Many of those who lived in Queens were frontline workers and city employees who had no choice but to return to work. Nearly a quarter of New York bus and subway work- ers had at some point contracted the virus. All told, more than 30 thousand New Yorkers died, many of whom were not able to conduct their work from home. The parade seemed to signal not only a return to a New York where a massive crowd might be more of an aggravation rather than a horror, but a wider recognition of the type of labor the city values and the people who perform it. “It definitely sends a message of rebirth. And nobody does it like New York,” said Edward Grayson, a Ridge- wood-native who became commissioner of the city’s sanitation department as New York grappled with some of the worst months of the pandemic. “In addition to the sanitation worker, utility worker, and the nurses, look at food delivery, look at people that were bringing things home for us so that we could sur- vive,” he added. Notably absent were members of the city’s EMS ser- vice, who skipped the parade to show their displeasure over long-delayed contract negotiations and low start- ing salaries. Ricky Zhu, a Flushing resident who worked with the city’s test and trace program throughout the pandemic, said that the parade was a meaningful recognition of health care workers that wouldn’t have been possible without a vaccine. Queens led the charge toward the city’s reopening, with at least 62-percent of residents having received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vac- cine. “When you’re quarantined, you don’t really see that gratitude,” Zhu said. “There’s more love in this city than hate. Polling consistently shows a large bipartisan majority of Americans support ending life tenure. This likely reflects eroding public confidence as the court routinely issues decisions down parti- san lines on the day’s most controversial issues. Although ideology has long influenced Supreme Court decisions, today’s court is unusual because all the conservative justices are Republicans and all the liberal justices are Democrats. In April 2021, President Biden formed a commit- tee to examine reforming the Supreme Court, includ- ing term-limiting justices. To end the justices’ life ten- ure would likely mean a constitutional amendment requiring approval from two-thirds of both houses of Congress and three-fourths of U.S. states. The second batch of unofficial results from the BOE released late Tuesday night factored in absentee ballots and showed Richards ahead of Crowley by a little more than 1,000 votes follow- ing the ranked-choice count’s redistribution of ballots. Though the counting isn’t over – there are currently around 950 absentee ballots that can be “cured” or corrected by voters citywide – and the results haven’t yet been certified, Richard’s victo- ry is all but shored up. Freddie Berg, who formerly practiced at Berg Law Firm LLC before having his license suspend- ed in 2019, was arraigned before Queens Crimi- nal Court Judge Saul Stein on July 6 on conspira- cy and scheming to defraud charges, in addition to the grand larceny charge. The 61-year-old lawyer whose practice was in Jamaica, allegedly began conning future home buyers in 2016, when a woman was looking to purchase a home in Flushing. The woman called an unapprehended person who enlisted Berg as a lawyer for the property, according to Katz. The woman put a $400,000 down payment on the home only to be told the closing date had passed, according to the charges. She never had any of her money returned and instead Berg’s law firm made a series of large withdrawals – totalling $337,500 – and spent money at car dealerships and travel agencies, the charges state.
