In her presentation and written piece, “What He Saw / What She Saw — West Side Story and Other Views of Dance and Dancers Behind the Scenes: Discovering Photography by Jerome Robbins and Martha Swope,” Julie is looking at “how two photographers in 1957 with different back- grounds and perspectives recorded and reacted to the making of West Side Story; what photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson called the decisive moment, when everything changed, what brought these two together and The Jerome Robbins how it shaped their careers.” • Robert Greskovic, who writes about dance for the Wall Street Journal, has previously presented his work at our public presentations in the Bruno Dance Research Fellowship Walter Auditorium, and can be spotted frequently in our special collections by Kathleen Leary reading room working on a variety of projects.

This Encores! Special Event, directed by frequent Sondheim collaborator John Doyle, with choreography by Parker Esse and musical supervision by David Loud, was conceived by Peter Gethers, Jack Viertel and John Doyle, and will run for seven performances, November 13 – 17 at City Center. The anonymous men and women who sing and dance help create the spectacle that is an intrinsic part of the musical. While the chorus line of fifty that characterized the revues in the early part of the twentieth-century has dwindled, for economic and aesthetic reasons, it has not disappeared. The role of the chorus has changed from a titillating backdrop for headlining stars to an accomplished ensemble of dancer/singers who may be the featured performers in their own right. This dissertation creates a cultural history of the chorus as it has evolved from the The Black Crook in 1866 to the beginning of the twenty–first-century.
