Windows into the past: narrative insights into education Eleanor Peeler [email protected] WINDOWS INTO THE PAST: NARRATIVE INSIGHTS INTO EDUCATION Eleanor Peeler University of Melbourne, Melbourne Abstract The intent of this paper is to stress the importance of narrative and story, and to share the experience of opening the windows of memory to look into the past and uncover fascinating and valuable histories as portrayed in a current study. The longitudinal study of an educator follows his life story and his role in education. Set in Victoria, it explores the founding of the State’s education system and highlights progressive developments. The life story reveals the history of the system and evolving philosophies that influenced the life of the subject. The study considers the philosophies and how they influenced the subject’s thinking and actions. Using windows as a metaphor, Part 1 of the paper includes discussion regarding the appropriacy of narrative as a research tool, considers the notion of memory and introduces the research subject. Part 2 gives insights into three distinct periods and the part played by three men who guided Victoria’s educational development and growth throughout the twentieth century. In relation to each is a brief discussion of their influence on the career of the research subject. Windows into the past While the story of the narratives holds interest, the process of narrative inquiry is a valuable tool for research. Old Scotch Football Club CRACKERS CHRONICLES – CLUB COACHES POST-WAR (1946 – 1960) Welcome back to this week’s edition of “Crackers Chronicles”. Each week in this column we will trace some of the history of the Old Scotch Football Club by recounting the contributions made by some of our great club coaches. This week we focus on our club coaches immediately after the War and the Fifties ... A. A. Allan Hopkins 1946 – 1947 From 1925 – 1934, Allan Hopkins was a Footscray Football Club player, playing 151 games and kicking 205 goals. He was a brilliant centreman and played in their 1923 & 1924 VFA premiership teams. In 1930, he coached the Footscray Football Club. In 1931, he was awarded Footscray’s Best & Fairest. In 1935, he captained and coached Yarraville Football Club to their 1935 VFA premiership. In 1989, he was retrospectively awarded the Brownlow Medal for his 1930 season. After the War, in 1946 when the Old Scotch Collegians Football Club reformed, Allan was appointed coach of our team. He coached our team for two seasons. In 1946 he coached our team to be A Section runners up to University Blacks and in 1947 to 7th position in A Section. Allan died in 2001. L. A. Gus Dobrigh 1948 - 1949 From 1914 – 1921, Gus Dobrigh was a Collingwood Football Club player and premiership player in 1917, playing 88 games and kicking 33 goals. From 1922 – 1924 he was a Port Melbourne Football Club player. In 1925, he was coach of the Northcote Football Club and in 1926 & 1927, coach of the Preston Football Club. -

Submission to the Committee for the Parliamentary Inquiry into the extent, benefits and potential of music education in Victorian schools From: Jeremy Ludowyke, Principal of Melbourne High School on behalf of the Melbourne High School Council and school community. I present this submission from the perspective of an experienced government school principal with an extensive, informed and passionate professional experience of music education. In this submission I do not intend to address those aspects of the Inquiry’s terms of reference that deal with the benefits of music education as in my view these have been ably addressed in other submissions to the Inquiry, including that prepared by Dr Anne Lierse on behalf of the Melbourne High School Music department and community. I believe I am well credentialed to provide informed advice relevant to the Inquiry’s terms of reference having served for over ten years as a Principal representative on Regional Instrumental Music reference committees in Eastern, Northern and Southern Regions as well as contributing to the last state wide review of instrumental music resource allocation undertaken by the Department of Education in 2002-3. I have also served as the Principal of schools recognised as exemplars in music education; Princes Hill Secondary College and Melbourne High School. On the basis of this experience of grappling with the complexities of relevant local and systemic provision issues, I intend to present and explore a specific provision model the committee may wish to consider to promote and nurture effective music education in Victoria. The future of music education curriculum: The release of the ACARA Australian curriculum shaping paper for the Arts provides an opportune backdrop to this Inquiry. -

Melbourne High School Athletics ALL FORMS AND INFORMATION SHEETS IN THIS PACKET ARE REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION IN CONDITIONING, WEIGHT TRAINING, TRYOUTS, PRACTICES OR CONTESTS DURING THE 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR! NO SUBSTITUTE FORMS CAN BE ACCEPTED!!! Dear Parent/Guardian, Florida State Statutes mandates that every student athlete must have a Pre-participation Physical Evaluation (EL2), Consent and Release from Liability form (EL3) and a Consent and Release from Liability Certificate for Concussion and Heat-Related Illness (EL3CH) completed each school year. The FHSAA requires a copy of the student athlete’s original birth certificate to be on file in the MHS Athletic Dept. office. In addition Brevard Public Schools also requires the athlete and parent to sign the Parent Permission and Responsibility Statement for Off Campus Extra-Curricular Athletics form. Finally Melbourne High School requires each student athlete and their parent/guardian to sign our Athlete Code of Conduct and the Parent/Guardian/Spectator Code of Conduct. Melbourne High School respectfully requests that the physical be completed after June 1st each year in order to be valid for the entire school year. That helps (and you) make sure that your son/daughter has a valid physical throughout the entire school year (August thru May). You may get the physical evaluation completed by the Physician/Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner of your choice after June 1st to be valid for the entire school year. Also, please make sure that after they sign at the bottom of page #2 on the EL2 that they also clearly print their name, address and date of the physical on the appropriate lines.
