Black Africans of Arabic culture Long before the beginning of what we call black slavery, black Africans arrived in North America. There were black Africans among Columbus ’s crew on his first journey to the New World in 1492.Even the more militant of the earliest Spanish and Portuguese conquerors, such as Cortes and Pizarro, had black people by their side. In some cases, even the colonialist leaders themselves were black, Estebanico for example, who conducted an expedition to what is now Mexico, and Juan Valiente, who led the Spaniards when they conquered Chile. There were black colonialists among the first Spanish settlers in Hispaniola (today Haiti/Dominican Republic). Between 1502 and 1518, hundreds of blacks migrated to the New World, to work in the mines and for other reasons. It is interesting to note that not all of the black colonists of the first wave were bearers of African culture, but rather of Arabic culture. They were born and raised on the Iberian Peninsula (today Spain, Portugal, and Gibraltar) and had, over the course of generations, exchanged their original African culture for the Moorish (Arabic)culture. Spain had been under Arabic rule since the 8th century, and when the last stronghold of the Moors fell in 1492,the rulers of the reunified Spain – King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella – gave the go-ahead for the epoch-making voyages of Columbus. Long before, the Arabs had kept and traded Negro slaves. We can see them in old paintings, depicted in various settings of medieval European society. -

Dissatisfied with history the searching mind asks again, "And Ijcfore that, what?" The records of the careful digging of archeologists reveal, that many of the customs and hahits of the ancients are not so different in their essence from ours of today. We know that in man's rise from complete savagery, in his first fumblings toward civilization there was an impulse toward beauty and toward an expression of it. We know too, that his earliest expression was to dance to his own instinctive rhythms. I ater he sang. Still later he made instruments to accompany his dancing and his singing. At first he made pictures of his dancing and his instruments. Later he wrote about the danc- ing and his instruments. Later he wrote about the dancing and sing- ing and the music. Men have uncovered many of his pictures and his writings. From the pictures we can see what the instruments were like. We can, perhaps, reconstruct them or similar ones and hear the (luality of sound which they supplied. But no deciphering of the writings has yet disclosed to rs what combinations or sequences of sounds were used, nor what accents marked his rhythms. While one man is digging in the earth to turn up what records he may find of man's life "before that," another is studying those races who today are living in similar primitive circumstances. -

Michael Schnitzius Diatonic-Collection Disruption in the Melodic Material of Alban Berg‟s Op. 5, no. 2 The pre-serial Expressionist music of the early twentieth century composed by Arnold Schoenberg and his pupils, most notably Alban Berg and Anton Webern, has famously provoked many music-analytical dilemmas that have, themselves, spawned a wide array of new analytical approaches over the last hundred years. Schoenberg‟s own published contributions to the analytical understanding of this cryptic musical style are often vague, at best, and tend to describe musical effects without clearly explaining the means used to create them. His concept of “the emancipation of the dissonance” has become a well known musical idea, and, as Schoenberg describes the pre-serial music of his school, “a style based on [the premise of „the emancipation of the dissonance‟] treats dissonances like consonances and renounces a tonal center.”1 The free treatment of dissonance and the renunciation of a tonal center are musical effects that are simple to observe in the pre-serial music of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, and yet the specific means employed in this repertoire for avoiding the establishment of a perceived tonal center are difficult to describe. Both Allen Forte‟s “Pitch-Class Set Theory” and the more recent approach of Joseph Straus‟s “Atonal Voice Leading” provide excellently specific means of describing the relationships of segmented musical ideas with one another. However, the question remains: why are these segmented ideas the types of musical ideas that the composer wanted to use, and what role do they play in renouncing a tonal center? Incantations Concerto da Camera for Piano and Ensemble (2015) The balance of traditional and progressive musical parameters through the concertante treatment of the piano Analytical Commentary Graham Waterhouse A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Birmingham City University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2018 The Faculty of Arts, Design and Media, Birmingham City University (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) Abstract The aim of this research project is to investigate concertante techniques in composition with reference both to traditional models and recent works in the genre, and to redefine a contemporary understanding of concertante writing in preparation for the principal work of this thesis, Incantations for Piano and Ensemble. Starting with the contradictory meanings of the word “concertare” (to compete and to unite), as well as with a fleeting, non-musical vision of combining disparate elements, I investigate diverse styles and means of combining soloist (mainly piano) and ensemble. My aim is to expand my compositional “vocabulary”, in order to meet the demands of writing a work for piano and ensemble. This involved composing supporting works, both of concerto-like nature (with more clearly defined functions of soloist and tutti), as well as chamber music (with material equally divided between the players). Part of the research was to ascertain to what extent these two apparent opposites could be combined to create a hybrid concerto/chamber music genre in which the element of virtuosity transcends the purely bravura, to embrace a common adaptability, where soloist and ensemble players are called upon to assume a variety of roles, from the accompanimental to the soloistic. -

