Saturday 24 June to Saturday 15 July www.hillingdon.gov.uk/arts Introduction The borough of Hillingdon is rich in artistic talent, with a multitude of societies providing residents with experiences and opportunities in choral, dance, drama, musical, visual arts, poetry and writing, needlework, floristry and more. Through this festival, Hillingdon Council, working in partnership with Hillingdon Arts Association (HAA), provides a chance for residents to share their very varied talents and hard work with the wider community, and it encourages many more people to discover the power and potential of community art projects. Arts In Action promotes what Hillingdon’s artistic residents have to offer and hopes to encourage more residents – of all ages and abilities – to join in with this fortnight of local artistry. Find out about membership at www.hillingdonarts.org.uk 2 Northwood Community Arts presents A Sense of Place: A New Event in A New Venue Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays, 10am to 4pm, Thursdays, 10am to 1pm, and Saturdays, 10am to 3pm at St John’s United Reformed Church Local artists enhance the beauty of St John’s United Reformed Church with their works depicting ‘A Sense of Place’. One hundred years after being a VAD hospital, the sanctuary continues to provide a communal space for quiet contemplation and upliftment. Cost: Free No booking required Hillingdon Artists presents Art in the Park Saturday 24 June, 1.30pm to 4.30pm at Fassnidge Park Get creative and have your work displayed around the bandstand. Some materials provided. The Stardust Big Band will play in the bandstand from 2pm to 4pm and the Rusty Bike Café will be open for refreshments. Cost: Free No booking required Uxbridge Centre and UB8Create present Community Roots: Art in Action Saturday 24 June, 1pm to 7pm, and Sunday 25 June, 11.30am to 4pm, at Uxbridge Community Centre This exhibition traces people’s artistic paths from their roots in the local community. It also celebrates the work of creative people who have settled here and showcases the potential artists of the future. Cost: Free No booking required 3 Uxbridge Centre and UB8Create present Children’s Coil Pot Workshops Saturday 24 June, 3pm and 4.30pm at Uxbridge Community Centre Open to 5 to 16 year olds, this workshop teaches how to roll, coil and build pots using an ancient method of hand building. All materials are provided but it will be messy, so bring an apron or old top to wear. Please bring a bag to transport your pot home in. Spaces limited. The London Borough of Hillingdon authorises the stopping up of an area of the highway described in the Schedule to the Order and shown hatched blue on the attached Plan, in order to enable development to be carried out in accordance with the planning permission granted under Part III of the Act by the London Borough of Hillingdon on 27 April 2020 under application reference 75127/APP/2019/3221. 2. Where immediately before the date of this Order there is any apparatus of statutory undertakers under, in, on, over, along or across any highway authorised to be stopped up pursuant to this Order then, subject to section 261(4) of the Act those undertakers shall have the same rights as respects that apparatus after that highway is stopped up as they had immediately beforehand. 3.     Ruislip, Northwood & Eastcote Local History Society Everyday Life on the Manor of Ruislip c. 1200-1500: Workshop on Manorial Records Led by Dr Virginia Bainbridge: Friday 11 May: 2.30-4.30 pm: The Stables, Eastcote House Gardens 2.30-3.00 – Life on Ruislip Manor for the medieval tenants of the Abbey of Bec: Powerpoint introduction to the manorial system and using its records as sources for local history 1. Origins of the Manorial System The origin of the manorial system stretches back into the era long before written records. The earliest documents recording land ownership are records of royal administration: Anglo-Saxon charters recording grants of land, Domesday Book written in 1086 recording changes in ownership and property values after the Norman Conquest, and the Pipe Rolls written by the scribes of the Exchequer from 1130 recording taxation collected by the sheriff (shire-reeve) of each county. 2. What is a Manor – Lords and Peasants – The ‘Feudal Pyramid’ From the time of the Norman Conquest, the legal fiction that the king owned all the land and granted it to his vassals governed the pattern of landholding. The great lords, the barons, abbots and bishops, held great estates from the king composed of many manors. Lesser lords, knights and gentry, held one or more manors, either directly from the king or from his barons and churchmen. By the late 12th century a market in parcels of freehold land and even whole estates had developed. Knightly families paid scribes to write deeds recording their exchange of property rights, both leases and sales.
