JC BEKKER - Group Winemaker

JC Bekker presides over the entire DGB wine portfolio with tremendous intelligible understanding of the business, creative and scientific perspectives of viticulture and winemaking garnered from years of asserted study and practical experience. As a graduate of the University of with Honours degrees in Viticulture and Oenology as well as a Masters in Wine Business Management from UCT Graduate school of Business and the University of Adelaide Australia, JC is highly regarded and widely respected for his multi-faceted knowledge and scope of talents. JC worked as viticulturist for KWV before his appointment at Boschendal wines. As Cellar Master, JC quickly built a solid reputation with several local and international awards leading to Boschendal’s ultimate selection as “South African Winery of the Year” at the International Wine and Spirit Challenge in London in 2004.

RICHARD DUCKITT - Red Winemaker

Having grown up on a farm in the Darling district, wine has always been a natural passion for Richard Duckitt. He pursued this passion and graduated from Elsenburg College in Stellenbosch with a Diploma in Viticulture and Cellar Technology. He spent his first harvest at Muratie wine estate in Stellenbosch, and has since completed two harvests in California and one in Bordeaux where he garnered valuable cutting edge best practice experience that has stood him in good scientific and creative stead to this day. With high ambitions, Richard signed up as winemaker at Vineyards in 2005, and has since completed 9 vintages at Franschhoek Vineyards. He became part of the DGB family when the cooperation was acquired by DGB in 2008, and become a private producer.

LIZELLE GERBER - White Winemaker

Lizelle Gerber is proof that dynamite comes in small packages. As the feisty woman behind the white and Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines at Boschendal since 2006, Lizelle has established herself as one of the Cape’s hottest winemaking talents. The diminutive winemaker exploded onto the scene in 2000 during her tenure at Avontuur Estate raking in an avalanche of awards and accolades for her wines. You might never guess that her career began in the Military before a chance visit to a friend at Elsenburg College propelled her attention towards wine.

STEPHAN JOUBERT - Viticulturist

As Boschendal’s viticulturist Stephan Joubert is responsible for ensuring the award winning winemaking team is supplied with grapes of exceptional quality. In managing all grower relations and grape buying throughout the , he is accountable for all logistics of grape intake ensuring all the grapes are picked at optimum ripeness. Stephan, who studied a BSc.Agric in Winemaking and Viticulture before completing his Honours in Viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch, not only spends time in the vineyards, but can be found in the tasting room with his winemaking colleagues and in the cellar involved with special parcels of grapes intended for top-end wines. EDGEBASTON FINLAYSON

The Finlayson family is synonymous with modern era winemaking in the Cape region. Three generations of Finlayson’s have played an important role in the Cape’s modern wine industry. Dr Maurice Finlayson, a pathologist originally from Inverness in Scotland started the family wine business at Hartenberg farm in Stellenbosch. It was here that his son Walter started his career that would take him on to Blaauwklippen where he twice won the award of “South African winemaker of the year”. Walter then started and built up Glen Carlou in Paarl and was joined by his son David in 1994. David qualified as a winemaker at Elsenburg Agricultural college in Stellenbosch as Dux student and then proceeded to travel the world gaining winemaking experience at first in Australia (Peter Lehmann Wines) and then in France at the world renowned Chateau Margaux. www.edgebaston.co.za HAND-CRAFTED

Hand-crafted wines are wines that have had their entire production process done by hand & tradtional methods. Grapes are hand picked & sorted. The vineyard is often nutured by biodynamic processes. FLAGSTONE

Bruce Jack is an interesting guy. There’s a bit of a pioneer spirit about him – he’s prepared to do things a bit differently, as his Flagstone venture shows. He’s also one of those wine industry figures who is known as an ‘opinion former’, because he’s bright, articulate and is prepared to speak out. It was back in 1998 that Bruce Jack, now 46, founded Flagstone as a “virtual winery” with facilities initially located at the Waterfront in Cape Town. He was later to give up ownership (although staying on as winemaker) in order to become consultant on mega export brand Kumala. He has worked in Bordeaux, Sonoma Coast, Napa, McLaren Vale, Barossa, La Rioja, Terra Alta, Jumilla, Rueda, South of France, and all over South Africa. His most recent venture is making wines on the family farm called The Drift Farm near Napier in the Overberg. “It’s special because of the isolation, the unusual soil, the constant wind, the wildlife and endemic fynbos”, he says. www.flagstonewines.com ORGANIC GARDEN

Johan Reyneke began his foray into wine-making in 1998, on his family’s farm not far from the long-established town of Stellenbosch, near Cape Town. Years before this, the farm had begun a move to increase biodiversity, with the planting of indigenous vegetation, in part to encourage the return of local wildlife. Cultivation of vineyards along organic, then biodynamic, lines was a natural inclination. The terroir held true to its promise. The ancient soils are sandy in nature, atop decomposed granite and clay. Biodiversity on the farm has now reached a level that exceeds even that found in the natural environment. Approaches as simple as planting clover to divert the mealy bug from the vines show how a route away from herbicides and pesticides need not be as complicated as some winegrowers imagine. The 40-year-old vines of Reyneke produce grapes for what became in 2004 the first biodynamic winery in South Africa. In 2013 Boschendal was acquired by new owners, led by Sam and Rob Lundie, with the intention of rejuvenating this magnificent property. Over the past two years they have attracted a team of talented people who share their dream of making Boschendal into a top agricultural farm; a farm that produces sought after naturally produced food and great wines; and a farm where the natural environment thrives and local communities prosper. Set in the Drakenstein Valley surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, lush gardens and vines, the original farmstead complex is now a national monument with a rich and intriguing history of more than 300 years. Today, Boschendal is a Cape winelands icon and an acclaimed wine and food destination. Our vineyards and fruit trees have been joined by vegetable gardens and a growing herd of free range, 100% pasture fed Angus cattle reflecting our commitment to serving wholesome farm-to-table food. Guest accommodation is also a recent addition to the farm with luxurious cottage accommodation ranging from the exclusive and historic Rhodes Cottage built by Sir Herbert Baker to the elegantly restored Werf Cottages. Cottage guests enjoy access to the entire farm where they can walk and cycle on trails through mountain fynbos, dine under the stars, have picnics and sundowners in exclusive areas, fly-fish in the dams and swim in pristine mountain water.