ABSTRACT The present study sought to provide a detailed examination of the history and development of music education in Kuwait. The history of the four teacher-training institutions and music education in schools are discussed. That includes the history of the Music General Supervision Department and its music activities. Additionally, the study examined the perception of music education in Kuwait historically, and surveyed parents and students‟ perceptions of music and music education in Kuwait public schools. There were 244 students and 169 parents responses to 260 questionnaires. Parents were asked about their knowledge of the music education curriculum and students were asked if they like music and music education or not, and how would they feel if there is no music education in school. -

CHAPTER Two H e x a t o n i c C y c l e s Chapter 1 proposed that triads could be related by voice leading, independently of roots, diatonic collections, and other central premises of classical theory. Th is chapter pursues that proposal, considering two triads to be closely related if they share two common tones and their remaining tones are separated by semitone. Motion between them thus involves a single unit of work. Positioning each triad beside its closest relations produces a preliminary map of the triadic universe. Th e map serves some analytical purposes, which are explored in this chapter. Because it is not fully connected, it will be supplemented with other relations developed in chapters 4 and 5. Th e simplicity of the model is a pedagogical advantage, as it presents a circum- scribed environment in which to develop some central concepts, terms, and modes of representation that are used throughout the book. Th e model highlights the central role of what is traditionally called the chromatic major-third relation, although that relation is theorized here without reference to harmonic roots. It draws attention to the contrary-motion property that is inherent in and exclusive to triadic pairs in that relation. Th at property, I argue, underlies the association of chromatic major-third relations with supernatural phenomena and altered states of consciousness in the early nineteenth century. Finally, the model is suffi cient to provide preliminary support for the central theoretical claim of this study: that the capacity for minimal voice leading between chords of a single type is a special property of consonant triads, resulting from their status as minimal perturbations of perfectly even augmented triads. -

Comparing and contrasting intonation from various cultures could give insight into the question of learned versus innate preferences in the perception of music, and into the cultural development of musical traditions. However, methods for analyzing intonation in Western music have not been generalized to non-Western contexts. Flexible and non-discrete tuning used in cultures such as Arabic maqam music pose a chal- lenge for analyzing intonation. This paper attempts to generalize Stolzenburg’s “Periodicity” method and Gill and Purves’ “Similarity” method for microtonal music, and finds that they are ill-suited for the analysis of Arabic music. An alternative approach is developed, which analyzes the relative intonation of a series of consecutive notes. This approach reveals that Arabic intonation is fundamentally different from Western and Chinese intonation. -

Measures 18–23, in particular, manifest several elements that return repeatedly in the course of the work, and consequently a space defined by the objects and transformations characteristic of this passage can provide a framework for interpreting transformational relations throughout the piece. This paper provides such a space, in an interactive format that allows the reader to explore grouping structure within the passage. The space is then expanded to accommodate later passages involving similar motivic material. Received November 2008 Introduction [1.1] Clermont Pépin (1926–2006), a prolific and influential twentieth-century Canadian composer, incorporates elements from serialism, jazz, and neo-classicism, but like many Québécois composers of his generation also employs the repetition and development of smaller atonal intervallic motives. By interpreting these intervallic motives transformationally (that is, understanding them as a series of transformations rather than as a grouping of pitch classes), motivic repetition can be depicted as a series of moves through a space. The structure of the space, its objects and transformations, and the path through the space all express characteristic elements of the associated musical passage.
