John Bertrand became our Rear Commodore. Ted Kizanis was Fleet Captain and Graham Bambery was Port Captain. Sharon Gibson volunteered to be Secretary/Treasurer. John Bertrand remained the Rear Commodore from 1997 through 2001 when the BOD convinced him to move up to Vice Commodore to comply with the NYC bylaws. So in 2002 John was the VC and Woodie Cole became our new Rear Commodore. From that point on, the normal advancement, as outlined in the Club’s bylaws, returned to the rules but John continued to spearhead the race starts at the mole assisted by Ken Dorland and Sharon Gibson. John no longer was the handicapper as the BOD reached out to the HYRA and our race boats had to apply to them to get their “real” HYRA handicaps. When John’s health began to deteriorate he still showed up at every race to raise the red start flag while Ken and Sharon managed the clock, the horn, and the finish.
