How• •, Among eastern birds, the flycatchers are notoriously difficult to identify. Vague identifications or unqualified errors occur not in- frequently in the genus Empidonax, and we have personally seen bandersidentify wood peweesas Empidonacesand vice versa. Part of the problem lies in the fact that most of us are more familiar with birds in the field than we are with birds in the hand, where they give none of the behavioral clues that aid us in field identification. For this reason, banders have a special need for useful keys. But unfortunately the available texts and keys often lack vital informa- tion on when and where to expect a given species,and they com- monly neglect juvenal plumages and plumage sequences. Some keys in commonusage place undue emphasisupon single characters which, becauseof their variability, should only be used as cor- roborative evidence. A casein point is the often-quoted distinction between two groups of Empidonacesbased solely on back colora- tion, which has inadvertently led to the misidentification of some green-backed Traill's Flycatchers as Acadian Flycatchers. Banders should thus find useful a new key and summary of pertinent in- formation which coversall plumages of all eastern flycatchers, i.e. those speciesnormally found anywhere east of the Great Plains and north of southermnost Texas, and including those extralimital speciesfor which there are a number of specimens taken in the east. The nomenclature used is that of the A. O. U. Check-list of North American Birds (1957). The key emphasizescharacters visible in the living bird but not often mentioned in the literature, such as color of mouth lining, and also considersthe times and places where certain speciesare not to be expected. Its use requires no more than an accurate caliper and a millimeter ruler. With these aids, and a careful reading of all the characters,we believe that 98 per cent or more of all the full- grown birds netted can be readily keyed out, even in the difficult genusEmpidonax. •Instituto de Biologla, Universidad Nacional Aut6noma de M•xico, M•xico, D. Lanyon Bird-BandingJuly Most of the key and the characters used therein were formulated by Phillips on the basisof a long-standinginterest in and experience with the special problems afforded by the flycatchers (Tyrannidae). From 1961 through 1965, the key was used by college under- graduatesparticipating in an ornithologicalresearch program at the American Museum of Natural History's Kalbfleisch Field Research Station at Huntington (Long Island), New York, under Lanyon's supervision. Special attention was given to its practicability in the identification of fall nilgrants and especially of Empidonax. In 1964 and 1965, Howe and Lanyon accumulated data on sexual dimorphism in Empidonax, through laparotomy of birds netted, banded,and later released. USE OF THE KEY Identifying flycatchersis tricky. Before trying, be sureyou under- stand how to use the key, how to take proper measurements,and above all what is and is not included in the key. Read it through several times to see how it works. In summer, the first point to check is always the bases of the shafts of the long wing and tail feathers--the "flight feathers". If all or nearly all of these flight feathers are enclosedin swollen, cylindrical sheaths at their bases, your bird is not fully grown and hence our key will not work. The young bird must normally be identified by the agitated parents that may try to rescueit. If only ce•'tainflight feathers are sheathed, and these are symmetrical in both wings or on both sides of the tail, your bird is an adult in normal molt, for immature flycatchers of those speciesthat occur regularly in eastern North America do not renew their flight feath- ers during their first summer or fall. A molting adult flycatcher, if it is smaller than a phoebe,is pretty surely an Acadian or a Yellow- bellied Flycatcher, for adults of the other small speciesnilgrate before they renew their flight feathers. There are two instances where the key does not distinguish species. (1) Eastern and Western Wood Peweesare keyed out to- gether, because they differ so slightly that many birds can not be identified without good comparativeseries of the two. Adult pewees become so faded and worn after June, in many cases,as to defy identification even in the museum. (2) No attempt is made to dis- tinguish the two song-typesof Traill's Flycatchers, which are prob- ably sibling species (Stein, 1963). If you are interested in these especially difficult problems of identification, see the "Comments on Species"that follow the key. If you think that your bird is not in the key or that it is of a specieswhich, according to the key, should not be in your area at that season,give seriousconsideration to preservingit for permanent study as a specimenin your local, state, or national museum. Re- member how infinitesimal are the chancesof a recovery of the band- ed bird, and even if you did get a miraculousreturn or recovery, it would be meaningless as long as there were any doubt as to the specific identification. On the other hand, if the bird is properly prepared for study, with the sex and age carefully determined and Vol. XXXVII 196(5 Identificationof theFlycatchers [155 the colorsof 'the mouth and