INTRODUCTION

2018 has been quite a milestone year for the Doc Lounge Head Office in Malmö, carrying out our first two Swedish releases (Punk Voyage and Leslie Brinner) as an official Swedish distributor and kicked off a major new project - Doc Lounge Impact Hub with the goal of developing innovative distribution focusing on outreach and impact. All while finishing off the very successful Doc Lounge Prison Project, and continuing on working with Doc Lounge Caucasus, Moving Docs and Doc Lounge Live.

The network of Doc Lounge clubs is still going strong, delivering high qual- ity events reaching out to broad audiences all over the Nordic countries and in spring we welcomed Doc Lounge Umeå to the family. In total, 73 films from 33 different countries were screened around the network.

At Doc Lounge Malmö, we keep on working on local community building and expanding our events to give the best experience possible to our audi- ence.

Read on to dive further into all the exciting activities we have been up to during 2018.

1.3.5 Doc Lounge Malmö

Doc Lounge Malmö is our flagship club and showcase for the Doc Lounge brand and concept, and a key part of the Doc Lounge head office. By working hard to show good numbers in screenings and audience, as well as delivering innovative events and creative audience development strategies, Doc Lounge Malmö serves as an inspiration for other Doc Lounge clubs. We encourage new Doc Lounge project managers to visit a Doc Lounge Malmö event as part of their train- ing, and frequently invites potential collaboration partners to visit our events. On top of this, Doc Lounge Malmö is our main platform for trying out new projects and ideas, such as live streaming concept Doc Lounge Live.

Since 2010, Doc Lounge Malmö have held the event program at Ba- bel, a former church which is now a popular concert, club and culture venue. Every year we strive towards developing our collaboration with our venue, and work together on new ways of using the space to cre- ate interactive settings and visually complement the film screenings.

1.3.6 The development projects

Doc Lounge constantly works to be a catalyst for new innovative ideas on how documentaries can be screened, experienced and distributed. Since the start we strive towards being a frontrunner in the field, and we are continuously working on new projects to gain new knowledge, to Doc Lounge, the wider documentary community and industry. During recent years we have worked with the pan-eu- ropean distribution project Moving Docs, run a tour of screenings and workshops in womens' prisons, developed the live broadcast- ing concept Doc Lounge Live and created the exchange project Doc Lounge Caucasus.

3.3 SWEDISH DISTRIBUTION: LESLIE BRINNER

In November Doc Lounge released the Swedish film Leslie on Fire (Stefan Berg) about the musician Leslie Tay. The film had its world premiere as the opening film at Nordisk Panorama in Malmö, Sep- tember 2018 and was prescreened at Doc Lounges around Sweden in October. Two gala premiere events were organized during the premiere week, one in Malmö and one in Stockholm, where Leslie Tay and the director Stefan Berg were present. For press work, we collaborated with the same publicist as Leslie Tay, Ebba Lindqvist PR, with very good results.

The film was screened at seven Doc Lounges and on 13 cinemas all over Sweden. In addition, the film was also a part of Doc Lounge Impact Hub and an ambitious impact strategy was built around the theme of masculinity with the target audience young men. 3.5 DOC LOUNGE POP UP

To further extend our network of screening partners outside of the official Doc Lounge clubs, and crease our reach, screenings and total audience, we have developed the Doc Lounge Pop Up concept. For Doc Lounge Pop Up, screening partners such as libraries, schools and culture houses have booked films from the Doc Lounge Official selection and created their own, local Doc Lounge events. Partners during 2018 have included Kulturhuset Björnen (Åstorp), Kulturkvarteret (Kristianstad), Skurup Folk- högskola (Skurup), Båstad bibliotek (Båstad). We are currently evaluating this model, and how to develop it further in the years to come.

We are currently working on strategies for further developing the website to better reflect all screenings and activities taking place within Doc Lounge, i.e. cinema screenings or workshops within Doc Lounge Impact Hub. For the Doc Lounge Impact Hub project, we will also create specific additional websites for the films in the project.

4.1.3 Social Media

Our Doc Lounge head office Facebook page (2200 followers) serves as an extension to our website by promoting local Doc Lounge events, spreading news and communicate with others in the industry. When possible we create ads and promote our posts to reach a broader, and/ or more specific audience. In addition to this, every club in the Doc Lounge network has its own local facebook page where they communi- cate their events and keep in touch with their audience.

4.1.4 Film releases and campaigns for Punk Voyage and Leslie on Fire

A big part of our marketing and communications work for 2018 have been regarding our two full-scale cinema releases, Punk Voyage in February and Leslie on Fire in November. Working with these we have gained a huge amount of knowledge on strategic decisions as well as producing press and marketing material such as banners and video for social media. For both releases, we collaborated with experienced PR companies. Especially for Leslie on Fire, this was a great help in getting coverage in the core media. As Leslie on Fire also was part of the new Doc Lounge Impact Hub project, a bigger campaign for the release of the film was made possible.

We lost audience during the spring season, so one of the most important and maybe biggest challenges for Maja Goffe as the new project manager was to make sure that the audience came back to our regular screenings. We can see on our statistic that we had a fantastic autumn season, with fewer screenings than what we had in the spring, but with a bigger audience over the season in total. 2018 we started our autumn season a little bit later than previous years, instead we had a special screening in August (Gudrun - Konsten att vara människa with Doc Lounge Live). When the tickets to that screening where released we invited our audience to get gold cards for the whole autumn season. We also announced our gold card campaign right after the screening of Gudrun - Konsten att vara människa, to keep the interest in both our new and old audience. By selling gold cards early in the season and be ge- nerous with the pricing, we have managed to build a stable crowd of re- gular visitors during the autumn. We sold 127 gold cards during the entire year, a little decrease from 2018 (139) but still more compared to 74 sold gold cards in 2015, and 95 in 2016. That shows that we have a dedicated and committed audience who are willing to invest in us, and they are a really important group of Doc Lounge ambassadors.

