What is the High-Performance Building Conference? Hosted by CSI Maine, the High-Performance Building Conference gathers architects, contractors, designers, engineers, facility managers, building owners, and anyone other industry professionals with an interest in learning about building high- performance enclosures in New England. The full-day event features five nationally recognized speakers, who will each offer expertise on aspects of high-performance buildings. In addition, more than 25 suppliers will be available to approach with questions on products and services related to high-performance building design and construction.

Why should I attend? You’ll learn about processes and strategies specific to building high-performance buildings for the northeast climate. New England has specific construction and design challenges. You’ll learn to address these challenges from industry experts. You’ll also have the opportunity to network with other building professionals in the region. By asking questions and sharing concerns, you’ll build valuable business relationships and develop solutions to take to take back to your workplace.

Where is it? The conference is located at Holiday Inn by the Bay at 88 Spring Street, Portland. It is near the Cross Insurance Arena.

Will I qualify for Continuing Education Credits? Yes, you may earn credit for each session. Upon check-in on conference day, you will be asked if you wish to receive Continuing Education Credits. If so, you will be credited for six hours of continuing education.

Is WiFi available? Yes, WiFi is available and it is complimentary.

Is breakfast and lunch included? Breakfast, lunch and refreshment breaks are included. In addition, a beer/ wine social follows the sessions at 4:30 p.m. All of this is included in your conference fee.

What is the Construction Specifications Institute?

Why is it hosting this event? Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) is a national body with local chapters across the U.S. Its mission is to advance building information management and education of project teams to improve facility performance. The non-profit organization supports and elevates professionalism within the construction industry through education, certification, information, fellowship and membership involvement. One of its key objectives is to provide quality programs and seminars that offer Continuing Education Credits. CSI Maine offers several talks and sessions throughout the year. This conference is an extension of its programming.

Do I have to be a CSI member to attend? No, we welcome anyone interested in design and construction to attend. Peter Craig, CSI, Concrete Floor Specialist, Silpro | Greene, ME Topic: Moisture Mitigation in Concrete Floor Slabs

Peter has more than 40 years of experience as a materials and concrete repair specialist. He provides consulting and quality assurance services for specialized aspects of concrete construction, maintenance, repair and protection. Over the years, Peter has been an integral member of several industry associations and task groups. As member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), he was co-chair of a special team that, over six years, studied and reported on moisture-related floor and vapor retarder issues. Peter also served as national president of the International Concrete Repair Institute and member of the ACI-sanctioned Maine Concrete Technicians Certification Board. He currently contributes to the American Society for Testing & Materials as member of the ASTM Task Group E06.21.08 Standards. The long-time CSI member has also been an instructor for the NNECPA-sponsored ACI Flatwork Certification Program. Brian Stroik, Manager, Building Envelope Solution Team, Tremco Sealants & Waterproofing | Appleton, WI Topic: Mockups

Brian is chair of National Building Enclosure Council and second vice-chair of the Air Barrier Association of America. He is also a union- trained carpenter. As manager for Tremco’s Building Envelope Solutions Team, Brian’s primary responsibility is the development of Tremco’s Construction Managers (CM) program. He also assists in system reviews, best construction practices, building science education, and supports CMs in the building enclosure commissioning process. In the last 13 years, Brian has specifically focused on building enclosures, gaining a better understanding of building science and implementing LEAN construction practices in the field. Brian regularly shares his expertise on building enclosure systems, focusing on the contractor’s perspective of construction, and how “real life” application of systems go (and sometimes don’t go) together. He stresses the importance of first-run (mockup) studies, field testing of the building enclosure, and building enclosure commissioning.

Ken Roko, AIA, Building Enclosure Consultant and Principal, The Facade Group | Portland, OR Topic: Air Vapor Barriers

Ken is a building enclosure consultant and principal with more than 14 years of experience. He has a diverse background, encompassing both architecture and structural engineering. His project experience is equally diverse -- ranging from commercial and residential towers to institutional and public buildings. As The Facade Group’s in-house roofing, waterproofing and air barrier expert and head of the hygrothermal analysis team, he is responsible for project coordination, analysis, detailing, production and construction services, and existing building performance reporting. With a degree in architecture from NY Institute of Technology and an architectural engineering degree from Penn State University, Ken has a foundation in both the practical and theoretical aspects of building enclosure and structural systems. He is a member of AIA and NRCA, and a founding member of the Portland Building Enclosure Council. Ken is also a member of the Air Barrier Association of America where he serves on both the Terminations and Flashings Committee and the Air Leakage Testing Committee. Richard is nationally recognized for his broad expertise on building enclosures. He conducts peer reviews of architectural designs in the early design stages as well as during the construction document preparation process. He also assists in reviewing submittals, test mockups and installations of building enclosures. In addition to his role as senior architect for Thompson & Lichtner Company, Richard is the editor of the revisions to the Whole Building Design Guide, Building Enclosure Design Guide, a Building Enclosure Council project. He also consults in private practice to architects in the area. Richard is founder and current co-chair of the Boston Society of Architects’ Building Enclosure Council as well as a member of the National Institute of Building Sciences Building Enclosure and Thermal Environment Council Board of Directors.

Joseph Lstiburek, Ph.D., P. Eng., ASHRAE Fellow, Founding principal of Building Science Corporation | Boston, MA Topic: Roofing

Joseph Lstiburek is an internationally known authority on moisture- related building problems and indoor air quality. He has been featured on such television programs as PBS NOVA (“Can buildings make you sick?”) and is the author of numerous books and technical papers on building science, indoor air quality and durability. The adjunct professor of Building Science at the has more than 30 years of experience in design, construction, investigation, and building science research. His work ranges widely, from providing expert witness testimony to overseeing research and development projects, to writing for the ASHRAE Journal and buildingscience.com. Dr. Lstiburek co-founded the Building Science Corporation in 1990. He also worked on the Canada-wide Super Energy Efficient Housing R-2000 program. Dr. Lstiburek’s commitment to advancing the building industry has had a lasting impact on building codes and practices throughout the world, particularly in the areas of air barriers, vapor barriers, and vented and unvented roof assemblies. For example, his work with industry partners through the Department of Energy’s Building America program led to significant research into the wetting and drying of walls and ultimately to a major code change relaxing the requirement for vapor barriers in the International Residential Code.
