The visit was hosted by Jon Jones, Bristol Brunel Academy Principal, Steve Taylor CEO of the Cabot Learning Federation and Professor Jane Harrington, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost, University of the West of England and Chair of CLF Board Damian and Nick were keen to see how the Prince’s trust projects work with young people in schools as well as visiting a thriving academy working collaboratively as part of a Multi Academy Trust. They visited a Year 10 lesson where students were Equality & Diversity Success completing a STEM activity designing and constructing a self-propelled model car, the lesson was delivered by Rebecca Owen, Associate Assistant Principal and set up by the Prince’s Trust. Following the lesson Damian and Nick asked students about their work with the Prince’s Trust and the other activities they have been involved in. The students also got involved in a question and answer session with Damian about the life of an MP and the role of the Secretary of State for Education. The afternoon ended with a tour of the Academy before Damian was presented with a Cabot Learning Federation Rugby shirt and rugby ball by Year 10 students Derek Paralympian vists City Academy Fulgence and Kai Salandy.

I am very proud of the students and staff whose activities and achievements are within its pages. We have had a great half term which has had a real sense of drive and purpose about what we are working towards together. There has been a really positive feel around the Academy, too. Holyrood exists to serve our community and to ensure that young people of all abilities and backgrounds have the grades, experiences and skills they need to be truly successful. It means a great deal to me that our students are having opportunities to broaden their horizons, experience learning outside of the classroom and experience life outside of their local area. If your son or daughter has not yet become involved in teams, clubs or trips, please do encourage them! These are fantastic places to build self-confidence and meet new people. We are on an exciting improvement journey and I am delighted to announce that two new Senior Leaders will be joining us. Mr Jonathan Black (Deputy Headteacher) will be joining us after Easter and Mr Rob Crocker (Deputy Headteacher) will be joining us in September. Both Mr Black and Mr Crocker are experienced and talented Senior Leaders who will bring new skills and ideas to our Senior Leadership Team.

    02/11/2017 RE: INTRODUCTION TO THE FLYING START CHALLENGE 2017/2018 Dear Parent/Guardian, I am writing to introduce you to the Flying Start Challenge, something that your child has signed up to take part in for the next few months. What is the Flying Start Challenge? The Flying Start Challenge (FSC) is yearly STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) event that aims to inspire and promote engineering to children in years 7 – 9. The aim of the challenge itself is to design and build hand-launched gliders to fly as far as possible. The competition includes a regional fly-off competition, which all schools are invited to take part in. The regional competition consists of a series of a glider fly-off between all participating teams, as well as activities which challenges students’ knowledge and understanding of engineering. Winning schools are then invited to the Grand Final, which in previous years has been held at Fleet Air Arm Museum near Yeovil. Teams taking part in the various engineering activities at the Grand Final can win great prizes, including a cash prize towards funding STEM equipment for the winning school. As part of the competition the teams can win various individual prizes as well as prizes for their school which includes STEM vouchers for £1000, £500 and £250. Companies currently supporting the program include: Airbus, Atkins, BAE Systems, GKN Aerospace, Leonardo Helicopters, MBDA, Rolls-Royce, Triumph and Safran. These companies provide employees to support students taking part in the challenge. This support includes the delivery of teaching material, some glider building supplies, and advice throughout.

    Nailsea School NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2020 | Term 3 A Message from the Head We are looking forward to the next break after what has been a busy and useful term. Year 7 & 8 students have been concentrating on improving their studies and focusing on building a good foundation for their future. There have been opportunities such as the Science Fair and the STEM day where some year 7 students were able to meet and talk to industry professionals. Year 9s have been selecting their options and thinking hard about how they can shape their own future, whilst years 10 & 11 are getting to the business end of planning and building a strong foundation for their revision and exam preparation. Term 3 is very much a behind-the-scenes sort of term, a time for staff and students to nurture themselves, ready to breathe fresh air into the way they work, to take stock ready for Term 4 when spring encourages everyone to flourish. I hope that you enjoy your break and use this time to think about what actions and preparations you can make to get the ‘best in show’ award this Spring. A Message from the Governors This term the Governors were pleased to attend the Year 11 ‘Prep for Success’ evening. We were impressed to see the variety of extra support being provided, including the catch up sessions, and revision resources and advice on how to revise. The new Year 11 tutor groups are also supporting students with creating and planning individual revision plans. Thank you to all the staff for their passion and commitment supporting our Year 11s.

    Written evidence submitted by the Department for Education (DfE) with a contribution from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) (ES00) Summary 1. This submission sets out how Government policy supports the development of engineering skills and benefits the engineering industry. It explains how current educational reforms will ensure that more young people leave school with a more rigorous grounding in mathematics and the sciences, create a more educated society in which pupils are able to excel whatever their background and bring benefits both directly and indirectly to engineering. Reforming the Education system 2. The Government’s educational reforms are designed to secure more rigorous academic achievement and to put in place an assessment system which engineering employers will understand and have confidence in. We are revising the National Curriculum to be slimmer and more challenging and which is comparable with those of the highest-performing countries in the world. It will focus more sharply on the core essential knowledge that matters, and leave room for additional subjects and courses without sacrificing academic rigour in the traditional subjects. We expect the next generation of pupils to leave school with a better command of language, literacy and general knowledge, and a stronger understanding of mathematics and science. 3. In launching the new National Curriculum, we have already reaffirmed the primacy of the core subjects of English, mathematics and science throughout primary and secondary education. We have released new draft primary programmes of study for English, mathematics and science in advance of a formal public consultation later in the year. These set out a more systematic approach which supports better subject progression.
