English Goldsmiths and Their Marks: a History of the Goldsmiths And : ENGLISH GOLDSMITHS AND THEIR MARKS: A HISTORY OF THE GOLDSMITHS AND PLATE\i\10RKERSPLATEWORKERS OF ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, AND IRELAND; WITH OVER ELEVEN THOUSAND MARKS, REPRODUCED IN FAC-SIMILE FROM AUTHENTIC EXAMPLES OF PLATE, AND TABLES OF DATE-LETTERS AND OTHER HALL-MARKS EMPLOYED IN THE ASSAY OFFICES OF THE UNITED KINGDOM. BY CHARLES JAMES JACKSON, F.S.A., OF THE MIDDLE TEMPLE,TEl\lPLE, BARRISTER-AT-LAW.BARRISTER -AT-LAW. LONDONLONDON: MACMILLAN AND CO. LIMITED.Limited. 1905. reserved. [ A II rights reserved. ] .'S t — Names Names 0/of London GoldsmithGoldsmiths.s. 212177 most part, the addresses are different, and although the person may be the same, the reverse is possible. Many names are repeated in the Goldsmiths' books reason Goldsmiths' books by reason of the re-registration of marks;marks ; but wherwher- ever it has been ascertained that the same person-notperson—not being associated with another-hasanother—has re-entered his name, the repetition has been avoided, except in the case of Paul de Lamerie and a few others, where a change in the spelling of the name appears to be noteworthy. Some names have been found recorded in one year only;only ; others in two years, one immediately following the other, or at very short intervals. It should not be concluded in such cases that the goldsmith worked for a period no longer than is thereby indicated, because marks have been found to have been in use for a much longer period than is denoted by records. In many instances marks have been used before registration, and in others they have been used by successors after the death of the goldsmiths in whose names they had been entered :-: (" EaEarliestrliest Mention" and"and "Latest Latest MentionMention " refer to ththee eaearliestrliest and llatestatest mention whiwhichch hahass beenbeen noted;noted ; d. means died;died ; c. means circa.) t;d Latest ~ 0 Latest NAME OF GOLDSMITH. ].~ Remarks. LORD BISHOP OF LICHFIELD THESE MEMORIALS OF HIS NATIVE COUNTY ARE BY PERMISSION DEDICATED PREFACE H ILST not professing to be a complete survey of Staffordshire this volume, we hope, will W afford Memorials both of some interesting people and of some venerable and distinctive institutions; and as most of its contributors are either genealogically linked with those persons or are officially connected with the institutions, the book ought to give forth some gleams of light which have not previously been made public. Staffordshire is supposed to have but little actual history. It has even been called the playground of great people who lived elsewhere. But this reproach will not bear investigation.