other "soft parts" recorded, it will then be available for s'kudyby specialistsat any tirne. We particularly urge that any exceptionally late small flycatcher, i.e. af'ter early October in Canada or 'the nor'them United States and after early November farther south, be preserved. Such st.ragglersmay well include some western species. Permanent preservation of great rarities for your area is always highly desirable, especially where the speciesare hard to identify. For a key to the western speciesof Empidonax, seePhillips, Marshall, and 5Ionson (1964). Sirnplified terms have been used in the key in lieu of more cumbersome statements of stat.istical reliability, though we have included some s'tatistical treatments of mensural characters in the section following the key. Our term "nearly always" is roughly equivalent 'to the statement that "98 out of 100 individuals rnay be expected to be so characterized", and our term "usually" is roughly equivalen'tto the staternent that "85 out of 100 individuals may be expectedto be so characterized",based on the material analyzed. The following terms, arranged alphabetically, are used in the key. It is important to understandthem and to use them correctly. C•own-patch: an area of brightly-colored feathers in the center of the top of the head, usually concealedin life in our speciesthat have it. Eye-ring: complete, or nearly so, "ring" of contrastingly pale feathers borne around (just outside of) the fleshy eyelids. Formula B: see cornmeritsunder Wing shape. Mouth, color of: color of the inner surfacesof the upper and lower mandibles. P•'imaries: the long, outermost wing feathers, forming the tip of the wing; numbered frorn the inside out, with the outermost being number 'ten; see commentsunder Wing shape. Rectrices: the long feathers of the tail, cornprisingsix pairs in all (singular = rect•'ix). Sixth p,imary cut out: the outer web (leading edge) of the sixth primary (fifth from the outside) is emarginated like that of number seven,i.e. it narrows abruNly as illustrated in figure 1. To deter- mine this, the sixth primary should be drawn back gently and pressed lightly against the seventh primary for comparison. In some individuals, an intermediate category rnay be necessary, which we call sixth primaw slightlycut out; here, the emargination is only barely discernible but nevertheless appears to be real. Oc- casionally the effect of slight emargination is an artifact due to an abnormal arrangernent of the feather barbs. Range and Habitat: The Southwestern Willow flycatcher inhabits riparian areas in the southwestern U.S. (Figure 1). It winters in southern Mexico, Central America and northern South America (Sedgwick 2000). In the Middle Rio Grande, the Southwestern willow flycatcher migrates through willow, cottonwood and saltcedar stands (Hunter 1988; Cartron et al. 2008). It is common in New Mexico during migration in the spring and fall, but also breeds in a few areas along the Middle Rio Grande. This species is associated with dense shrubby and wet habitats and typically nests in flooded areas with willow dominated habitat (Sedgwick 2000). Generally, the Southwestern willow flycatcher does not occupy areas dominated by exotics (Skoggs and Marshall 2000), but can successfully nest in saltcedar-dominated habitats (Skoggs et al. 2006). E-mail: [email protected] S u m m a r y New data are presented amplifying or clarifying the status and distribution of 70 species of birds found in central Oaxaca primarily in portions of the Districts of Centro, Etla, Ixtlan, Tlacolula, and Zaachila within 35 km of Oaxaca City. Summaries are based on observations made on 738 days during the period from Dec 1996 to Mar 2002. Principal habitats found in the area are pine-oak (including limited areas of pine-oak-fir and limited extensions of bunch grass mixed with pine-oak), oak scrub, arid subtropical scrub, riparian areas, and areas more or less modified for agricultural or other human use (including gardens and parks). The following species are newly reported from the area as vagrants or rare transient migrants: Plain-capped Starthroat (Heliomaster constantii), Sparkling-tailed Hummingbird (Tilmatura dupontii), Yellow- bellied Flycatcher (Empidonax flaviventris), Acadian Flycatcher (Empidonax virescens), Great Crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus), Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher (Myiodynastes luteiventris), Philadelphia Vireo (Vireo philadelphicus), Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus), and Yellow-green Vireo (Vireo flavoviridis). Also, the following ten species have previously been reported either only on Christmas Bird Counts or as single records: Buff-collared Nightjar (Caprimulgus ridgwayi) (presumed resident), Great Swallow-tailed Swift (Panyptila sanctihieronymi) (local resident), Azure-crowned Hummingbird (Amazilia cyanocephala) (local resident), Green-fronted Hummingbird (Amazilia viridifrons), Garnet- throated Hummingbird (Lamprolaima rhami), Russet-crowned Motmot (Momotus mexicanus) (presumed resident Sierra Juárez), Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe), Social Flycatcher (Myiozetetes similis) (resident), Gray-collared Becard (Pachyramphus major) (resident), and White-eyed Vireo (Vireo griseus).

