and dogs in the mountains. He started playing the violin at age 5 and the bassoon at age 12 and loved music as a child, but didn’t always like to practice (now he is glad he did). Mr. Mann studied engineering, political science and physics in college, but then decided to make music his life. Mr. Mann chose to learn how to conduct because his step-father was a conductor and teacher. He participated in the Hot Springs Music Festival in 2006 and loves Hot Springs and Little Rock! He enjoys fly-fishing, hiking, reading and playing and watching sports.