6.2 EXPANSION

At the end of year 2018, 17 Doc Lounge clubs were active around the network. The clubs were divided between the countries as follows: Ten clubs in Sweden, five clubs in Finland, one club in Norway and one in Denmark.

During 2018 we have opened up activities in Umeå and re-opened in Växjö and Östersund with new collaboration partners. Unfortunately, Doc Lounge Kalmar, Bergen, Volda and Trondheim was put on hold and did not do any screenings during the autumn.

The interest in our concept is still strong and we have ongoing conversa- tions with new partners, for example Vaasa in Finland.

6.3 MEET UP: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Every year, Doc Lounge head office arrange a meetup and invite all Doc Lounge project managers. The purpose of the meetup is to give the network training and professional development and give all project managers a chance to meet and exchange experiences.

In 2018 the meet-up was held in Helsinki during Doc Point. The meetup was organized and co-hosted by the Finnish Doc Lounge Hub and inclu- ded a one day workshop in audience development and outreach, as well as networking events, dinner and a social sauna Sunday. By holding the meetup at a documentary festival, we create a creative and extensive platform with equal time for festival experience and industry, as a time for exchanging experiences. 7.2 CREATIVE COLLABORATE

The spring season had a focus on creative collaborations - as an extension of the art focus previous year, but now with both art and fa- shion. During spring 2018 art gallery FRANK had three specific events where they were given free hands to create something at our venue and interpret the theme of the evening and film. A collaboration the brought new influences to our venue and also created new audiences and experiences for Doc Lounge Malmö.

Filmmaking is very much about identity and expression, like fashion. They often use each other as a means to bring the vision to life. Since Malmö has a strong fashion scene and the two project managers that created the spring season has a background in the fashion industry, they chose to build on the overall experience that Doc Lounge provi- des and at the same time lift local talent. In other words, win-win.

Young and well-established Malmö designers were selected, each week pieces of their designs were shown on stage by our project manager duo. Designers were paired with suitable films, based on subject and expression to add to the whole and the feeling of the evening. The designers was selected with focus on themes such as gender equality, diversity and innovation and this was symbolized in the form of cross-border patterns, non-existent design and focus on sustainable textiles.

For example, in November we screened the film Inventing Tomorrow. To this event we had specially invited teenagers from the science associ- ation International Young Physicists Tournament (IYPT). The teenagers that took part of the screening not only had the chance to see a great movie and got to know Doc Lounge Malmö as a concept and place to be, they also had the opportunity to speak to scientists and represen- tatives for Malmö University. Overall, it was an informative and inspiring evening.

Another example we screened the film Team Hurricane on UN:s Inter- national Children's Day. The workshops were very well received and the numbers of screen- ings and audience in the Georgian rural areas was increased during the autumn as a direct result of the knowledge, tools and inspiration they got during the workshop.

8.3.2 Leslie Brinner campaign

Leslie on Fire follows musician Leslie Tay in his quest to create and release his debut album. But even more so, it’s a very personal story, portraying what it’s like to grow up and find your own identity, as a musician but also as a human and a young man.

The impact campaign focus on the thematics of gender equality, masculinity norms and macho culture in particular, with the goal of using the film as a tool for opening up a discussion on what it means to be a man/boy and how that image can be widened. The target group is young boys/men. The impact campaign kicked off with some initial activities in the end of 2018 (see below) and will continue on during 2019.

Leslie on Fire Impact Activities 2018 • Focus-groups with representatives from the target groups • Establishing collaborations and assigning ambassadors • Develop workshops models together with partners • Case study event and theme week on masculinity with P3 Din Gata and Arena 305 • Initiated work with a discussion guide in collaboration with Swedish Film Institute • Presented a case study of Leslie on Fire at Swedish Film Institute’s Department for Children and Young People • Establishing screening partners for activities during spring 2019

Since 2016 we are asking our Norwegian partners for a service fee as a contribution financially to the network activities and overhead costs of the organization. However all Norwegian clubs except one, Oslo, closed during 2018 which gave us less service income than expected.

As in 2015, 2016 and 2017 Doc Lounge director Maja Lindquist has been taking on the role as Head of programme for Nordisk Panorama Film Festival, as a part of her employment at Doc Lounge. For this Doc Lounge have invoiced Nordisk Panorama for three-month full-time

40 DOC LOUNGE ANNUAL REPORT 2018 9. FINANCES 2018

9.2 DOC LOUNGE MALMÖ FINANCES 2018

During 2018, Doc Lounge Malmö activities were financed by Malmö Kulturstöd (364 000), Film i Skåne (36 000), ABF Malmö (15 000), our own ticket sales and sold events outside of the regular programme (approx. 150 000).

The operational grant from Malmö Kulturstöd is mainly used to cover costs for Doc Lounge Malmö screenings and events, and in some parts it also contributes to the overhead costs of our Malmö Head Office, such as administrative costs, office space and accounting.

The Doc Lounge Malmö finances ended up with a substantial ne- gative result for 2018, due to a combination of somewhat reduced core funding from both Film i Skåne and ABF, in combination with the project manager shifts, resulting in increased staff costs. To create a more sustainable work role for the project manager, we have also adjusted the expected income from ticket sales and sold produc- tions. Although the negative result will be covered from a buffer from previous years positive result, it is clear how Doc Lounge Malmö is under-financed and in great need of raised core funding to be able to maintain the high-quality level of our events and our qualified staff.