We surveyed published studies on bird diets, and information on labels of museum specimens, compiling data on the contents of 5,221 stomachs. Eighteen samples (0.3%) presented evidence of predation on vertebrates. Our bibliographic survey also provided records of 203 passerine species preying upon vertebrates, mainly frogs and lizards. Our data suggest that vertebrate predation by passerines is relatively uncommon in the Neotropics and not characteristic of any family. On the other hand, although rare, the ability to prey on vertebrates seems to be widely distributed among Neotropical passerines, which may respond opportunistically to the stimulus of a potential food item.

Greeney Received 3 May 2013 Summary.—I studied two nests of Grey-breasted Flycatcher Lathrotriccus griseipectus in seasonally deciduous dry forest in south-west Ecuador. Nests were open cups constructed in natural depressions, one in the butress of a large tree and one in a clump of bromeliads. Construction of one nest was completed in fve days. Clutch size was two at one nest, and the eggs were pale beige with sparse, red-brown blotching. Eggs at both nests were laid 48 hours apart, and at one nest both eggs hatched 16 days after clutch completion. One nest was depredated immediately after the second egg was laid, but both nestlings fedged after 14 days at the other. Only one adult incubated, but both provisioned nestlings. The species’ breeding biology is similar in all respects to that of the congeneric Euler’s Flycatcher L. euleri, as well as to members of the closely related genus Empidonax of temperate and subtropical America. Grey-breasted Flycatcher Lathrotriccus griseipectus is a monotypic species restricted to the Tumbesian region of western Ecuador and Peru (Fitpatrick 2004). Within its small range, the species is generally uncommon and has apparently declined in recent years, consequently Birdlife International (2013) treat it as Vulnerable. The species’ only congeneric, Euler’s Flycatcher L. euleri, is comparatively widespread and its breeding biology well known (Allen 1893, Euler 1900, Belcher & Smooker 1937, Aguilar et al.

Brooks Houston Museum of Natural Science; Department of Vertebrate Zoology; One Hermann Circle Dr.; Houston, Texas 77030-1799, USA ABSTRACT - I tested confamilial size assortment at three different latitudes, representing a gradient of productivity and stability: the northern subtropics (Rio Grande Valley), the equatorial zone (Amazonian Peru) and the austral subtropics (Paraguayan Chaco). Size assortment is the likely diminished persistence of a species by presence of morphologically similar species; temporally synchronous and spatially sympatric species competing for similar resources should exhibit distinct characters in ecomorphological space, molded over time to reduce the chance of competition. Despite least intensive sampling effort at the Amazon site, it is the most speciose (238 species, 78 common) compared to the Chaco (147, 76) and Rio Grande (61, 24) sites. Size assortment was tested by comparing mean mandibular measurements of confamilials in a real pool against those in a null pool. The pattern of size assortment was pervasive in 68% of the 22 families tested, with most being animal consumers or omnivores, represented by a high percentage of insectivores. Box 1316 Weldon, CA, 93283 (760) 378-2402 March 2006 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Concern for the southwestern willow flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) has stimulated increased research, management, and conservation of the species on its North American breeding grounds. To supplement current knowledge of breeding populations, recent studies in Latin America (Koronkiewicz et al. 1998; Koronkiewicz and Whitfield 1999; Koronkiewicz and Sogge 2000; Lynn and Whitfield 2000, 2002; Nishida and Whitfield 2003, 2004) have focused on wintering ecology. We extended these efforts by surveying for willow flycatchers from 8–24 December, 2004 in northern Mexico and 18–28 January, 2005 in Ecuador. Our goals were to identify territories occupied by wintering willow flycatchers, describe habitat in occupied areas, collect blood and feather samples, collect colorimeter readings, relocate banded individuals, and identify threats to willow flycatcher populations on the wintering grounds. We spent a total of 103.7 survey hours at 30 survey sites in northern Mexico and Ecuador. In northern Mexico, we surveyed four new locations and revisited three locations from our initial 2002 surveys of Mexico. We detected a minimum of 52 willow flycatchers (Sinaloa = 2, Nayarit = 50). In Mexico, occupied habitat was found along the Pacific coast lowlands. In Ecuador, we revisited locations that had been surveyed annually since 2003 (except Sani, which was surveyed 2004–2005) and found high willow flycatcher densities at a new location along the Río Coca.
