The O cial Magazine of Rugby League Cares January 2017 elcome to the fi rst edition of One n ll n the ne name for Rugby League Cares’ W ne-look nesletter hich has gone through something of a transformation at the end of hat has been another busy year for the charity As you can see, we have rebranded and changed the format so that our members and supporters can get a clearer understanding of the breadth of work we do throughout the sport. In this edition we welcome a number of new partners who have recently joined the charity to assist our work, particularly the support we provide to former and current players in all levels of the game. All Sport Insurance and Purple Travel have come on board as members of the newly-formed Rugby League Cares Business Club which aims to provide a wide range of services that help players, particularly in areas where the nature of their occupation can put them at a disadvantage. 2016 proved to be a challenging year for the charity as we continued to play an important role in assisting players successfully transitioning from the sport by awarding education and welfare grants. We enjoyed a very successful partnership with Rugby AM and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal on the Ride to Rio challenge; and we secured grants from Curious Minds and Cape UK to support club foundations to deliver some life-affi rming experiences for young people in their communities via a Cultural Welcome Partnership programme. This culminated in which will deliver great outcomes for our Finally, I hope you enjoy this new version some terrifi c dance performances at maor benefi ciaries and which is easy for the public of the newsletter and catching up about all events during the year.

  • Wales Rugby League 2013 Annual Report 2
1 WALES RUGBY LEAGUE 2013 ANNUAL REPORT Period April 2013-March 2014 WELCOME FROM WRL CHAIRMAN Brian Juliff Hello and welcome to our 2013 Annual Review. The cover picture is from the Rugby League World Cup at the Millennium Stadium and highlights the exhilaration and pride of representing your country at the highest level of International Rugby League by a player born, bred and developed through the ‘Wales Rugby League Pathway’. In terms of performance, the North Wales Crusaders led the way with promotion to Championship 1 which was a huge success for Rugby League in Wales and led to some ground breaking community work being done in the region, which in turn will strengthen the foundations for the game to flourish. It was a pleasure to witness the passion of the Crusaders travelling band of supporters when they defeated London Skolars at New River Stadium, White Hart Lane, to secure their right to promotion. The board of directors at the Crusaders enter the new season under no illusions as to the enormity of the task of surviving in Championship 1. Clearly investment in the squad will be necessary to push on and the club will be keen to attract new partners/sponsors to enhance their wonderfully vociferous and very popular group of fans. North Wales Crusaders have also set up a Charitable Foundation in the region which supports the growth of disabled sport in the area and have expanded their community portfolio by launching a new wheelchair rugby league club team. South Wales Scorpions are on a slightly different trajectory, of course, with the focus on the pathway from our South Wales Academy to Senior Rugby League for our emerging Welsh talent and this team will grow steadily stronger over the next few years.

The Welsh have won the last five encounters between the two sides, putting over a century of points on their Celtic rivals in each of their last two clashes. Straight after that game finishes, Wales must take to the court again to face England (3pm) knowing that not only have England won all of their matches against them, but have never lost against a match against a fellow British Isles nation. Wales come into the tournament in good form having won the Celtic Cup back in April, beating Scotland and Ireland and scoring a century of points in each game. England had two tough matches in France in June in a two matches series against their hosts, winning the first 31-25 before losing 50-46. A Welsh cap record could be broken on Saturday. Alan Caron, Wales Wheelchair heritage player #1, could become the country’s record test cap holder if he plays in both games. With 29 appearances before this weekend, he is set to overtake Ian Watson, Jordan James and Rhys Williams, all of whom have made 30 test appearances for the Wales men’s side.
