Annual Report: 04/01/18 – 03/31/19 MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR AND RESEARCH CHAIR

Dear Members and Supporters,

Over the last year GROSH completed its 5-year Strategic Plan with input from faculty, students, workplace partners, and community interest groups. To reach our 2023 targets, GROSH has set strategic goals that build on existing research strengths and infrastructure, with objectives for long-term sustainability at our core. In 2018 we were also recognized by the Ministry of Labour as a Health and Safety System Partner, the only Occupational Health and Safety Research Centre in with this designation. With this designation, GROSH will also receive 5 years of core, operational funding; ensuring we have the resources needed to meet our strategic objectives. We invite you to read the 2018-23 Strategic Plan (https://crosh.ca/about/strategic-plan/) and reach out to us if you wish to collaborate to improve health, safety, and wellness for workers in northern Ontario. In 2018 GROSH also celebrated its 10th anniversary. People with passion and perseverance started building GROSH in 2008 and in December 2018, we gathered together to both celebrate our achievements to date and to honour some of the people that helped to create GROSH; it was a fabulous event. Read further in this report to see photos. GROSH also co-hosted two community events this year. In October we co-hosted CROSH's 9th and the Association for Canadian Ergonomists' 49th Conference, entitled 'from Research to Practice to Prevention,' with over 150 attendees. In February, we co-hosted, with Laurentian University, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This is the first time, since being introduced by the United Nations in 2015, that Sudbury celebrated this day. The event showcased the achievements of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine working in Sudbury and with GROSH, inspiring over 120 local elementary students by introducing them to female mentors of today. This past year also saw the ribbon cutting for the newest building on campus: the Cliff Fielding Research Innovation and Engineering Building. CROSH's newest laboratory, the Workplace Simulator, is housed in this facility and will be fully operational by the fall of 2019. As we work towards meeting the objectives outlined in the 2018-23 GROSH Strategic Plan, we would like to recognize our staff, researchers, and students who continue to work towards solving relevant workplace health and safety issues. We also acknowledge the countless volunteer hours of our Advisory and Executive Board members, for their continued dedication and leadership. Finally, we want to thank our community, government, and workplace supporters who continuously advocated for GROSH over the last 10 years and continue to champion our Mission and Vision today. We look forward to another 10 years of strong partnerships and innovative research initiatives addressing occupational health and safety research relevant to northern Ontario.

Sincerely,
