It will address man’s existential crisis - his confusion and despair over his existence. T. S Eliot believed that his insight could pull humanity out of the despair and hopelessness of modern era. The paper emphasizes the self transcending character of human existence. The eternal human situation offers liberation of mankind which starts with a total knowledge of man by himself. An "Authentic Wholeness" Synthesis of Jungian and Existential Analysis Samuel Minier Wittenberg University Eclectic approaches to psychotherapy often lack cohesion due to the focus on technique and procedure rather than theory and wholeness of both the person and of the therapy. A synthesis of Jungian and existential therapies overcomes this trend by demonstrating how two theories may be meaningfully integrated The consolidation of the shared ideas among these theories reveals a notion of "authentic wholeness' that may be able to stand on its own as a therapeutic objective. Reviews of both analytical and existential psychology are given. Differences between the two are discussed, and possible reconciliation are offered. After noting common elements in these shared approaches to psychotherapy, a hypothetical therapy based in authentic wholeness is explored. The framework of the research is Crosby’s theory about nihilism. The study is based on a quantitative approach and employs a survey method so as to collect the required data. Statistical population of the study is the whole Students of Shiraz University that according to the formal statistics consists of 20000 students. 400 students are selected by multistage sampling method. The results show that there is a significant relationship between the independent variables of gender, adherences to religious practices, fatalism, fear of failure, need for achievement and the dependent variable nihilism. Stepwise regression method used to predict the dependent variable. Ordinarily, five variables of fatalism, fear of failure, Adherences to religious practices, gender and need for achievement could predict 33% of dependent variable (R2=0.338) Key Words: Nihilism, Sociology, University Students, Shiraz University, Iran Introduction Undoubtedly, the most fundamental question that every human being faces with, is about the purpose of life. 1 THE ANTECEDENTS OF FREE WILL – THE IMPORTANCE OF CONCEPT HETEROGENEITY IN RESEARCH INTERPRETATION AND DISCUSSION Master’s Degree Project in Cognitive Neuroscience University of Skövde Advance level - 30 ECTS Spring term 2018 Magnus J.C. Jensen Supervisor: Antti Revonsuo Examiner: Petri Kajonius 2 Abstract Scientific research on free will was started by Libet et al. (1982). They detected that the readiness potential (RP) proceeded urges with up to 350ms. One interpretation of the RP was that it represented motor planning. The research progress of antecedent brain activity in relation to conscious urges is investigated by looking at contemporary studies. How different assumptions and definitions of the free will concept influences interpretation of these studies is also discussed. The evidence is in favor that the RP is not representing motor planning. Antecedent activity has been detected with numerous technologies, most notably fMRI- classifiers which have been used to predict decisions in advance. Scrutiny of these results reveals that the experimental setups are dependent on time-locking trials which may construe the results. It is shown that predictions based on probabilistic antecedents can be interpreted in numerous ways. The review shows that free will positions differ from each other on several factors, such as whether free will is either-or or exists on a spectrum. Some notable positions are not dependent on antecedent activity at all. The notion of control is one of the pivotal factors deciding if a subject experience free will, not if they are the causer per se. Future discussion will be improved by systematizing the differences between the free will positions and communicating them clearly. -

Absurdist Fiction Absurdist fiction uses illogical or irrational events to point out that life is mysterious and can not be easily comprehended. In the early Twentieth Century science has shown man that he is not king of the animals, that Earth is not at the centre of the universe and that God and heaven do not exist. All the things that gave a man’s life meaning before have been pulled from under him and Absurdist Fiction seeks to reflect that meaninglessness. Bizarrely, it also finds humour in this situation – some compensation at least. As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. The Existential Crisis of Citizenship of the European Union: the Argument for an Autonomous Status Oliver Garner* European University Institute Abstract This paper argues for the (re)construction of citizenship of the European Union as an autonomous status. As opposed to the current legal regime, whereby individuals with nationality of a Member State are automatically granted citizenship of the Union, under this proposal individuals would be free to choose whether or not to adopt the status of citizen of an incipient European polity. At present, the telos and essence of citizenship of the Union is contested. It may be argued that the status is partial or incomplete. This has informed competing normative perspectives. ‘Maximalist’ positions praise the judicial construction of Union citizenship as destined to be the ‘fundamental status’ for all Member State nationals. By contrast, ‘minimalist’ positions argue that the status should remain ‘additional to’ Member State nationality, and the rights created therein should remain supplementary to the status and rights derived from national citizenship. This paper will argue for a new approach to the dilemma. By emancipating the condition for acquisition of EU citizenship from nationality of a Member State, and reconstructing it as an autonomous choice for individuals, it is tentatively suggested that a new constitutional settlement for Europe may be generated. Is it a fundamental legal, political, and societal status for those who hold it? The ambiguity of this question is microcosmic of the general ambiguity surrounding the contested concept and telos of the European Union. -

I searched about five to eight different databases and used dozens of word combinations to find information relevant to my topic. What surprised me about my database research was that even though I thought I only wanted to research humor in literature, I discovered several significant psychology sources that related to my topic. Though hesitant at first, I finally allowed myself to diverge from my original plan and delve into the less-familiar field of scientific study. My project headed in a new direction, transformed for the better. One thing I have learned from this experience is that research never progresses as planned, but unexpected findings can lead to breakthroughs. -

The Stranger’s court system relies on an instinctual, subjective judgment of Meursault’s character in order to judge him and condemn him to death, while Catch-22’s military bureaucracy traps its airmen in cruel, meaningless cycles through verbal trickery and coercion. Both are both flawed institutions whose absurd practices are little more than dangerous exercises in power over others. The last chapter of this thesis examines real world instances of absurdity in law, such as qualified immunity and immigration law, and uses the absurd legal novel as a basis to theorize why these absurd policies exist in a legal system ostensibly based on order and rationality. Ultimately, the absurd legal novel can teach readers how to think critically about the nature of power: who holds it, how they use it, who it is used against, and perhaps most importantly, how it maintains itself. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS I.
