Chairman Poe welcomed the incoming members of the Board and visitors. This being the first meeting of the new Board, those

present were asked to Introduce themselves.

Mr.Thomas Bashford, our representative on the City Council,

met with the Board to discuss the proposed plan to create the his­

toric district to cover Oakwood. Mr.Bashford stated that there has

been one meeting with the city Planning Commission and another will

be held next Sunday,January 12 th. He said that the Historic Dis­

trict starts with the people, then receives the approval of the

City Council. The City Council voted to have the Public Works Com­

mittee conduct a study. Chairman Oliver Williams has agreed to

have the proposal brought up on January 14th. Mr.Bashford will pre­

sent the boundaries agreed upon by the Society as the area to be

designated the Historic Oakwood District. The boundaries used by

Archives and History have been used as general boundaries at this

time. Chairman Poe called a special meeting on Sunday, January 12th,

to determine the specific boundaries. The historic commission must

decide what exterior changes and renovations may be done after the

historic district is established. Guide lines were established by

Raleigh Historic Commission in an ordinance 1973-74.

Mr.Bill Hube,President of the Eden Planning Group, distributed

copies of The Oakwood Plan H to all members of the Board. This

gives a.Comprehensive Plan For Oakwood- detailing scope of work and

benefits realized, Mr,Hube asked that notations be made in these

notebooks of any ideas or suggestions that would implement the plan

The Society goes on record as being Interested in planning by pro­

fessionals .

Mrs.Vallie Henderson reported on the status of the Tucker prop

erty. She has catalogued items in the home that are being contrib­

uted by the Tucker heirs and items that will be on loan for use in

the house. The house can be used with only intensive clean-up and

some necessary work in the kitchen. Bids will be accepted on Tues­

day for demolition of the two houses on Person Street. Work will

begin immediately. Foundations will be started as soon as possible.

A Park Ranger is living in the house at this time for security pur­

poses, Mrs.Henderson has received offers by interested persons to

decorate individual rooms. The house should be ready for use by lat

spring® The committee to work on this project., appointed by the City t includes Bob Hoadley, Mrs.Vallie Henderson, Mrs. Peggy Laino,

Mrs.Parker and Sara Greene from Mordecai.

The minutes of the October meeting were approved.

Tne report of the outgoing Treasurer indicated the increased

numbers of visitors attending the Christmas fours. In w -.- 77

and 60 complimentary- $ 1,866.00. The cash on hand at this time is

^ 3,849^07It was suggested that the Society open a savings account.

The Society must have Federal Tax Exempt Status for future

erowth and expansion in its endeavors. Preparing the necessary fornr

wi'1.1 require 4 to 6 hours work by a CPA. A motion was maae by oharies

Parlato^that an amount up to « 150.00 be appropriated to cover this

expense. The motion was seconded and passed.

Chairman Poe commended Mrs. Ruth Little-Stokes for compiling

tributed from Mordecai House, Archives and History, Chamber ol Com­

merce, Legislative Building, Art Museum and other suitable locations

Three corrections are to be made by hand on the brochures, in

A motion was made by Harvey BaumSa^dner. that.

Mrs.Henderson reported that the entrance to Boundary Street, <

a triangle of land owned by the City, is to De beautified and main­ tained by the City. An estimate of ^ 360.U has been made for the cost of materials" to construct a fence on the area. A motion was made by Charles Parlato to appropriate an amount up to ^ for this project# Mrs#Henderson stated that the Oakwood harden oluo would participate In this project*

Changes in the By-laws were discussed and approved. The duties

of the Secretary will be shared by the Corresponding Secretary, the

Recording Secretary and the Treasurer, The Beginning of the Society

year will be changed to January, giving the Board an opportunity to

continue their duties through December and the annual Christmas Tour»

Mrs.Barbara McCloud presented an idea for a project-the pub­

lishing of a cookbook. The Board showed interest and asked her to

bring back specific information to th© next meeting.

Chairman Poe thanked those present for their interest and pro­

mised a busy year for all.

The meeting was then adjourned* .

The Oat.wood Garden Gleb has given $50.00 for the Christmas lighting of. our Meeting

House.

/ X Terry Dangler, a landscape, architect, has offered his services free of charge in

helping with the garden park project. This was in response to a newspaper

a r t i c 1 e .

A Bicentennial grant renuest was submitted on August 7b for funds for Lbe garden park

in the amount of $.5000.00.

* City Council referred our request to maintain the garden park to Harks and Recreation

Advisory Committee. Counc i 1 seemed to favor our offer to give t he park to the

City. ‘

w * The newsletter is being prepared for the printer by Giuna and Gary Norton. It will

he sent out in October.
