Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again?
Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again? INTRODUCrION "Baseball is everybody's business."' We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. A twenty- year-old struck out twenty batters in a game, the record for a nine inning 7 game; a perfect game was pitched;' and Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won his unprecedented fifth Cy Young award.9 Also, the Yankees won 1. Flood v. Kuhn, 309 F. Supp. 793, 797 (S.D.N.Y. 1970). 2. Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs and Sammy Sosa hit 66. Frederick C. Klein, There Was More to the Baseball Season Than McGwire, WALL ST. Al Brancato This Article Was Written by David E
Al Brancato This article was written by David E. Skelton The fractured skull Philadelphia Athletics shortstop Skeeter Newsome suffered on April 9, 1938 left a gaping hole in the club’s defense. Ten players, including Newsome after he recovered, attempted to fill the void through the 1939 season. One was Al Brancato, a 20- year-old September call-up from Class-A ball who had never played shortstop professionally. Enticed by the youngster’s cannon right arm, Athletics manager Connie Mack moved him from third base to short in 1940. On June 21, after watching Brancato retire Chicago White Sox great Luke Appling on a hard-hit grounder, Mack exclaimed, “There’s no telling how good that boy is going to be.”1 Though no one in the organization expected the diminutive (5-feet-nine and 188 pounds) Philadelphia native’s offense to cause fans to forget former Athletics infield greats Home Run Baker or Eddie Collins, the club was satisfied that Brancato could fill in defensively. “You keep on fielding the way you are and I’ll do the worrying about your hitting,” Mack told Brancato in May 1941.2 Ironically, the youngster’s defensive skills would fail him before the season ended. In September, as the club spiraled to its eighth straight losing season, “baseball’s grand old gentleman” lashed out. “The infielders—[Benny] McCoy, Brancato and [Pete] Suder—are terrible,” Mack grumbled. “They have hit bottom. Suder is so slow it is painful to watch him; Brancato is erratic and McCoy is—oh, he’s just McCoy, that’s all.” 3 After the season ended Brancato enlisted in the US Navy following the country’s entry into the Second World War. -

Sermon November 6, 2016 | All Saints | Luke 6:20-31 | Peter Lane The Cubs won three in a row! Huh? Come on! Go Cubs Go. You might be wondering when I will get to saints. "Blessed are In 1929, my maternal grandfather, Dennis Carlson, then you who weep now, for you will laugh.” “Woe to you who are seven years old, the son of Swedish immigrants, moved from laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.” I imagine you Minneapolis to Chicago, living only a mile from Cubs Park. Atlanta Braves Clippings Wednesday, May 6, 2020 Braves.com Braves' Top 5 center fielders: Bowman's take By Mark Bowman No one loves a good debate quite like baseball fans, and with that in mind, we asked each of our beat reporters to rank the top five players by position in the history of their franchise, based on their career while playing for that club. These rankings are for fun and debate purposes only … if you don’t agree with the order, participate in the Twitter poll to vote for your favorite at this position. Here is Mark Bowman’s ranking of the top 5 center fielders in Braves history. Next week: Right fielders. 1. Andruw Jones, 1996-2007 Key fact: Stands with Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays and Ichiro Suzuki as the only outfielders to win 10 consecutive Gold Glove Awards The 60.9 bWAR (Baseball Reference’s WAR model) Andruw Jones produced during his 11 full seasons (1997-2007) with Atlanta ranked third in the Majors, trailing only Alex Rodriguez (85.7) and Barry Bonds (79.2). Chipper Jones was fourth at 58.9. Within this span, the Braves center fielder led all Major Leaguers with a 26.7 Defensive bWAR. Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez ranked second with 16.5. The next closest outfielder was Mike Cameron (9.6). Along with establishing himself as one of the greatest defensive outfielders baseball has ever seen during his time with Atlanta, Jones became one of the best power hitters in Braves history. He ranks fourth in franchise history with 368 homers, and he set the club’s single-season record with 51 homers in 2005. -
A Long, Strange Trip to Cubs World Series
A long, strange trip to Cubs World Series By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Friday, October 28, 2016 The Cubs appear a thoroughly dominant team with no holes, and certainly no “Cubbie Occurrences,” in playing the Cleveland Indi- ans in the generations-delayed World Series. But, to steal the millionth time from a song- writer, what a long, strange trip is has been. Truth is stranger than fiction in the Cubs Universe. On my own 45-year path of watch- ing games and talking to the newsmakers at Wrigley Field, I have been a witness to: Burt Hooton slugged a grand-slam homer off Tom “Terrific” Seaver in an 18- 5 pounding of the New York Mets in 1972. Hillary Clinton throws out first ball at Wrigley Field in 1994. On my 19th birthday, May 27, 1974, lefty Ken “Failing” Frailing pitched a complete-game 15-hitter in a 12-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants. A few weeks later, Rich Reuschel tossed a 12-hit shutout against the Lumber Com- pany Pittsburgh Pirates. In mid-Aug. 1974, the Dodgers had 24 hits by the sixth inning in an 18-8 victory over the Cubs. Apparently peeved, the Pirates in late 1975 racked up the most lopsided shutout in history, 22-0 over the Cubs. Reuschel started and gave up eight runs in the first. Brother Paul Reuschel mopped up in the ninth. Rennie Stennett went 7-for-7. Amazingly, less than a month previously, the Reuschels teamed for the only all- brother shutout in history in a 7-0 victory over the Dodgers (also witnessed here). -
