DSR’s teams are in solid positions to make runs at NHRA world championships and $500,000 bonuses that go along with the titles. Leading the way will be Matt Hagan and the Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger R/T team that have made a miraculous turnaround after not qualifying for the Countdown a year ago and will start this year’s edition as the No. 1 seed. Hagan’s team, the 2011 world champion, suffered through 2012 without winning an event title or No. 1 qualifying position, but after 18 events this year with new crew chief Dickie Venables and rookie assistant Michael Knudsen the team has won four titles and four poles heading to the Countdown.     TOPEKA SWEEP FOR MOPAR The NHRA Kansas Nationals last weekend was one for the history books in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series and one Matt Hagan and crew chief Dickie Venables will not soon forget. After setting the national elapsed time and speed records on Friday night at Heartland Park Topeka with a 3.862- second pass at 335.57 mph, the fastest a Funny Car has ever traveled in 1,000 feet or a quarter-mile, the Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots team led by Venables and assistant Michael Knudsen took the event title on Sunday afternoon to earn an NHRA Wally trophy for the second straight weekend and jump from ninth to fourth in the Mello Yello standings. Under sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s, NHRA fans tuning in live on Fox Sports 1 were treated to a wild pedalfest in Sundays’ final round between Hagan and his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Jack Beckman, who Hagan also beat in last weekend’s final round in the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Hagan pedaled his 10,000- horsepower Dodge Charger R/T at least half a dozen times before crossing the finish line to earn his 20th career event title and first at Heartland Park Topeka. “It was wild,” Hagan said of the final round. “It’s important to put everything in perspective. We set world records for E.T and speed, and then to come back out here to win this race is a tribute to my guys and their hard work. My butt was puckered pretty good on that last run.

Shootout adds to big Texas weekend for Capps; ‘Sarge’ not ready to surrender Top Fuel lead ENNIS, Texas (Sept. 21, 2012) – There are concrete reasons why this weekend’s NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event could be the best ever at the Texas Motorplex outside of Dallas. At least we hope it will be for Don Schumacher Racing, which is living up to its moniker as the “biggest and baddest team” in drag racing. Heading to the ’Plex, the first all- concrete dragstrip, DSR is first in Top Fuel with the U.S. Army’s Tony Schumacher and first in Funny Car with NAPA AUTO PARTS’ Ron Capps in a Dodge Charger R/T after last weekend’s opening round of the Countdown to the Championship. The priority for the top-10 drivers in both nitro categories of the Countdown is going rounds and winning titles. But there will be $100,000 up for grabs among eight Funny Car drivers, including three from DSR. The inaugural Traxxas Nitro Shootout will be Saturday concurrently with qualifying that day and the Shootout champ will earn a $100,000 bonus for his team. He picked up two additional bonus points for his team by making the second quickest pass of Q4. On race day, Force dismissed Alexis DeJoria in the opening round, followed by his teammate Robert Hight in the second round. In the semifinals, he matched up with Courtney Force and got the win, sending him to a tough final round match-up with Ron Capps. Force got the starting line advantage and turned on the win light next to Capps with a 3.948 at 324.59 mph to Capps’ 3.960 at 320.13 mph.
